A tiger believed to have killed as many as 13 people in India has been hunted down and shot.
Known as T1 but nicknamed Avni, the tigress has dragged away several villagers by the neck and with her cubs, devoured large parts of them, The New York Times reported.
Locals in the Pandharkawada area were terrified and earlier efforts to capture the six-year-old, 170 kilogram tiger – including calling in five elephants in a bid to corral it – had failed.
Broadcaster NDTV said Avni was killed after a huge operation involving sniffer dogs, trip cameras, almost 200 people and even a hang glider.

A Chinese entomologist has broken a new Guinness World Record after discovering the world’s biggest mosquito.
This week, Zhao Li, with the Insect Museum of West China in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan, received certification from the Guinness World Records, which confirmed a giant mosquito he discovered in June to be the world’s biggest.
Previously, the record holder was a mosquito discovered by British zoologist Mark Carwardine. Carwardine describes in his 2008 book “Animal Records” that the distance between the mosquito’s foreleg and hind leg could reach 23 cm.
But Zhao’s discovery of the mosquito, known as Holorusia mikado, has nabbed the top spot.
The specimen of the mosquito, kept in Zhao’s museum, has a wingspan of 11.15 cm, while the distance between its foreleg and hind leg is 25.8 cm.
Holorusia mikado, the biggest kind of mosquito, was originally discovered in Japan. Zhao said that such giant mosquitos barely suck on blood. Instead, they feed on honey flower.
“Actually, in English, it is not called a mosquito,” Zhao said. “It is called a crane fly. Meanwhile, people in Germany call it a ‘long-legged father’.”
The Insect Museum of West China keeps more than 700,000 items, including insect specimens, fossils and cultural relics.

The researchers holding the bricks made from urine

South African researchers say they have made bricks using human urine in a natural process involving colonies of bacteria, which could one day help reduce global warming emissions by finding a productive use for the ultimate waste product.
Although make from urine, the bricks do not have any foul smell.
The grey bricks are produced in a lab over eight days using urine, calcium, sand and bacteria. Fertilizers are also produced during the processes.
The bricks are made using urea — a chemical found naturally in urine and also synthesized around the world to make fertilizer. The process of growing bricks from urea has been tested in the United States with synthetic solutions, but the new brick uses real human urine for the first time, the researchers said.
“We literally pee this away every day and flush it through the sewer networks,” said Dyllon Randall, a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town’s civil engineering department who is part of the team that developed the brick. “Why not recover this instead and make multiple products?”
One obstacle preventing mass production: the bricks use huge amounts of pee. To make a single brick requires about 20 liters of urine – a couple of weeks’ worth of wee for a typical adult.
“So, I get it from the boys bathroom opposite the laboratory. I put a little sign up and all the university boys contribute to my research,” said Suzanne Lambert, who proved the concept for the research by making the first brick.
“I definitely see commercialization in the next decade or two, but there is still a lot of lab work to be done,” she said.

Pop Star Shakira asked her home country Colombia on Friday to pump more money into education to achieve peace and equality among citizens.
“When some children don’t receive the same education as those who live in better conditions we can’t talk about a country in peace, we can’t talk about a country with equality, because education is what equalises us,” Shakira told journalists.
She spoke during a visit to close her El Dorado tour and break ground at two schools to be built by her charitable foundation.
The singer, whose full name is Shakira Mebarak, attended two ceremonies in Cartagena and her hometown of Barranquilla at the sites of the future schools, signing her autograph in the cement cornerstones.
She said that support for education should not just come from celebrities.
The 41-year-old singer founded her Pies Descalzos charity in 1997, when she was just 18. It takes its name from her third album – her first international success – and translates to “bare feet.”
The foundation already has four schools in Cartagena, Barranquilla, Quibdo and Soacha.
It will spend some $4.6 million on the new Cartagena school, in the Villa de Aranjuez neighbourhood, and another $4.3 million on the project in Barranquilla’s Nuevo Bosque, in company with several private donors.
The schools will serve areas with over-subscribed educational facilities, said the pop star.
Colombia’s previous government signed a peace deal in 2016 with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels to end more than five decades of war. Another guerrilla group, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and myriad crime gangs remain active.
The new right-wing government of President Ivan Duque, who took office in August, has called off peace talks with the ELN until the group frees all its hostages.
Shakira’s 54-show El Dorado tour, which began in Hamburg in June, will come to an end on Saturday in Bogota, Colombia’s capital.
The tour had been set to begin in November last year, but was postponed to allow the singer to heal a hemorrhage on her right vocal cord.
The five-time Grammy Award winner, whose 2001 song “Whenever, Wherever” was a Spanish-to-English crossover hit, is one of Colombia’s biggest musical exports, alongside singers Juanes and Maluma.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, says conciliation on the national minimum wage will continue on Sunday despite the court injunction restraining organised labour from embarking on strike.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Industrial Court had on Friday ordered the organised labour not to go ahead with the nationwide strike scheduled for Nov. 6
Justice Sanusi Kado gave the order in a ruling on an ex parte application moved on behalf of the Federal Government by the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr Dayo Apata.
Recall that organised labour had threatened to commence an indefinite strike on Nov. 6 to press for a new minimum wage of N30, 000 for workers.
The minister in the statement, however, insists that the conciliation meeting involving organised Labour, the organised private sector and government scheduled for Sunday remain unchanged.
“The conciliation meeting involving the Organised Labour, the Organised Private Sector and Government scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by 6 p.m. is still on course and will hold,’’ he said.
Ngige said that this will be followed by another meeting of the National Tripartite Minimum Wage Committee meeting  on Monday, Nov. 5 at the same venue.
The minister appealed to all tripartite members to attend the meetings in the interest of the nation and finding a solution to the minimum wage impasse.
