The Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC) has criticised the Federal Government over an alleged treatment of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Tonight, Spokesman for the R-APC, Kassim Afegbua, regretted Saraki’s travails since his trial began at the Code of Conduct Tribunal that lasted for three years.

“Bukola Saraki, the Senate President is a strong political player. And he was part and parcel of those who ensured that this government came on stream in 2015,” he said on Sunday night.

“He was abandoned in the cold, he was criminalized, he was disgraced, he was ridiculed. In fact, they called him all manners of names. As soon as he got the verdict of the Supreme Court saying that his trial was no substance, he suddenly became a bride.”

Afegbua’s comments two weeks after the Supreme Court discharged him of the remaining three charges against him in the case of false declaration of assets.

Senator Saraki had filed an appeal at the apex court to challenge the ruling of the Court of Appeal which asked the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to try him on three of the 18 counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

But Afegbua criticised some people in the ruling party for being silent during Saraki’s travails only to reconcile him back into the party.

He added, “All the present people who are going to meet him were all sitting down maintaining some conspiratorial silence at that period. They were waiting for the sledgehammer to fall on him.”

According to Afegbua, the ruling party has failed Nigerians in addressing killings in parts of the country and unemployment.

This is because the party swept to power in 2015 promising to fix the economy, address the insecurity challenges and provide jobs for the unemployed.

Top secret documents released to U.S. news organisations at the weekend  revealed that the  Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI)  believed that a former Trump campaign advisor, Carter Page had ties to Russia as it sought to influence the 2016 US presidential election.
The October, 2016 application to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court named Carter Page, a former foreign policy advisor to the campaign of Donald Trump, according to the documents which The New York Times published.
The newspaper, along with USA Today and others, filed Freedom of Information Act lawsuits to obtain the material, which the Justice Department released but with many details redacted.
“The FBI believes Page has been the subject of targeted recruitment by the Russian government,” the initial FBI application says before it is blacked out and continues: “undermine and influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election in violation of US criminal law.”
Release of the documents comes just over one week after Special Counsel Robert Mueller, probing possible collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia, indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers, accusing them of hacking Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton’s campaign to steal documents, which were then publicly released.
The surveillance of Page became in February the subject of intense rivalry between Republican and Democratic lawmakers.
The former, from Trump’s party, released a memo claiming that Democratic-funded research prompted the FBI to spy on Page.
Trump defied his own FBI director and the Justice Department to declassify the four-page Republican document, which was based on the much larger secret court application record which has now been released.
The White House initially blocked release of a counter-memo from the Democrats, which argued the surveillance warrant request “was based on compelling evidence and probable cause.”
In the documents released Saturday, the FBI cited a source which, it said, had a history of providing reliable information regardless of the source’s reasons for conducting research into Trump’s ties to Russia.
Trump is not named in the document but identified only as “Candidate #1.”
A judge approved the initial wiretapping application, which was renewed three times by other judges, The New York Times said.
The FBI, in its initial application the month before Trump won the election, said it “believes that the Russian Government’s efforts are being coordinated with Page and perhaps other individuals associated with Candidate #1’s campaign.”
It added that “Page has established relationships with Russian Government officials, including Russian intelligence officers.”
Page has not been charged. On Twitter Saturday he said the documents reflect “shocking” civil rights abuses and “complete ignorance” regarding Russia.

Suffering from corruption stigma placed on it, the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to change its name, a rebranding measure ahead of 2019 general election.
ThisDay reported that the party had suffered a string of losses in the last four governorship elections – Edo, Ondo, Anambra and Ekiti.
The newspaper reported that the decision of the party for a change of name was taken on Saturday night.
The party noted that the move was pre-emptive to prevent the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from tagging it as corrupt.
PDP, which planned to announce the decision to change its name, had also pencilled down Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu as the one to head a committee that would walk the party through the procedure.
Many of the party’s stalwarts have been worried by how the ruling APC had successfully branded the party as corrupt in the eyes of Nigerians and admitted that, a rebranding was imperative to mount a successful challenge in 2019.
PDP had become damaged goods that must be changed to give the party a fresh start.
The decision by the PDP to change its name might have stemmed from last Thursday’s meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Though, details of their discussion were not made public, many in PDP believed that with such sessions, the chances of bringing Saraki back to the PDP could be hampered.
The opposition party had long mooted the idea of name change, but had slowed down on the decision because a majority of its members were not disposed to it, and those who wanted it could not convince the others.
Besides, it was thought that even though the party had switched positions and had become an opposition party, PDP was still the only party with membership in the remotest parts of the country, and the name resonated with a majority of its members and admirers, particularly among the teeming illiterate populations.

A gunman took hostages inside a supermarket in the US city of Los Angeles on Saturday and shot one woman dead before handcuffing himself and surrendering, police said.

The drama began at another location when “a male suspect became involved in a family dispute which resulted in him shooting his grandmother and a female,” Sergeant Barry Montgomery told journalists.

“That suspect fled the location in his grandmother’s vehicle, taking that female victim with him,” and eventually entered a Trader Joe’s supermarket, he said.

While police chased the suspect he “fired on officers multiple times” before an “additional gun battle” outside the Trader Joe’s, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore told reporters.

During the shootout, the suspect was wounded in the arm, Mayor Eric Garcetti said, adding that one woman was shot in the store and later declared dead at the scene.

“I regret to inform you that there is one fatality that occurred inside, of a woman,” Garcetti said, without identifying the victim.

Inside the store the suspect took “numerous victims, of citizens as well as store employees, hostage,” Moore said.

Officers rescued some workers and customers, while the hostage-taker released some himself.

About three hours after the ordeal began, negotiations led to the man “handcuffing himself and coming outside and surrendering to SWAT officers,” the police chief said.

The incident injected chaos — and scores of police and fire vehicles — into the busy commercial area of shops and apartment buildings.

Don Kohles was standing outside the store when the suspect’s car slammed into a pole.

Just then he heard two shots. He ran into the exit door of the Trader Joe’s, looked back at the street and saw two police officers shooting at a man, he said.

“The bullets were flying everywhere — through the front of the store and across the parking lot,” Kohles told the Los Angeles Times.

The gunfire shattered the glass doors, Kohles said, and the gunman ran inside and “down the middle aisle.”

US President Donald Trump had earlier tweeted that he was “watching Los Angeles possible hostage situation very closely.”

Devin Field, a man who said he was walking into the store when the incident unfolded, described his experience in a series of tweets.

“I was walking in when a car… running from the police crashed into street lamp in front of the entrance. Gunman got out and started shooting at the cops. I hid behind a retaining wall with three cops until they had me crawl out,” wrote Field, whose Twitter account identifies him as a writer for the Jimmy Kimmel Live TV show.

“Gunman walked in shooting. He went into the back and took hostages. Employees snuck out through back emergency exits. Employee says blood was all over the floor, unclear from where,” he wrote.
