The Ijaw Youth Council stated that the refusal of the federal government to prosecute those responsible for disseminating hate against the Igbos was only emboldening them.

The group insinuated that there was a ploy to massacre southerners, considering the fact that the government had refused to apprehend those responsible for the quit notice and the anti-Igbo song.

It warned that the country may not be able to survive any inter-regional or inter-ethnic killings considering its fragile state Niger Delta group the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), has fired off a warning that they would give a “commensurate response” if any southerners are harmed in the north.

According to reports, the warning was issued in a statement signed by Eric Omare, the factional chairman of the group, who faulted the security agencies over their failure to arrest those responsible for the anti-Igbo hate song which has been circulating.

NAIJ.com notes that the group also expressed anger that the individuals who issued the quit notice to Igbos living in the north, have not been arrested.

The statement read: “The news of a song calling for the killing of Igbo in the north has been reported by several newspapers; however it is sad to note that the government and security agencies have failed to act.

“The deliberate refusal of the government and security agencies to take action against several conducts by northern elements which threaten national security is emboldening these persons to continue in their conducts.

“It is very unfortunate that security agencies that would invite reputable Nigerians of southern extraction even for comments they know nothing about would turn a deaf ear to issues that threatens the survival of the country by northern elements.

“The hate song circulating in the north is more worrisome considering the insistence by northern youths that Igbo should quit the north by October 1, 2017.

“The coalition of northern youths October 1, 2017 quit notice coupled with the hate song and the deliberate refusal of the Hausa/Fulani led federal government to act clearly indicate that some elements in the north have made up their minds to massacre southerners living in the north.

“This is highly condemnable and unacceptable. “The IYC calls on southerners living in the north to be vigilant in the days ahead and warn that any attack on southerners in the north will be visited with commensurate response from southerners.

“The federal government must know that considering the fragile state of the nation, Nigeria may not be able to survive any inter-regional or inter-ethnic killings.”

A female road sweeper with the Lagos state government on Tuesday morning has uncovered a kidnappers’ den under a covert at Ijaiye area, along old Abeokuta-Lagos expressway.

The middle-age woman identified as Mrs Munirat Aduke said she had resumed to start her daily sweeping routine when she heard the low voice of a woman calling for help from inside the gutter around 9 a.m.

She said upon rushing to the direction where the voice was coming from, she discovered that it was from the gutter.

“As I pepped into the gutter to see what was amiss, I saw about four people; then, a male voice this time around asked me not to come near them. I quickly rushed to call some policemen stationed in a bank, adjacent the gutter.

When the policemen came, they attempted to rescue those who were there but there was strong resistance from one of the men who was throwing stone at them."

Mob gathered tyres in an attempt to burn one of the kidnappers arrested
She said the policemen called for reinforcement when they realised it has gone beyond their power.
“When more policemen joined them, one of the victims, a woman was rescued while another man, one of the kidnappers was brought out.”

He made the announcement on Tuesday when members of the Edo State Exporters Cluster, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Benin City.
The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has announced plans by his administration to set up Export Processing Zones in the state.
He made the announcement on Tuesday when members of the Edo State Exporters Cluster, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Benin City.

Obaseki decried the dominance of import trade in the nation’s economy and said that considering the low prices of crude oil in the international market, more investments should be in the non-oil sector.

He said: “We promised to create 200,000 jobs and the jobs will come from the private sector. We are investing in infrastructure, especially electricity and we plan to locate industrial parks where business clusters would thrive.

Our goal is to be an enabler for businesses to thrive and not invest in business ventures.”
The governor assured the group that his administration would give them land where products such as cassava and yam would be processed for export and commended the well packaged products made by the cluster members.

Obaseki added that the planned Edo State Business Bureau would be situated close to the NEPC, and would provide business information as well as fast-track business transactions in the state.

Earlier, the Edo Sate coordinator of the group, Josephine Peters, said their visit was to solicit the state government’s support in the promotion of export business.

Peters further said the association was established by the Benin Zonal Office of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, in 2014, to identify and encourage value addition to products from the non-oil sector in the state for export purposes.

Oluwasegun Oyebanji, the Vice Chairman of Nigeria Union in the province, told the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone that more than 20 Nigerians affected in the incident in the area were facing hard times.
Some Nigerians affected in the February xenophobic attacks in Limpopo Province of South Africa have called on the Federal Government to assist them.
Oluwasegun Oyebanji, the Vice Chairman of Nigeria Union in the province, told the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone that more than 20 Nigerians affected in the incident in the area were facing hard times.

Oyebanji said: “The affected victims in the province are suffering.
“A woman whose husband was killed during the attack is now left with four children. The late husband was the bread winner of the family. It has not been easy for her.

“Another Nigerian whose skin was scarred is just recovering from the wounds inflicted on him and he needs urgent help.
“We need assistance from the government.”
He said a Nigeria-based priest had visited some victims and had given them cash for their upkeep.

Oyebanji also accused some officials of the consulate of neglecting the victims, saying those who visited them after the attack hurriedly left.
According to him, the consulate officials did not wait to listen to the problems of the victims, especially those who lost their passports.

He said: “As we speak, Nigerians who lost their passports have not been given new ones and they urgently need it to restart life.
“We appeal to the government to call the consulate officials to order.
“They should wake up to their responsibilities and ensure that the welfare of Nigerians is given priority attention.”

But responding to the issues raised by the union, Godwin Adama, the Consul General in South Africa, said the mission had visited the province twice since the attack.

Adama said: “Following the attack on some Nigerians in the province, we moved in immediately, met with the victims, extended welfare support to the wife of the Nigerian killed and also met with the South African police.”
Adama also said the mission facilitated the visit of a Nigerian pastor to the victims after the incident.

He said that based on the mission`s advice, Nigerians in the province had initiated a mechanism aimed at flushing out criminals in their midst and checking the frequent attacks by South Africans.
He said: “As we speak, the mission has not received any conflicting views or incidents from the area since we intervened.”
