The management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), on Monday warned consumers within its network against paying its personnel for installation of the company’s prepaid meters.
Mr Godwin Idemudia, the General Manager, EKEDC gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
According to him, complaints have reached the company that some personnel are collecting money for installation from consumers who had been given meters free.
“As long as the meters are free, installation is also free.
“If there are other back end equipment that are needed on the part of the customers like Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) and cables, they should provide that on their own ready for installation.
“So, if they request for money before installing the meter, please ignore them.
“Some consumers who bribe our staff for bypassing lines that connect their freezers, air-conditioners and other electrical gadgets should know that it is absolutely illegal.
“If you are caught during the routine check by our staff, you will be fined for bypassing and charged to court,” he said.
The General Manager urged consumers to desist from bribing staff of the company on official assignment.
“It is wrong for our staff to demand for money before clearing electricity faults because that’s what they are being paid for.
“Consumers should be aware that it is also wrong to connive with our staff not to settle electricity bills appropriately.
“Consumers should report any EKEDC staff that demands for money to the nearest EKEDC office for proper action,’’ he said.

The Kwara Government has disbursed over N1billion to 500 smallholder farmers and 40 commercial farmers to boost agriculture and food security in the state.
Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara made this known on Monday in Ilorin, while speaking at the 2nd Harmony Agriculture International Fair (HAGIF).
He said that the government had also provided 2,550 hectares of land for smallholder farmers in the state.
He also said that 381 kilometres of rural roads would be rehabilitated in 2018 under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), in partnership with the World Bank and the Federal Government.
Ahmed described the Off-Takers Demand Driving Agriculture (ODDA) Scheme as an empowerment programme that was initiated to drive employment, boost food production and diversify the state’s economy.
He said that the objective of the scheme was to match farmers with off-takers who would purchase the harvested produce directly from the farmers
The governor said that his administration had, over their years, embarked on various intervention programmes, which were aimed at provoking the people’s attitudinal change towards agriculture in the state.
Ahmed listed such intervention programmes as the Back to Farm programme, the Youth Farm Centre and the ODDA Scheme, among others.
He said that the programmes were part of the commercial agriculture initiative of his administration.
“ODDA is designed to build an agribusiness ecosystem that will reduce food importation, enhance foreign exchange and more importantly, create sustainable livelihoods for our people, especially youths and women,” he added.
Ahmed said that by the coming harvest season, the state would witness the emergence of a new generation of prosperous youth farmers.
According to him, HAGIF has a symbiotic relationship with the ODDA scheme through its agribusiness division.
Earlier, the Chairman of Harmony Holdings, Prof. Halidu Abubakar, said that the financial support which the state government gave to the company had enabled it to give out loans to over 100 cooperative societies and 1,000 farmers.
He said that the goal of the company was to complement the efforts, policies and programmes of the state government in its agricultural transformation agenda.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the clash between the security aides attached to Governor Nyesom Wike and Mr Rotimi Amaechi in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Jimoh Moshood, revealed the decision of the police boss on Monday during his appearance on Channels Television’s State of the Nation.

“The Inspector General of Police has directed a thorough investigation into the incident that happened in Rivers State over the escorts that have infractions on the road,” he said.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong with the two personalities having police protection in the first place.”

The police decision came two days after what was supposed to be a routine inspection exercise by Governor Wike turned controversial when his convoy came head to head with that of Mr Amaechi at Nwanja junction in Trans Amadi area in the state capital.

A clash occurred after men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) attached to Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, reportedly knocked down Wike’s escort rider apparently in a way to make way for the former governor.

The tension was, however, heightened when some of the SARS operatives allegedly cocked the guns, resulting in the chief security detail to the governor physically chasing the men away.
Moshood, on his part, said the matter would not be swept under the carpet and that was why the IGP directed a thorough probe into the incident.

He said: “The result of the investigation will be made public and we will make every Nigerian know what has gone wrong and the directive of the Inspector General of Police will be communicated down the line.

“We want everybody to know that Police Force is a disciplined organisation and even in advanced countries, you will see an incident where people who work within the same organisation have a misunderstanding; but the quick intervention of the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State equally saved the day.”

The police spokesman further warned against circulating false reports after the incident, saying what happened in Rivers State does not portray the performance of the force.

He maintained that erring officers would be made to face the consequences of their actions, adding that the police will not overlook the incident.

“People with ulterior motives are trying to create unnecessary sensationalism in this regards; the Police Force is a disciplined organisation,” Moshood said.

“Where one or two officers err, that does not mean that is the total reflection of the performance of all other officers in the force – so this matter will not be swept under the carpet, it will be thoroughly investigated and we will keep the public posted.”

Two U.S. police team in Detroit have engaged each other in a brawl after an operation to arrest drug dealers and their customers failed.
Detroit Police Department has in the meantime commenced internal investigation into the incident as it wondered why two different precincts should engage each other on an east side neighbourhood.
Trouble started when the two special ops officers from the 12th Precinct were operating a “push off” on Andover near Seven Mile.
Two undercover officers had pretended to be dope dealers, waiting for eager customers to approach, arresting potential buyers and seizing their vehicles.
But this time instead of customers – special ops officers from the 11th Precinct showed up. Not realising they were fellow officers, they ordered the other undercover officers to the ground.
FOX 2 told the rest of the special ops team from the 12th Precinct showed up, and officers began raiding the drug house in the 19300 block of Andover.
But instead of fighting crime, officers from both precincts began fighting with each other.
Sources say guns were drawn and punches were thrown while the homeowner stood and watched.
The department’s top cops were notified along with Internal Affairs. One officer was taken to the hospital.
Each officer involved is now under investigation – as the department tried to determine what went wrong.
“You have to have more communication,” said the resident. “I don’t understand what happened about that – communicate.”
FOX 2 is told one of the units had body camera video that detailed the entire incident. That is now part of the internal investigation and we are working to get our hands on it.
We’re told top brass doesn’t plan to comment on this until next week.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will meet with critical stakeholders on Wednesday to appraise the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
JAMB spokesperson Fabian Benjamin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos, that the meeting, scheduled to hold in Abuja, would brainstorm on the conduct of the examination and identify possible areas for review.
Among the stakeholders expected at the meeting were Foreign Affairs Ministry officials, university lecturers, vice- chancellors and rectors of polytechnics, he said.
“We are also expecting top media executives, state commissioners of education and heads of colleges of education.
“Other stakeholders expected at the meeting are labour unions of Nigeria universities such as ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), among others,’’ he said
Benjamin said the board had held a similar meeting with owners of Computer Based Test (CBT) centres and administrators nationwide to appraise the registration and conduct of the 2017 UTME.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, had during meeting with administrators of the CBT centres announced new measures that would further strengthen the integrity and general conduct of the examination.
Oloyede had also banned the use of pens, wrist watches and other devices as part of the newly introduced measures for the 2018 UTME.
According to him, experience has shown that some candidates were using the devices to perpetrate examination malpractices.
NAN reports no fewer than 617 centres had been accredited nationwide for the examination while 72 others waiting for approval.

The Presidency has uncovered plan by politicians with intellectual and moral bankruptcy to destroy national institutions and everything good about Nigeria.
Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity made the allegation when he reacted to recent interview by former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido.
He said in a statement in Abuja on Sunday that the politicians were particularly targeting the destruction of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the courts.
Shehu accused Lamido, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of nursing a grand plan to thwart the on-going war against corruption.
He, however, described the attacks by Lamido on President Muhammadu Buhari “as “a reflection of the intellectual and moral bankruptcy of the opposition in the country.
“It is only in Nigeria that a leader will divert money belonging to the public into his children’s account then turns round to start pontificating on public morals, in the process subjecting the nation’s honest leadership to daily attacks based on falsehood.
“It is even worse that such a person, facing criminal prosecution will start going round saying he wants to be president. Is this not one of the reasons why other countries are laughing at Nigeria?
”This is hooliganism. It is not opposition politics,’’ Shehu noted.
The presidential spokesman challenged Lamido to convince Nigerians that his trenchant attacks against the government and the judiciary were not a smokescreen to becloud the atmosphere of his criminal prosecution.
”In his diatribe published in the Vanguard newspaper last week, it is clear that the former governor not only set out to mock the President but the judiciary and important national institutions.’’
According to him, this is part of an orchestrated plot to divert public attention from his scam related cases.
He added that, “If President Buhari’s war against corruption as he said, was a mockery what does one say of Lamido’s sworn efforts to sabotage the country’s efforts to rid itself of the cancer of corruption?
“If accountability of public officials is the very essence of a mature democracy, it is indeed ironic that a politician, seeking the leadership of the country, making a mockery of institutions and leaders seeking to entrench that.
“As a country, Nigeria settled for President Buhari not just as President but the watchman of people’s wealth.”
Shehu observed that the citizens are happy with Buhari’s efforts in fighting corruption and the whole world was applauding him, while the African Union, the AU named him as the Champion of the war against corruption.
He stated that opposition politicians like Lamido needed to come to terms with the fact that their act needed updating.
Shehu further quoted Buhari Media Support Group (BMSG) that said, “the nation’s war against corruption spearheaded by EFCC was incidentally formulated by the a past PDP administration.
“It is a tragic irony that the leaders of the same party are doing their utmost to weaken or destroy it. Watch it, is that why he is seeking to lead the country?
”Time and again, President Buhari had lamented that strongmen had destroyed the country’s strong institutions and that it will take strong men to rebuild them.
“He deserves the support of everyone to rebuild such institutions because they serve a common good.”
The presidential aide, therefore, appealed to opposition politicians to give President Buhari the support he needed to rebuild national institutions such as the EFCC.
