Pirates have kidnapped 10 sailors from a merchant ship off the coast of southern Nigeria in the latest attack in the restive region, the International Maritime Bureau said on Thursday.

“A bulk carrier underway was attacked and boarded by six pirates from a small boat. Ten crew members were reported missing. The remaining crew onboard sailed the vessel to a safe port,” the IMB said in a statement.

The kidnapping happened around 32 nautical miles south of Brass last week in the volatile Niger Delta, a growing piracy hotspot in West Africa, it said.

The number of reported attacks off the Niger Delta region has been increasing in recent weeks, according to the Sea Guardian consultancy, with more than 15 known attacks.

56 mariners, excluding the latest casualties, have been kidnapped in the area this year, the consultancy said.

That number includes six crew members from a German-owned container ship who were abducted near the oil hub of Port Harcourt in October.

The IMB has recorded more than 100 piracy incidents in international waters this year, including shootings, attempted kidnappings and hijackings of ships.

It described in a recent report that the Gulf of Guinea remained a “hot spot for attacks”, despite a fall in the number of incidents elsewhere in the world.

The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted by a decisive vote of 128 to nine, with 35 abstentions, a motion rejecting the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

President Donald Trump had warned ahead of the vote in the 193-nation assembly that “we’re watching” and threatened reprisals against countries backing the measure, which reaffirms that the status of Jerusalem must be resolved through negotiations.

Seven countries — Guatemala, Honduras, Togo, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and the Marshall Islands — joined Israel and the United States in opposing the measure.

Among the 35 countries that abstained were Argentina, Australia, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Mexico, the Philippines, Romania and Rwanda.

Ukraine, which supported the draft resolution at the Security Council, was among 21 countries that did not turn up for the vote.

The measure was sent to the General Assembly after it was vetoed by the United States at the Security Council on Monday, although all other 14 council members voted in favor.

“The United States will remember this day,” US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the assembly.

“America will put our embassy in Jerusalem,” Haley said. “No vote in the United Nations will make any difference on that.

“But this vote will make a difference on how Americans look at the UN and on how we look at countries who disrespect us in the UN,” she said.

“When we make generous contributions to the UN we also have a legitimate expectation that our goodwill is recognized and respected.”

While resolutions by the General Assembly are non-binding, a strong vote in support carries political weight.

Israel seized the largely-Arab eastern sector of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, claiming both sides of the city as its “eternal and undivided capital.”

But the Palestinians want the eastern sector as the capital of their future state and fiercely oppose any Israeli attempt to extend sovereignty there.

Several UN resolutions call on Israel to withdraw from territory seized in 1967 and the resolution contains the same language as past motions adopted by the assembly.

Ambassador Danny Danon

Israel’s envoy to the United Nations vowed Thursday that his country would never be “driven” from Jerusalem as UN member states prepared to vote on rejecting Washington’s recognition of the Holy City as its capital.

“No General Assembly resolution will ever drive us from Jerusalem,” Ambassador Danny Danon told an emergency session of the 193-nation assembly.

A draft resolution rejecting the US move was sent to the General Assembly after it was vetoed by the United States at the Security Council on Monday, although all other 14 council members voted in favor.

Mr. Olaseni Shalom

The United Global Resolve for Peace (UGRFP), an NGO, has condemned the lynching of a woman caught allegedly trying to kidnap two children from their school in Ilorin on the pretence of being sent by their mother.
UGRFP’s Executive Director, Mr Olaseni Shalom, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, said that such act was cruel and extra-judicial.
Shalom said that the woman was apprehended by the school authorities; and while the school management was deliberating on what to do with her, a passerby heard the mother’s condemnations and raised an alarm.
He said that the passerby’s alarm attracted a huge crowd to the scene which led the woman away and set her ablaze.
When contacted, Kwara Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, adding that the deed had been done before policemen arrived the scene.
“This act should be condemned globally; it is an act of intolerance; impatience as well as cruelty.
“The woman had already been apprehended and further actions would have been taken against her in the court of law.
“The law was made for a reason and such lawlessness should not be condoned.’’
UGRFP said that in furtherance of its efforts to promote peace, the group held a meeting with the traditional ruler of Ikare Akoko, Ondo, Oba Akadiri Momoh, as well as the Dean of Student Affairs,  Adeyemi College of Education, Mr Olaniyi Olaluwoye.
He said that both meetings emphasised on the ineffectiveness and corrupt nature of the judicial system.
Shalom said that the meetings pointed out the work needed to be done in order to fully stop jungle justice.
The executive director said that the group also met with the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) at Ondo-West Local Government Area.
“This meeting was held to understand the role of the law enforcement agencies in tackling jungle justice and what can be done to restore trust between law enforcement agencies and the people.
“The NSCDC identified the major causes of jungle justice as Ignorance, disregard for the rule of law and lack of trust in the society,’’ he said.
He said that the proposed deliberative meeting scheduled for Thursday in Igbokoda, Ilaje area of Ondo State had been postponed due to the high level of insecurity in the area.
Shalom said that the group was advised by security agencies to put off the meeting.
He added that UGRFP was still making efforts to restore peace in the area and ensure that attackers of Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo were brought to book.

Rotimi Amaechi(R) & Dakuku Peterside(L)

The House of Representatives on Thursday held a public hearing on the ceding of the nation’s waterways to some foreign companies.

The House of Representatives Committee on Public petitions is probing the planned $195m concession of the nation’s waterways to foreign companies.

Minister of Transport, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, and the Director-General of NIMASA, Mr Dakuku Peterside, were among those present at the hearing.

The hearing was, however, adjourned after the committee was informed that the Navy had not received its invitation and was not prepared to respond to questions.

The House of Representatives decided to probe the planned concession on December 7 after some civil society organisations petitioned the Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara, over it.

Chairman of the Public Petitions Committee, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, explained at the time that the petitioners questioned the merit behind giving the concession for the management and provision of security of the waterways to an Israeli security firm when the country had statutory agencies such as the Navy and NIMASA.

The number of suspected cholera cases in war-torn Yemen has reached one million, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday.

“Yemen suspected cholera cases has reached the threshold of one million, amplifying the suffering of the country caught up in a brutal war,” the ICRC said on its Yemen Twitter account.

The World Health Organization warned in November that some 2,200 people have already died from the waterborne disease, which has propagated rapidly due to deteriorating hygiene and sanitation conditions.

Marc Poncin, the emergency coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Yemen, told AFP that cholera mortality rates had been on a downtrend in recent months but that the disease was far from vanquished.

“The vibrio is a very resistant bacteria that can survive in water for a very long period of time,” Poncin said, warning that next year’s rainy season could bring an uptick.

“As soon as there is a favourable situation for its increase then it’s there,” he added.

Yemen is in the midst of a bloody war between pro-government forces backed by a Saudi-led coalition and Huthi rebels who control the capital.

Coalition air raids killed 43 Huthi fighters in the Red Sea province of Hodeida in the past day alone, amid a push by pro-government forces to advance toward a key port there, medical and military sources said.

Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies intervened in the conflict on the side of the government in 2015 with air strikes and a far-reaching blockade on its neighbour’s air and sea ports.

In early November, the coalition tightened that blockade in response to a missile fired by the Shiite Huthis that was intercepted near Riyadh airport.

At the time, the UN aid chief warned the move would exacerbate an already dire humanitarian situation.

The blockade was partially lifted three weeks later under massive international pressure, namely over the closure of Hodeida port — key to humanitarian and commercial deliveries.

The Iran-backed Huthis on Tuesday conducted another failed missile strike against Riyadh to mark the 1,000th day since the Saudi-led intervention.

The coalition said in a statement Wednesday that it would not resort to closing rebel-held Hodeida in the wake of the attack.

More than 8,750 people have been killed since Saudi Arabia and its allies joined the government’s fight against the rebels, triggering what the UN has called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

The U.S. is making plans for a military solution to the North Korea crisis and looking for ways to stop the development of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme, media reported, citing sources.
Three sources, including two former U.S. officials and a figure in administration, confirmed to The Telegraph newspaper that military options were being considered in the White House.
“The Pentagon is trying to find options that would allow them to punch the North Koreans in the nose, get their attention and show that we’re serious,” they said, as quoted by the newspaper.
The sources said that the White House has “dramatically” accelerated preparation for the military solution over recent months.
One of the options examined by the U.S. authorities is destroying a missile launch site to prevent Pyongyang from using it for a new test, according to the newspaper.
Washington hopes that it would show North Korean leader Kim Jong-un the U.S. determination to halt further nuclear development and trigger negotiations with Pyongyang.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula has deteriorated significantly this year due to North Korea’s missile and nuclear tests, all conducted in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions.
The United States and its allies have, in response, conducted massive military exercises in South Korea and in the vicinity of the Korean peninsula, and deployed military equipment in the region.

A young Palestinian woman was arrested early Tuesday morning, a day after a video of her punching, slapping and kicking two Israeli soldiers in a West Bank village went viral.
Female Border Police and Israeli army soldiers removed 16-year-old Ahed Tamimi from her home in Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah, and she was brought in for questioning, the Israel Defense Forces said.
The video, filmed during the weekly protest held in the village on Friday, shows Tamimi assaulting the soldiers in an attempt to draw a response.
Other women are seen in the clip, including one filming the incident, who also attacks the soldiers later. The soldiers did not respond to the attacks by Tamimi and others.
The clip, which was filmed by someone standing farther away from the incident, went viral on various social networks on Monday.
In the clip, Tamimi and another young woman approach one of the soldiers and Tamimi pushes and shoves him.
After does not respond to the provocation, as it seems the women wanted, Tamimi continues to slap and kick him.
She also comes up to the other soldier and tries to assault him, as does the other young woman.
Two older women join the two teenagers and also push the soldiers while Tamimi continues to attack them. The soldiers show restraint and do not respond in any way.
Before the beginning of the events seen in the film, Palestinians threw rocks at soldiers from inside a house in Nabi Saleh, said the IDF.
The soldiers then removed the rock throwers from inside the house and refused to let them reenter. At this stage, “a number of Palestinians came out to the soldiers with the goal of causing a provocation,” said the army.
The IDF said a preliminary inquiry into the incident found the “commander acted professionally by not being dragged into [the use of] violence.”
But the army said they could have arrested the young women at the time of the incident “but because they used physical violence and because of the fact that they tried to interfere with soldiers carrying out their duties.”
The young women shown assaulting the soldiers “should finish their lives in prison,” Education Minister Naftali Bennett told Army Radio on Tuesday morning.
“The pictures are harsh We have an excellent [IDF] chief of staff, I trust that the incident will be investigated, the lessons will be learned and those activists who attacked will be tried,” said Bennett.
Attacking a soldier is a crime which carries a punishment of up to seven years in prison, he added. “Their place is in prison, and I expect they will be arrested,” he said.
“I don’t intend on giving grades to soldiers,” he said about the incident. “I was a soldier in similar situations too.”
Tamimi’s father Bassem, a well-known Palestinian activist, posted on Facebook about the arrest, saying that his daughter stopped a soldier “in front of our house when he shot a child on his head.”
He said the army searched the house, stole the family’s phones, cameras and laptop and beat his wife and children. “[F]ree Ahed Tamimi,” he added.
The teenager has been involved a number of similar incidents with Israeli soldiers. In a 2015 video clip, she tries to prevent soldiers from making an arrest in Nabi Saleh.
In the clip, a soldier attempting to detain a youth who had been throwing rocks is attacked by a number of women, including Tamimi. Ultimately the commander in charge ordered the soldier to release the youth.

Chief Innocent Chukwuma

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it has  released on bail,   Anambra state-born industrialist, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, better known as Innoson.
The business man who runs a local auto assembly plant was arrested on Tuesday December 19, 2017 at his Enugu residence, following his refusal to respond to invitations by the Commission, after initially being granted administrative bail by the Commission, while his surety could also not be found.

According to the EFCC, the industrialist resisted arrest and stirred controversy by bringing six truck-loads of thugs to block the entrance to his Plot W1, Industrial Layout, Abakaliki Road, Emeni, Enugu, home.

This was after he initially misled the Police Command by informing them that his home had been invaded by armed robbers and kidnappers despite the fact that operatives of the Commission duly identified themselves to policemen guarding his home.

His unruly thugs encircled and manhandled operatives of the Commission who had gone to effect the arrest.

Consequently, a distress call was sent to the Commission’s Enugu Office for reinforcement.

In all of this, the Commission’s operatives acted with decorum and civility. No one was manhandled or assaulted by the EFCC team, and not a single shot was fired, despite the provocation.

Chief Chukwuma and his brother, Charles Chukwuma (who is still at large), are being investigated by the Insurance and Capital Market Fraud Section of the Commission’s office in Lagos over matters bordering on N1, 478, 366, 859.66 fraud and forgery.

The industrialist, among other infractions, allegedly used forged documents to secure tax waivers.

The Senate has mandated its Committee on Anti–Corruption and Financial Crimes to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Innoson Motors’ boss, Mr Innocent Chukwuma, and report back on Thursday.
The upper chamber also mandated the committee to investigate claims that an EFCC operative slapped Chukwuma’s wife, during the raid of his house in Enugu.
It called for the immediate and unconditional release of the businessman.
Chukwuma was reportedly arrested at his Enugu home on Tuesday by operatives of EFCC over alleged refusal to repay a loan to Guaranty Trust Bank.
Coming under the Senate Standing Rules, Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, said the arrest of the businessman was a national disgrace and an abuse of his fundamental human rights.
He urged Senators to prevail on the EFCC, to immediately release the man and also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call Magu to order in the discharge of his duties.
According to him, the EFCC erred to have to intervene in a civil matter involving a commercial bank and a private citizen.
“The detention of Innocent Chukwuma, owner of Innoson Motors, is the issue. It is purely a civil matter. At the inception of this Senate, we took an oath to defend the constitution.
“A policeman arrested him. He asked what his offence was. He was told he would be told when they got to the station.
“The constitution is clear that no person should be detained more than 24 hours without telling him his offence. As I speak, he is yet to be told of his offence.
“What I gathered is that he was arrested by the EFCC over a certain money he is owing the GTBank.
“Instead of them to settle it, EFCC got involved and arrested him like a common criminal. He was bundled like a criminal.
“If we allow the EFCC to get involved in things like this, we will be setting a bad precedence. This is a man who has created over 50,000 jobs in a country where there are no jobs.”
In his contribution, Sen. Eyinnaya Abaribe (PDP-Abia) said if the Senate failed to act, members might soon become victims.
“If we are not careful and deal with this issue, we will all fall victim of this issue.
“It was a principal officer that was invited here. That matter will be brought here later. We do not know what motivates the EFCC.
“EFCC, in its own Twitter handle, said it arrested Innoson boss because he did not honour their invitation.
“The man said he was not invited. Who is lying? EFCC will lie and put you on your head because they have the means.”
On his part, Sen. Barnabas Gemade (APC-Benue) said the arrest of Chukwuma was an abuse and misuse of power.
He said it is wrong for the EFCC to arrest a reputable entrepreneur and warned that it could send wrong signals to his foreign partners.
President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, said the action of EFCC did not speak well of the country.
He said in the United States of America, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) does not get involved in trivial issues like this.
“Truly, those who have contributed have raised important issues. As a society, this does not speak well for the country.
“How a private transaction has become the business of the EFCC is what I do not know.
“I have not seen the FBI intervene between people involved in a transaction. We are just making a mockery of the institution.”
