Governor Ibikunle Amosun

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has described data presented by the Federal Ministry of Finance, National Bureau of Statistics and the Federal Inland Revenue Service as regards the contributions of the state to the Value Added Tax as a misrepresentation.

Amosun said the claim that Lagos State contributes more than Ogun State cannot be true as Ogun State has the highest number of industries in the country.

The governor, who was speaking during a facility tour of an indigenous armoured vehicles manufacturing company, situated in Ode-Remo area of the state, faulted the presentation by the agencies that out of 916 high net worth individuals paying tax to the federal purse, only two are from Ogun State.

“Not less than 27 high net worth individuals in the state pay at least N20 million monthly as tax to the federal purse,” he said, urging the agencies to cross check their data.

The governor added that such inaccurate statistics is unacceptable, especially if foreign agencies like the World Bank could come and do accurate statistics about the state.

Amosun also frowned at companies that manufacture products in the state, but inscribed “Made in Lagos” on them just because they have their head offices in Lagos and said such practices must stop henceforth.

He also said the state would immediately make order for the purchase of three Armoured Personnel Carriers and three gun boats from the company to further step up security in the state.

According to him, the APCs will be distributed across the three Senatorial Districts of the state, while the gun boats will be placed in the riverine and 7 waterways areas of the state.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has threatened to sanction any Deposit Money Bank (DMB) in breach of its earlier directive to open teller points for retail forex transactions and to have electronic display boards in all their branches, showing rates of all trading currencies.

Meanwhile, the naira, yesterday appreciated to N359.06 per dollar in the Investors and Exports (I&E) Foreign Exchange, forex Window.

Data from the Financial Market Dealers Quote, FMDQ showed that the indicative exchange rate for the I & E Window, known as Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange, NAFEX rose to N359.06 per dollar, yesterday, from N360.25 per dollar last week Friday. Hence the naira has appreciated by N1.19 per dollar.

Meanwhile, the volume of dollars traded in the same window dropped to $131.84 million from $154 million last week Thursday.

Specifically, the CBN in a circular warned that it would mete out stiff regulatory sanctions to banks that fail to comply fully with the directive by October 13, 2017.

The circular signed by the Director, Banking Supervision, Ahmad Abdullahi, stressed that the Bank would bar erring DMBs from all future CBN foreign exchange interventions.

The CBN had in March 2017 directed banks and authorized dealers to open a teller point for retail FX transactions (PTA/BTA and SME) including buying and selling, in all locations in order to ensure access to foreign exchange by their customers and other users, without any hindrance.

That circular also directed banks to install electronic display boards in all their branches, showing rates of all trading currencies, which it urged customers to insist on in processing their foreign exchange transactions for invisibles and the SMEs window.

Meanwhile, the apex bank has sustained its intervention in the various sectors of the inter-bank Foreign Exchange market with the injection of $545 million.

Giving a breakdown of the Bank’s latest forex injection, its Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, revealed that the retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) received the largest intervention of $285 million.

Other components of the released figures include the $100 million offered for wholesale SMIS, $90 million for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) window and $70 million for invisibles such a such as Basic Travel Allowances, tuition fees and medical payments.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into why two people literally tried to cram about 100,000 euros ($120,000) in 500 euro notes down the toilets.

The incident happened in Switzerland, precisely in three Geneva restaurants and an office of banking giant, UBS.

The notes “had probably been cut with scissors,” Geneva prosecution spokesman Vincent Derouand told AFP, confirming the May incident first reported by the Tribune de Geneve newspaper.

Derouand said the investigation would first focus on whether the cash was connected to any illegal activity because destroying — or attempting to flush — bank notes is not a crime in Switzerland.

Police were alerted to the case after the restaurants complained that their toilets had been clogged, the spokesman said.

Later, “a lawyer representing the people who flushed the notes came by and compensated them” for the cost of plumbing repairs, Derouand said.

The UBS branch involved is in central Geneva and hosts a wealth management office of Switzerland’s largest bank, Geneva prosecutors said.

Notes were discovered in toilets near the area where the bank has vaults, Derouand said.

UBS declined to comment on the story.

Derouand did not discuss the identity of the suspects, but the paper said they were two Spanish women who had stashed the money in a safe. (AFP)

Spain on Monday ordered North Korea’s ambassador to leave the country by September 30 in protest over Pyongyang’s nuclear tests, which it has criticised as “a serious threat to peace”.

“Today, the ambassador of North Korea DPRK in Spain has been declared persona non grata,” the foreign ministry said on its English twitter account. The ministry added on its Spanish account that the ambassador has until the end of the month to leave the country.

In late August, Spain had warned that Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes “create a serious threat to peace in the region and to global security,” saying they “would have consequences on bilateral relations”.

The ambassador was also summoned to Madrid at the time and told to reduce the number of diplomatic staff, which include an ambassador and two diplomats, according to a foreign ministry spokeswoman.

North Korea — the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) — has repeatedly conducted missile launches in recent months, despite being barred from doing so under United Nations rules.

It carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test earlier this month, and fired a long-range ballistic missile over Japan that landed in the Pacific.

It prompted renewed sanctions from the UN Security Council, which is scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss the matter during the annual General Assembly gathering of world leaders at the United Nations.

This latest move by Spain followed decisions from both Peru and Mexico to expel the North Korean ambassador on their territory.

Danny Welbeck will undergo a definitive scan on his injured groin today amid fears he could miss the next four weeks.

The Arsenal forward is emerging as a doubt for Arsenal’s next four fixtures and England’s forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against and Lithuania after limping off during the second half of Sunday’s draw at Chelsea.

Welbeck underwent preliminary scans on Monday and will be assessed further today.

The forward was in considerable pain after the game, but the injury is not said to be serious although Arsenal will not risk Welbeck’s fitness by rushing him back.

Nevertheless, initial fears are that Welbeck will not feature for Arsenal again until after the international break meaning he is set to miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Doncaster, the Premier League games against West Brom and Brighton as well as next week’s Europa League visit to BATE Borisov.

How Welbeck recovers during the international break will determine whether the forward will be ready for the visit to Watford on October 14.

Arsenal are unlikely to take any chances with Welbeck’s recovery given his history of injury problems.

The forward’s career has suffered because of injuries but those concerns finally looked to be behind him after his promising start to the season. Arsene Wenger is not short of attacking options.

Nevertheless, the news comes as a blow to the Arsenal manager, who has selected Welbeck in his starting XI for all five of the club’s Premier League games this season.

And Welbeck has repaid his manager’s faith, scoring three goals – making him the Gunners’ leading goalscorer this season.

The injury also comes as a blow to England boss Gareth Southgate as he looks to clinch World Cup qualification next month.

Welbeck made his return to the squad for the games against Malta and Slovakia earlier this month, playing in both games and scoring against the Maltese.

Welbeck’s return to the international fold after a long term injury absence arrived as a huge boost to Southgate, who has identified the former Manchester United star as a key member of his squad.

But it is now likely the England boss will head into the forthcoming double-header without Welbeck.

After more than 60 years of land disputes between the people of Iyamitit in Adun and Ababene in Okum, Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State, the people have at last agreed to sheathe their swords.

The dispute which emanated from the ownership of a parcel of land at the border of the communities has lasted since 1957 and has led to loss of lives, destruction of property and crops.

Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Haffiz Mohammed, who brokered peace between the communities, told NDV in Calabar: ”The issue of Iyamitit and Ababene, which have disagreed for over 60 years has been resolved.

I invited them to my office, we sat together and talked and they are now living in peace.” Hafiz said: “War is not settled in the battle field.

I also invited the leaders of Ediba and Usumutong communities in Abi Local Government Area of the state, who have been fighting for over a decade now for a peace talk.

We will go to Abi to resolve the Ediba and Usumutong crisis. “From there, I will move to Boki where there is a similar problem. We do not believe in using guns to bring peace, but we will continue talking to them to see the need of living peacefully together.”

While commending journalists and traditional rulers for their role in the fight to curb kidnapping and cultism in the state, he said: ”Cultism is one area that is giving security agencies serious concern in Cross River State, but we have dealt with cult related issues substantially and have arrested so many of them who are standing trials now in court.
