Mr Curtis Adigba

Political analyst and lawyer, Mr Curtis Adigba, has said that the actions of the National Assembly towards the executive only prove that it wants the President to stop fighting corruption.

He said this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while analyzing the resolutions of the lawmakers on Tuesday.

The National Assembly at an emergency joint session held earlier had reaffirmed its vote of no confidence on the Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris, and warned the President over the “systematic harassment and humiliation by the Executive of perceived political opponents”.

Furthermore, it vowed to go tougher in checking the powers of the President and threatened to exercise its constitutional powers if nothing is done to address the resolutions – a development which Mr Adigba believes is merely an attempt to clog the wheels of the anti-graft war.

“I see several demands, but I see just one key demand (which is) Mr President, stop fighting corruption. They said he should make the trial for corruption more equitable,” he stated.

Also according to the lawyer, the actions of the lawmakers are an indication that “the anti-corruption war will remain divisive” because he believes the nation is yet to define what it corruption truly is.

“What is corruption, depends on the side of the political divide that you belong to,” he added.

Furthermore, he asserted that the development is in connection to the friction that already exists between the police and the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

Specifically, he believes it was because the police had recently invited the Senate President in connection with a bank robbery that took place in Offa, Kwara State.

“The tipping point for this action that they are calling harassment is just because the Police invited the Senate President”.

Mr Adigba, however, maintained that the threats by NASS to evoke its powers are not a new development as it has always exercised those powers in the areas of refusing to confirm presidential nominees for various positions, among other issues.

“The National Assembly has always been evoking their constitutional powers. They’ve invoked that power to delay the budget, they have invoked that power to refuse the confirmation of nominees for various positions by the President, the only power left is to impeach the president but that’s not very easy.

“It’s a political process much more than a legal process and there are political thresholds that you must attain,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria is safe and secure for tourism and investment, which will improve the economy.

The President made this declaration on Tuesday in Abuja, when he received the Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), Mr Zurab Pololikashvili, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The President said it would have been inconceivable to host an international tourism conference in Abuja four years ago, because of security concerns.

‘‘I am pleased that the country is now sufficiently safe and secure, and the message should go out to the world for all tourists and business travellers. The first thing tourists look out for is security and I am happy we have it now.

‘‘Minister Lai Mohammed has been trying to convince the world that Nigeria is safe and has great potentials for tourism and investment. I am glad that you and your team have come here to see things for yourself,’’ the President told the UN tourism chief, who is in Abuja for the 61st UNWTO Commission for Africa (CAF) conference.

Highlighting the nexus between tourism and sustainable development, the President said Nigeria would not be left behind in ensuring that communities and businesses benefit from tourism development.

In his remarks, Pololikashvili commended Nigeria for the successful hosting of the conference which brings together African Ministers of Tourism, principal executives of the global tourism body and other stakeholders in the tourism sector.

The UN tourism chief told the President Nigeria had huge potential to develop the tourism sector considering its large economy.

‘‘We can do it in Nigeria, we can create, convert Nigeria to the main tourist destination in Africa. There is a huge potential here. Culture, nature, food you have everything here.

‘‘You are investing in agriculture, improving seamless travel through visa-on-arrival programme, reforming the economy and doing so much on security. Nigeria is safe,’’ Pololikashvili said.

Also speaking, the Information and Culture Minister said 166 delegates, including 26 tourism ministers from Africa are attending the UN tourism conference, holding from June 4 to June 6 in Abuja.

The Minister of Defense, Mansur Dan-Ali, has called for the suspension of the implementation of the anti-grazing law.

He disclosed this on Tuesday after a security meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

According to the minister, “There is a need for the Nigeria police and Department of State Services to prosecute all the suspects arrested in the affected states while negotiating safe routes for the herders.

The meeting comes after series of calls by the governors of Benue, Taraba, Rivers and Ekiti calling for an end to the anti-open grazing law.

The Federal Government and other security agencies had been accused of neglecting and poorly handling the killings of innocent Nigerians in the troubled states.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, and Speaker House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, during a joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, June 5, 2018.

The National Assembly has reaffirmed its resolution of vote of no confidence on Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris.

This was one of the resolutions of the lawmakers after an emergency joint session which was held behind closed doors on Tuesday.

The resolutions were read by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

“We also hereby reaffirm our earlier resolution on the vote of no confidence on the Inspector General of Police, who does nothing but preside over innocent Nigerians with an outright disregard for the constitutional authority of both the executive and the legislature,” Saraki said.

The joint session also agreed that President Muhammadu Buhari must be held accountable for the actions of his appointees and sanction erring appointees.

“The President must be held accountable for the actions of his appointees and must be ready to sanction those that carry out any act which will ridicule or endanger our country and democracy.”

The Senate had earlier in May 2018 declared the IGP as an ‘enemy of democracy’ and that he is unfit to hold a public office. The announcement was made after the police boss refused to appear in person before the lawmakers after he was summoned earlier on two different occasions.

The IGP was summoned over the spate of killings in some parts of the country.

Both chambers, during the joint session, however, gave marching orders to security agencies to protect Nigerians and curtail incessant killings by gunmen.

“The Security Agencies must be given marching orders to curtail the sustained killings of Nigerians across the country and protect life and properties of Nigerians as this is the primary duty of any responsible Government.” LR News

Former Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala

Oyo State High Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan, has refused the application by an ex-governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, and the Chief Executive Officer of Pentagon Consults, Olufemi Babalola, for a stay of proceedings pending the outcome of an appeal at the Supreme Court.

The former Oyo State governor, Alao-Akala, alongside a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hosea Agboola and a contractor and Babalola are standing trial for offences bordering on alleged criminal conspiracy and fraudulent practices to the tune of N11.5 billion.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement on Monday said they were earlier arraigned on an 11-count charge by the anti-graft agency.

After the arraignment, their trial was stalled following their applications to stay further proceedings/trial pending the determination of their appeals at the Supreme Court by counsel to the first and third defendants, A.O. Afolabi (SAN) and A. Ogunwole (SAN).

Their motions were however opposed by the prosecuting counsel, Ben Ubi who urged the court to refuse the applications and order for accelerated hearing of the case in accordance with the intendment of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Oyo State, 2016 and Section 19(2)(b) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(Establishment) Act, 2004.

In his ruling, on Monday, Justice M. L. Owolabi said: “stay of proceedings will do more damage to the case which has been pending since 2011 and ordered the prosecution to assemble all its witnesses at the next date.”

The case was then adjourned to June 29 and July 3, 2018, for trial.

Singapore’s gold coin to mark Trump-Kim summit

The Singapore Mint on Tuesday unveiled three types of commemorative coins  ahead of the June 12 meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and the top leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Jong Un.
Unveiling the three commemorative gold, silver and base-metal pieces, the company said it is excited to document the history through minted coins and medallions.
The medallions will commemorate the meeting as a “momentous step to world peace” and mark Singapore as “an economic and security gateway between the East and the West,” according to a statement published on the company’s website.
One side of the coin features a handshake between the two leaders with the respective flags of both countries as the background, while the reverse side shows a dove with the slogan “World Peace” emblazoned above it.
Only a few thousand pieces of Singapore’s commemorative coins have been made and were open for pre-order from the mint on Tuesday.
