The Kaduna State Police Command on Sunday confirmed the release of Assistant Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adeniyi and his driver, who were abducted on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the police chief and driver were abducted on the Funtua-Birnin Gwari Road.

Adeniyi is the ACP in charge of Police Criminal Investigation Department in Zamfara State and was on his way home to Edo State when they were abducted.

The Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Mukhtar Aliyu, told NAN that the two regained their freedom on Saturday at about 11pm.

According to Aliyu, the abductors released the two following intense pressure by the police anti kidnapping unit, aerial surveillance and activities of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team.

“The pressure made the abductors to tactically release the victims; so far no arrest was made, but we are putting every effort to trail the criminals,” he said.

Sources had earlier informed NAN that the abductors had demanded for N50 million as ransom before releasing the ACP, but the command spokesman denied any knowledge of that.

Aliyu urged “the good citizens of Kaduna State to always give security operatives useful information to stem criminal activities and protect lives and property”.

Bovi And Basketmouth

The last edition of Glo Laffta Fest, held in Port Harcourt last Sunday was one filled with so much laughter, fun and a message to take home from the duo humour merchants of Basketmouth and Bovi.

While delivering their brands of side-splitting jokes, Basketmouth, and Bovi Ugboma used the occasion to counsel against domestic violence. They both cautioned men to desist from turning their wives into punching bags.

Basketmouth described wife-battering as evil, adding that any man who beats his wife is not decent. He called on men to treat their women with respect as equal partners and mothers of their children.

Similarly, Bovi condemned domestic violence in its entirety, arguing that it had no place in modern society. The comedian added that women are not meant to be maltreated, but cherished and treated like the queens they are.

Bovi later got the audience to sing him a birthday song even though his birthday was actually the next day. He said he wanted to take the recording of the large audience singing the song so he could boast that he assembled the massive audience for his birthday.

The crowd duly obliged him and some of his colleagues, led by Godwin Komone (Gordons), came on stage to join in singing the song.

Another comedian, Dan D’Humorous, whose birthday was on that Sunday also got a birthday treat at the event.

The event was the second Laffta Fest show to be held in Port Harcourt this year.

But unlike the April edition which was held at the Aztec Arcum Event Centre on Stadium Road, last Sunday’s show was held at the Hub Event Centre for the enjoyment of Glo subscribers in the Trans Amadi area of the city.

TwoCanTok, whose real name is Kingsley Kalu, opened the comedy night in spectacular fashion with jokes about the differences between the rich and the poor in society.

Olufemi Fagade, popularly known as Omo Baba, was next in line and he entertained the audience with very funny jokes, including a jocular comparison of songs by old artistes and new ones.

Benneth Daniel (Acapella), who performed next, sustained the tempo with his trademark jokes which were well received by the audience.

Ghanaian beauty, Juliet Ibrahim, and Nollywood actress, Uche Jombo, were the show anchors, while Kanayo O. Kanayo, Patience Ozokwor and Richard Mofe-Damijo added further excitement with their attendance as celebrity guests.

The next edition of the show will be held in Onitsha, Anambra State, next Sunday. The show will thereafter move to Makurdi, Benue State, and Ajah in Lagos.

Former Gov. Otunba Gbenga Daniel

Nigerians have been urged to build a nation of our collective dream where freedom, peace and unity reign.

The immediate past Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, stated this in his message to Nigerians on the occasion of the nation’s 57th Independence Day celebration.

According to the former governor, peaceful co-existence is key to a nation’s prosperity as nothing functions in an unstable democracy.

Thanking God for preserving the country through the trying periods experienced in recent past, Daniel said Nigeria is destined for greatness and so “we have every reason to celebrate considering our inbuilt capacity to surmount challenges”.

While appealing to the rich to invest more in the local economy as one of the ways to tackle the recession syndrome headlong, he also urged government at various levels to provide conducive environment for industries and businesses to operate.

By so doing, the acute problems of unemployment, insecurity, unrest and poverty ravaging the land will reduce as more jobs will be created for the citizenry, he stressed.

The former Governor, who is seeking to become the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, also urged Nigerians to be committed to the promotion of democracy and good governance by choosing the right leaders to make the country prosper in every sector of nationhood.

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State has described as strange and embarrassing the silence of the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, over what it termed the unlawful arrest of officials of the State Government by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The party admonished Adeyeye to purge himself of anger over his failure to secure Governor Ayodele Fayose’s support for his governorship ambition and do his job.

The Ekiti State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Jackson Adebayo, said these in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Saturday.

Adebayo expressed the party’s disappointment over Adeyeye’s attitude towards the performance of his main duty of defending the PDP and its members.

He said he should resign and face his governorship ambition “because as it is, the ambition to be governor of Ekiti State is already affecting the performance of his duties to the PDP and its entire members”.

The PDP in Ekiti State said: “If it were to be when PDP was in power, National Publicity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won’t waste one minute before condemning such disrespect for a subsisting order of the court by the EFCC.

“But here we are as the opposition party, the PDP spokesperson only deemed it necessary to react promptly to Governor Fayose’s declaration for president, and not the unlawful arrest of officials of the government of his own State.

“If Adeyeye, whose duty is to defend our party and its members, cannot speak against the unlawful arrest of officials of the PDP government of his home state, just because the governor did not support his gubernatorial ambition, which PDP controlled state will he now defend?

“Should we then conclude that Adeyeye has constituted himself to an opposition against the PDP government of Ekiti State, even more than the APC, such that he lost his voice when members of his own party were unlawfully arrested by the EFCC and dumped in detention since Thursday?

“Is he happy that officials of Ekiti State government are being harassed by the EFCC? Will Adeyeye be silent as he is now if Governor Fayose had adopted him instead of his deputy, Prof Kolapo Olusola?

Should a party spokesperson be so obsessed with his governorship ambition to such an extent that he will no longer be alive to his responsibilities?

“Adeyeye must have to choose between being the PDP National Publicity Secretary, whose duty is to defend the party and his members and being a governorship aspirant.”
