The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on
Thursday said graduates of polytechnics and colleges of technology in the
country should use their training and skills to create jobs and become
employers of labour rather than job seekers.
The governor spoke during the 26th convocation of
the Lagos State Polytechnic in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Ambode, who was represented by the Deputy
Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, noted that the economic climate of the country required
that young entrepreneurs be determined to create wealth and employment
opportunities.
“On our part, we will continue to move education
from the norm of certificate acquisition to the level of knowledge development
through technology and skills acquisition.
“No society can develop without good investment
in the education of its citizens, or providing an enabling environment for
ideas to thrive.
“You are to create employment opportunities where
none exists and drive investment and economic empowerment for many others,” the
governor added.
In his address, the polytechnic Rector, Mr.
Samuel Sogunro, said, “By becoming job creators, you (graduates) will be
playing your part in stemming down the level of hopelessness among young
graduates who seek the non-readily available white collar jobs.”
Sogunro named the overall best graduating student
as Omotoyosi Fatogun, with Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA) of 3.81 in
the School of Pure and Applied Sciences, Department of Science Laboratory
Technology.
The Chairman, Governing Council of the
polytechnic, Prof. Tajudeen Gbadamosi, pledged to partner the government in
addressing many of the challenges that affected the development of the state.
