The British Government said its army trained no fewer than 22,000 Nigerian army personnel in 2016. Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, UK Minister of State for the United Nations, stated this at the Security Council briefing on the Group of five (G5) Sahel Joint Force.

He said: “The British Army trained 22,000 Nigerian troops in counter terrorism tactics last year alone. “We have invested over six million dollars in tackling modern slavery, and $2.5 million in a Joint Border task force with the Nigerian Army. “We also provide training for Nigerian anti trafficking officers”. He added that “we all have a role to play in addressing these challenges.

“The United Kingdom has supported projects across the Sahel and wider region, particularly in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin”. He said across the Sahel, the UK spent over 225 million dollars on humanitarian and development projects last year, and we are providing human rights training to Malian troops through the EU Training Mission in Mali.

“Our National Crime Agency recently dismantled two people-smuggling rings in Mali.  And we stand ready to do more to support the G5 countries, and their allies, to improve the security situation.”

He said the creation of the G5 Sahel Joint Force is a step forward in countering terrorism and illegal migration. “We were pleased that this Council offered its political support to the mission earlier this year.

“For our part the United Kingdom is currently undertaking a scoping mission to see what more we can do in the Sahel, including potential bilateral support to the G5 Sahel Joint Force,” he said.

He regretted that in the last 12 months, there had been a continuing stream of deadly terrorist attacks resulting in the tragic loss of innocent lives.

He regretted an increase in attacks against the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali forces, and the ongoing corrosive influence of organised criminals trafficking weapons, drugs and people across the region.

He also pointed out the desperate journey of migrants, so often intercepted by people traffickers seeking to exploit them. “During the recent Security Council visit, all Council members saw the serious challenges facing the countries of the Sahel.

“Those challenges represent a serious danger to the people of the region, and to partners and allies who are working to support them. “I want to begin by offering my condolences to all of those so tragically killed, including most recently three UN peacekeepers from Chad in northern Mali on Thursday,” he said.

The major opposition party in the country, The Peoples Democratic Party has described as unacceptable the sack of Babachir Lawal and Ayo One, until recently, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and the Director General of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) respectively, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The party bemoaned the reaction of the President, saying relieving the duo of their jobs was a “Slap on the face of Nigerians.”

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the PDP condemned the manner the allegations of sleaze against the two government officials was handled by the President Buhari- led government.

“The statement on the sack of Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Ayo Oke, the former Director General of Nigerian Intelligent Agency (NIA) is a slap on the face of Nigerians. It is an insult on the collective intelligence of our people who have waited patiently for the President’s reaction on the humongous act of corruption by two of his principal aides and this is totally unacceptable.

“First and foremost, we had disagreed with the President last year when he decided to setup the panel headed by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to investigate the matter because we thought that was the wrong course of action to take.

Ordinarily, cases of corruption or alleged cases of misappropriation of funds are supposed to be referred to institutions that are saddled with the responsibility to investigate and prosecute such matters which is the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if there is any prima facie case against them. But it appears not all animals are equal under the Buhari All Progressives Congress (APC) administration,” the statement read in part.

The party also berated the APC administration for an allege bias in the fight against corruption, saying thus far, the opposition has been singled out for ” harrowing experiences.”

“Some people are treated with kid gloves while others particularly those in opposition are subjected to all manner of harrowing experiences.

“One of the Senators of the APC, Senator Shehu Sani of Kaduna State succinctly put the matter when he said that this administration uses deodorant to fight corruption when it comes to some APC members and President Buhari’s kitchen Cabinet and insecticides when it involves members of the opposition and those in the National Assembly.

Expressing worry over the length of time it took President Buhari to take action on the matter, the party said members of the PDP facing similar charges were being treated differently.

“It took the President almost one year to attend to this matter while the culprits were having a field day at home and enjoying themselves. Whereas, in the case of the opposition especially the PDP members, even when the evidence is flimsy they will be visited with multiple harassment and intimidation for months and weeks without proper trial.

“We cite the case of Sambo Dasuki who has been in detention for over two years and running even when many courts in Nigeria and the ECOWAS Court have ordered for his release, but the President has fragrantly disobeyed these court orders which again are a violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This is an impeachable offence. So the President cannot just sack Ayo Oke and Babachir Lawal and expects us to be clapping for him.

“We believe that we are operating under a democracy and a Constitution that governs our affairs. To have subjected these people to different sets of rule and treatment is totally unacceptable. Nigerians are the same under the law and Babachir Lawal and Ayo Oke should not be tried by the Presidency while others are hounded by the EFCC and ICPC.

“These actions of Mr. President are therefore a breach of his oath of office which he swore to defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to be fair and just to all Nigerians without any discrimination whatsoever.

“The action of the President is a gross violation of his constitutional oath and therefore constitutes a veritable ground for impeachment. Using and applying different laws to different people in the country is a direct assault on the constitution and the rule of law .

“Consequently, we call on the National Assembly to begin processes to impeach the President for breach of the Constitution and fragrance disobedient to the laws of Nigeria.

“The President has by his actions taken Nigeria to the level of a banana republic,” the party wrote adding that “Three successive governments of the PDP did not act in the manner President Buhari is acting.”

According to the party, “The sudden sack of the SGF and the DG of NIA is just a consequence of the backlash on the Abdulrasheed Maina saga. Up till now there’s no answer to the pertinent questions we have asked on the Maina saga.

“This kind of arrogance is unprecedented in the history of this county. We again call for the arrest and investigation of the two Ministers involved in the return of Maina into the Civil Service, that is, the Minister of Interior, Bello Dambazau and Abubakar Mallami , the Attorney General of the federation.”

APC national leader,  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has dispelled the rumour of an existing cabal in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, saying it was both myth and fake news.
Tinubu spoke with State House Correspondents after a closed door meeting with Buhari ahead of the party’s caucus meeting in Abuja.
He said the APC is a party for the people, by the people and for the people adding that “it is a democratic environment; each of us has our roles to play and that is how we are playing it.
“I don’t believe in the myth; I believe in the confidence building, the trust that we have in the President and in building that confidence in a journey of democracy you are going to have twists and turns.
“Conflict resolution mechanism is inbuilt in how you handle your party; the governance and the party are joined by the hips.’’

“And we remain focused to those necessary things about the development, the welfare and progress of our people.’’

“That brought me very excited and happy.’’
Tinubu also debunked insinuations that he was not in the good terms with the President and had been sidetracked by the cabals describing it as “fake news’’.
“I have confidence in this President; there is no doubt about it.
“We worked hard to bring a government about but there are certain things that are unpredictable and those are things that can lend itself to gossip, insinuations and all of that.
“But once you create leadership and it is functional you don’t have to baby-sit that leadership unless there is an old strain of confidence.
“They don’t have that; so you know me I am not known to shy away from talking my mind and rebelling if it is necessary and taking charge of things I believe are necessary,’’ he added.

Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu says President Muhammadu Buhari will not stop the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from its investigation against Babachir Lawal and Ayo Oke, who were relieved of their appointments.
Shehu, who stated on Monday in Abuja, said President Buhari had taken the necessary administrative action against the two officials.
President Buhari, had on Oct. 30, approved the appointment of Boss Mustapha as the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), and terminated the appointment of the suspended SGF, Babachir Lawal.
The President, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, also approved the termination of the appointment of the suspended Director-General National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Amb. Ayo Oke.
The presidential aide said: “”The President has taken the administrative action. All other actions will be taken by relevant government agencies.
““The position of the President, therefore, is that investigative agencies, which have already commenced the investigation of the two officers removed from office, will go on with their work of investigation without any interference or hindrance.’’
According to Shehu, President Buhari is fully conversant with the provisions of the constitution and will not stop the investigation of anyone “because he has no such power under our laws, adding this is a decision of the Supreme Court.
“”The President under our laws can, through the Attorney General enter a nolle prosequi to stop an on-going trial. He may upon conviction, order a pardon.
“”Beyond these, the president cannot order investigation agencies to not investigate anyone and does not intend to do so in this, or any other circumstance.
”Based on his wish and desire for a strict observance of the law, the President expects the EFCC, ICPC and such agencies to proceed with ongoing investigations..
”When and where they have reasonable grounds to charge former or serving officers to court under our laws, they do not require the permission of the President to do so.’’(NAN/LR News)
