A Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin has ruled that the five suspects arrested for the Offa robbery attack have a case to answer, even as their counsel has announced his withdrawal from the suit.

Counsel to the accused persons, Barrister Abdulrasheed Lawal, announced during the further hearing of the case on Wednesday that he is withdrawing on moral grounds.

He said further that he lacks full knowledge of the case since inception.

The Magistrate, Bio Saliu, in response granted the lawyer’s withdrawal and also consented to the claim that the accused persons have cases to answer as moved by the police prosecutor.

The police prosecutor, Jimoh Abdulkadir who held brief for the Officer-In-Charge Of Legal, Kwara State Police Command had earlier informed the Magistrate of an application submitted before the court, indicating that the suspects have cases to answer.

He added that there was a need for the police to carry on in its investigations in order to allow for the arrest of more suspects and transfer them to a proper court for trial.

The Magistrate, therefore, adjourned the case to Thursday, December 6, 2018, and ordered that the accused persons remain in prison custody.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a rights group on Wednesday commended the Lagos State Government for approving the use of Hijab for female Muslim students in all public schools.
The Director, MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, gave the commendation in Lagos while reacting to a circular released by the state government on 13th Nov, in which the approval was given.
Akintola described the step as a monumental decision, and commended the patience and steadfastness of Muslim residents and associations in Lagos State.
“The wind of change is sweeping across the South-West and no state government wants to be caught within the camp of reactionaries.
“We call on all government agencies and employers of labour to note this development. It is a monumental decision. The patience exhibited by Lagos Muslims has paid off.
“A quiet and peaceful revolution is ongoing and it is in the best interest of all men and women of goodwill to join the train before it leaves the station so that they may not be left behind.
“Reports reaching MURIC headquarters say the Tutor-General Permanent Secretary (TGPS) of District 6 has also issued a circular directing all school principals within the jurisdiction to allow female Muslim students who wish to use the Hijab to do so.
“We are yet to hear anything from Districts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. We are therefore calling on the remaining five TGPS to follow suit. Delay will simply mean insubordination and sabotage of government’s good intention.
“We congratulate the Lagos State chapters of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), the Muslim Congress (TMC), the Muslim Teachers Association of Nigeria (MUTAN) and the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN).
“We commend them for their steadfastness, patience and forbearance.
“In conclusion, we charge all the Islamic organisations in the state to immediately set up monitoring units for the successful implementation of the state government’s directive.
“Muslim parents should be mobilised to visit schools for the purpose of ensuring compliance, while we warn that nobody should take the law into his or her hands.
“Defaulting principals and recalcitrant teachers should be reported to the nearest office of Islamic organisations,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an appeal court in 2016 overturned the judgement of a Lagos State High Court which banned the use of Hijab in public primary and secondary schools in the state.
NAN also reports that the Lagos State Government is currently at the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the appellate court.

The Federal Government has approved the bearing of arms by personnel of Aviation Security (AVSEC) to enhance the National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP).
The approval has secured the support of the Aviation Round Table Safety Initiative (ART).
The President of ART, Mr Gbenga Olowo, said on Wednesday in Lagos that the primary objective of AVSEC was the protection and safety of passengers, crew, ground personnel, aircraft and facilities serving the civil aviation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, recently announced that the AVSEC officials at the airports would start bearing arms within the next three months.
He, however, noted that the participation of other security agencies in the sector for the same purposes was inevitable.
Olowo said: “Consequent to this approval, we strongly advise a review of the airport security architecture to cover elements of the various security agencies which will now form the new organogram.
“This will eliminate inter agency rivalry, foster cooperation, provide common platform to asses measure of effectiveness, process operational effectiveness and after action plans.’’
He, however, advised that the other security agencies should administratively remain under their parent agencies under the operational command and control of the new Airport Security Architecture.”
He further advised the government to ensure that selected personnel to bear arms were properly trained and tested in rudiment areas of arms handling, standard armoury and trained armourer for safe keeping of ammunition.
According to him, necessary procedure for issuance, retrieval and accountability of expended rounds if necessary, should also be put in place.
“In the 90s, we delegated and rotated the heads of security agencies serving in the airports to supervise and control night operations which is akin to the United States Transportation Security Agency (TSA) model.
“Security threats have evolved and we as a nation are challenged to find the nexus and best fit security architecture, as our security challenges cannot be the same with other nations.”

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau has warned that those who forcefully annexed ancestral homes and villages would soon be forced out soon.
“Nobody will take the land from the original owners. If you are occupying somebody’s land or house, know that you are living on borrowed time.
“It is not a matter of choice, you will be forced out soon.
Lalong gave the warning on Tuesday in Gashish community of Barkin Ladi Local Government, when he inspected the site of the proposed Mobile Police Squadron.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the community recently came under heavy attacks that left many people dead, while the survivors fled from the area.
The attackers have occupied the communities and taken over their houses, lands, livestock and economic trees.
But an angry Lalong told the “foreign” occupants that they would soon be pushed out.
“This is not just in Gashish; it will cover the entire state. We will not allow anybody to take over another person’s property,” he declared.
He advised the illegal occupants of the houses to vacate them, saying that government would restore peace and resettle displaced persons to their original places.
He however, implored the people to learn to live in peace with one another, saying that government’s efforts would amount to nothing if the people would not embrace peace.
Lalong appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari, through the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for granting approval for the establishment of the mobile police squadron.
The governor also commended Nigeria Electricity Supply Company (NESCO), for donating the facility that would serve as a temporary abode for the take-off of the police squadron.
According to him, government will immediately start the renovation of the structures provided by NESCO to enable the prompt take-off of the Police outfit.
He equally commended the community for donating 75 rooms that would be used on temporary basis.
Mr Dickson Chollom, Chairman, Barkin Ladi Local Government, in a remark, appreciated the state government’s commitment towards the restoration of peace in the area.
Mr Bitrus Doro, a community leader, who also spoke, said that the community had been clamouring for the establishment of police mobile barracks in the area for 15 years, and expressed happiness that the dream had come to reality.
He however, appealed to the state government to construct another road to serve as an alternative route in view of the security situation.
“The security situation is compounded by the lack of an alternative road linking the community.
“We appeal to you to construct another road that would serve as an alternative to the one we have,” he said.
Mr Lazarus Bewarang, representative of NESCO, listed the property donated by the company to include a block of four rooms and two sitting rooms, and a large hall with seven rooms.
Others included a building of six rooms, six sitting rooms and six kitchens, a three bedroom flat, club for recreation as well as a Police outpost.

A new research has uncovered novel ways in which marijuana or cannabis affects the developing brain, with the surprising conclusion that using alcohol can damage the brain more than using marijuana.
According to the researchers, alcohol alters the structure of gray and white matter in the brain.
The findings came from a number of studies that featured at the 2018 annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, held in San Diego, CA, according to a report by Medical News Today.
The findings reveal, for instance, that exposure to marijuana before birth and during teen years can affect the developing brain in several ways.
Some of these ways disrupt communication between different parts of the brain, while others interfere with learning and memory and disrupt levels of chemical messengers and metabolic compounds.
However, exposure to a compound present in marijuana can improve memory in Alzheimer’s disease and even reduce some of its symptoms.
Among the hundreds of compounds in the marijuana, or cannabis, plant are more than 100 called cannabinoids that can alter the release of messenger chemicals in the brain and nervous system.
In the United States, cannabis is the “most popular illicit drug.”
A nationwide survey revealed that 22.2 million people aged 12 and older said that they had used cannabis in the past month.
Also, the percentage in this age group who reported having used the substance during the past month has risen steadily from 6.2 to 8.3 percent in 2002–2015.
More and more people are now using cannabis not only as a recreational drug but also medicinally, such as to help alleviate the pain and symptoms of multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and other long-term conditions.
The increase in cannabis use — together with the relaxation of legislation by many states — is not, however, matched by an increase in conclusive evidence on its long-term benefits and harms.
The six studies unveiled at the recent meeting shed some much-needed new light on the long-term effects of cannabis use over the lifespan. Specifically, they found that:
*Exposing unborn rats to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a psychoactive compound of cannabis, reduced their resilience to stress in later life.
Such exposure also led to faulty development of brain circuits for memory and learning, which the scientists observed when the animals reached adolescence.
*Adolescent rats that used cannabinoids showed enhanced activity in brain circuits that regulate the formation of habits.
*Cannabinoid use by adolescent rats also showed physical alterations in the development of brain regions involved in self-control, making decisions, and planning.
*In adult mice, the long-term use of cannabinoids led to changes in connectivity and metabolism in regions of the brain involved in memory and learning.
*Mice with Alzheimer’s disease showed memory improvements and lost fewer brain cells when scientists treated them with THC.
This could lead to a therapy for the human disease.
From these and other studies, the evidence suggests that cannabis can do long-term harm to the unborn; and yet, among pregnant women, it is the most popular illegal drug.
Experimenting with marijuana often starts in adolescence, at a time when the developing brain is still vulnerable.
The new studies confirm that cannabis use may have some medical benefits in specific situations, noted press conference presider Dr. Michael Taffe, who researches substance abuse therapy at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA.
However, he cautioned that the studies also underscore the vital need for “a better understanding of the negative aspects as well, particularly for pregnant women, teens, and chronic users.”
