David Missal, a German student

Chinese Government has expelled David Missal, a German student for exposing the plight of jailed human rights lawyers.
The 24-year-old Missal was pursuing a master’s degree in journalism and communication at prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing.
He left for Germany on Sunday, after immigration authorities told him his student visa was canceled and he had a week to leave China.
Missal had reported on the plight of jailed human rights lawyers in a journalism class.
The German student said a Tsinghua representative this year warned him twice against pursuing the politically sensitive subject, but he went ahead anyway because he wanted to “get to learn Chinese society and politics.”
“In a way, the last two months I did get to learn more Chinese society and politics,” Missal said, referring to his own case.
China questioned, detained and in some cases formally arrested around 300 people nationwide starting from July 9, 2015, as part of its biggest crackdown on human rights lawyers and activists.
Several received lengthy sentences for subversion of state power while a few still await sentencing.
The action against Missal underscores China’s extreme sensitivity to foreign attention to the crackdown, word of which has rarely appeared in China’s entirely state controlled media and on the heavily policed Chinese internet.
Missal said his work was never published beyond his personal blog and YouTube, which he thinks was seen by less than 100 people.
Tsinghua’s propaganda office said it could not immediately comment and had to look into the case.

Youth Alive Foundation(YAF), a Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO), on Sunday in Abuja urged the Federal Government to get the youths actively involved in the fight against corruption.
Speaking at an event tagged, “Safe Spaces for Youth: the Barrier of Corruption,’’ Dr Udy Okon, the Executive Director, YAF, said that it was fundamental for youths to be engaged.
According to Okon, the event is organised to commemorate the International Youth Day which is a global day for youths.
She said the event brought youths together with some stakeholders in order to deliberate on how spaces could be created for youths and how corruption was shrinking those spaces.
The executive director also said the event afforded the opportunity to amplify the needs of youths and why it was important for government and people to look at youth development.
Okon said creating spaces for youths for them to participate in the anti-graft war was not only the responsibility of the federal government but non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well.
She said that in any activity going on, either in business, government or otherwise, spaces should be created to accommodate youths for an assured tomorrow.
Okon pointed out that the YAF had taken tremendous strides in engaging Nigerian youths to combat corruption.
She maintained that one of the areas the foundation has done this is the creation of safe digital spaces for youths.
According to her, youths don’t know enough about governance and if good governance is needed in the next 20-30 years, youths ought to  educated on the demographic of good governance.’’
She said that to make it simple for youths, the foundation went ahead to design a mobile digital for youths.
“This will allow them do whatever they want to do in their own way and at the same time learn about governance.’’
“YAF has a facebook community where we can work together, collaborate and advocate some issues. That’s creating a civic space.
“With the effort of the United Kingdom, we are working on projects which anchor on increasing youth participation in the fight against corruption,’’ she said.
Okon said the project is titled Wipe-out, with the intent to consolidate and achieve on what they had been working for in the past year, which is engaging youths in governance and anti-graft.
She noted that recently there had been remarkable impacts and results in different states like Kano, Lagos and Rivers state where the activities of youths have brought positive changes.
She said that the government would do well if youths were equipped in the fight against corruption which is a menace to the society.
The event had in attendance Mr John Primose from the British High Commission, Aisha Yesufu, co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls(BBOG), political analysts among others.

Four members of the Jordanian security forces and three “terrorists” have been killed during a raid on a militant hideout after an officer died in a bomb blast near the capital, the government said Sunday.

Five suspects were also arrested during Saturday’s raid in connection with the home-made bomb that exploded under a patrol car at a music festival.

A joint unit of special forces, police and army troops raided a house in the town of Salt northwest of Amman in search of a suspected “terrorist cell”, government spokeswoman Jumana Ghneimat said.

She said the militants were sought in connection with Friday night’s bombing that killed a police sergeant and wounded six others in the town of Al-Fuhais west of Amman.

“The suspects refused to surrender and opened heavy fire toward a joint security force,” Ghneimat said on Saturday.

They also “blew up the building in which they were hiding, and which they had booby-trapped earlier”, she added.

Three members of the security forces were killed in the shootout with the gunmen who were holed up in an apartment in a four-storey residential bloc in Salt, she said in a statement.

A fourth who was critically wounded died of his injuries on Sunday, she added.

The bodies of three “terrorists” as well as automatic weapons were found under the rubble of the building, and a total of five militants were arrested during the operation, Ghneimat said.

Bomb blasts targeting security forces are rare in Jordan, although the small desert kingdom bordering Syria and Iraq has had to struggle with a rise in Muslim fundamentalism in recent years.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Friday’s bomb blast in Al-Fuhais, a mostly Christian town, and the identities of the suspects were not known.

“A clean-up operation is still under way,” Ghneimat said, adding that units of the civil defence were at the scene to assess the damage at the building and sift through the rubble.

Ghneimat urged civilians to stay away, warning that “it could totally collapse at any minute”.

An excavator was later seen demolishing the structure.

– Crisis cell –

Medical sources said that 11 people were wounded during the raid, including members of the security forces and civilians who were residents of the building where the militants were hiding.

Women and children were among those hurt, they said, without giving further details.

Ambulances, bulldozers and police cars were deployed around the building in the Naqab al-Dabour residential neighbourhood in Salt, television footage showed.

The government set up a crisis cell to follow the developments, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz, who chaired the meeting, vowed Saturday that Jordan would “not be complacent in the hunt for terrorists”.

Jordan has played a key role in the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, using its air force against the jihadists and allowing coalition forces to use its bases.

The kingdom was hit by a string of attacks in 2016, including a shooting rampage claimed by IS that killed 10 people including a Canadian tourist in Karak, known for its Crusader castle.

The United States “strongly condemned” the attacks against Jordanian security forces in Al-Fuhais and in Salt, in a statement released Sunday by its Amman embassy.

“The United States stands in solidarity with Jordan in the face of these terrorist actions and emphasizes our shared resolve to counter the plague of terrorism,” the statement said.

A 12-year-old boy has been found alive in the wreckage of a plane crash which killed eight people in Indonesia.
Photos from the scene show the boy conscious and looking at the camera.
He was found with the wreckage on a mountainside near the border with Papua New Guinea on Sunday morning.
The Swiss-made Pilatus aircraft he had been travelling in lost contact with air traffic control on Saturday afternoon, shortly before it was due to land at Oksibil airport.
The plane, owned by private charter Dimonim Air, had been travelling from Tanah Merah, about 40 minutes flight south, to Oksibil in the province of Papua when it went down.
It was carrying nine people, including two crew members.
According to news agency AFP, nearby villagers heard a “loud roar followed by an explosion”.
An investigation into the cause of the crash will be carried out, officials said.
The Straitstimes.com reported that Indonesia relies heavily on air transport to connect its thousands of islands but has a poor aviation safety record and has suffered several fatal crashes in recent years.
Papua is a particularly difficult area to reach.
Five people died after a small plane crashed near Wamena in Papua province in July last year.
In August 2015, a commercial passenger aircraft operated by Indonesian carrier Trigana crashed in Papua due to bad weather, killing all 54 people on board.

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has demanded N10bn from the Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, Adams Oshiomhole.

The governor, through his legal counsel, Samuel Irabor, demanded that Oshiomhole should within seven days retract the libellous statements he made against him in 10 national dailies and in the prime beat of national television and radio.

Ortom also asked for N10bn as punitive, general exemplary and aggravated damages.

The governor said that the national chairman had, during a press conference, made wild allegations against his administration on security votes, non-payment of salaries and the killings in the state.

“It boggles the mind to begin the process of thinking that led to your unconscionable statement that ‘Benue Christians’ are responsible for the mass killings and sustainable genocide against their own people”, he said.

The governor’s counsel said that since his client exercised his political freedom by moving to a party that guaranteed safety for his kinsmen, Oshiomhole had embarked on a campaign of hatred and propaganda against his person.

He however called on the national chairman to within seven days of receipt of the letter meet all the demands or face legal action.

Ellie Holman and daughter detained in Dubai after drinking complimentary glass of wine on Emirates flight

A mother Ellie Holman, from Kent, England, and her young daughter will not forget in a hurry their experience in jail in Dubai for three days after the woman admitted drinking a glass of alcoholic wine on Emirates flight.
Holman was allegedly denied water and forced to clean toilets – after she admitted to drinking a glass of wine on the incoming Emirates flight from London.
It’s illegal to drink alcohol or be intoxicated in public in Dubai, one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates.
A human rights group Detained in Dubai said upon arrival in Dubai, an official reportedly told Holman she needed to return to the United Kingdom immediately because of an invalid visa, at which point she took out her phone and started filming the encounter.
Holman said the official was “dismissive and rude” to her, and asked if she had been consuming alcohol.
She admitted to the official that she had a complimentary glass of wine on the Emirates flight.
Reports say Holman was unaware that it was an offense to film the encounter, and illegal to drink alcohol.
Detained in Dubai, further said that Holman and her daughter also had their passports and electronic devices confiscated.
Holman said in a statement to Detained in Dubai that the prison guards also attempted to pull out her hair extensions, and the prison facility was “hot and foul-smelling.” She claimed she and her daughter were forced to sleep on a “filthy mattress” and to clean toilets.
She said her husband and friends tried to visit her in jail, but they were not allowed to see her.
Meanwhile, Holman has been told she is free to go home after she received an apology from the Dubai Government over her detention which saw her locked up with her four year old daughter for three days.
Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed

She was told in a telephone call that she can leave at any time and will not face any charges.
The Dubai Government has also said they will pay for the flights home.
“I can’t believe this is over. When I got the call from the government telling me they were dropping the case I was in shock.
“I was told to prepare for a long stay in Dubai and a prison sentence. The man on the phone apologised on behalf of the immigration official who put me and Bibi through all of this. I feel like a weight is off my chest.
The 44 year old dentist was with her two eldest children who had flown out to Dubai for a visit when she received the news and said she was ‘ecstatic.’
Dr Holman’s release came after the personal intervention of Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed.
Dubai, which attracts over 14m visitors each year, is heavily dependent on tourism.
The publicity about Dr Holman’s arrest for drinking a glass of wine could have had a deterrent effect on future travellers.

Cross River Governor, Ben Ayade

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has received the concept design for the full commencement of construction work on the proposed Bakassi Deep Seaport.
The design was presented to him by a Chinese firm, China Harbour Engineering company led by Mr Jason Wang.
The governor announced that full-scale construction work will begin as soon as the rains subsided.
According to him, one of the special features of the Bakassi Deep Seaport is its access to the 275 kilometres evacuation corridor which connects to some other states.
Ayade receives design for Seaport
“The government has focused on creating an alternative income by decoupling ourselves of our dependence on Federal Government allocations.
“It is against that background that the Bakassi Deep Seaport with an evacuation corridor is borne.
“The special advantage of our Bakassi Deep Seaport is its access to a wide armada of great opportunity via her evacuation corridor.’’
He urged the people to be patient, show commitment and prayerful to ensure that the project was realized.
“It is my wish and prayer that the people of Cross River State will rise beyond the boundaries of politics and focus heavily on the future of our young people,” he said.
