The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) has condemned “in no uncertain terms” the demolition of Fresh FM105.9 by the Oyo State Government.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mr John Momoh (OON), on Wednesday, BON said the station was pulled down and journalists thrown into the job market notwithstanding the fact that a case of alleged breach of the Oyo State Town Planning was before a court of competent jurisdiction.

“As an umbrella body of broadcast stations in the country, we find this action not only oppressive and high handed but a demonstration of flagrant muzzling of the media and press freedom which must be condemned by all civilized minds,” the statement read in part.

The partial demolition of the station, which is owned by music artiste Yinka Ayefele, on Sunday has been widely criticised.

The management of the station has also rejected the claim of the state government that the building contravened state laws.

In its reaction to the demolition, BON declared support for Mr Ayefele and called on the media in Nigeria and globally as well as all people of goodwill to condemn the action of the Oyo State government.

“BON stands with the Management and staff of Fresh FM and will support the proprietor of the station, Mr. Yinka Ayefele in demanding compensation from the State Government through any legitimate means necessary,” it said.

“The era of reckless assault on the media, especially by a democratically elected government is over and must be resisted wherever it rears its head.”

IS Leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi

The wanted leader of the Islamic State jihadist group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi called on Muslims to wage “jihad” in a purported new audio recording released on Wednesday.
The Telegram message on the occasion of Eid al-Adha is the first known to be released since another was broadcast in September last year, and comes as IS has lost most of its territory in Iraq and Syria.
“Those who forget their religion, patience, jihad against their enemies, and their certainty in the creator’s promise lose and are disgraced,” the leader said.
“But when they hold on to it, they are mighty and victorious, even if after a certain time.”
Baghdadi has been pronounced dead on several occasions, but an Iraqi intelligence official said in May that he remains alive in Syrian territory by the Iraqi border.
Baghdadi was said to move around with only a small group of followers.
Originally from Iraq, Baghdadi has been dubbed the “most wanted man on the planet” and the United States is offering a $25 million reward for his capture.
The Iraqi official said the noose was closing around the jihadist leader after Iraqi forces captured five top IS commanders in an unprecedented raid in Syria on March 24.
In September 2017, in the last voice message attributed to Baghdadi, the IS leader called on his fighters in Syria and Iraq to “resist” their enemies.
IS overran large swathes of Syria and neighbouring Iraq in 2014, proclaiming a “caliphate” in areas they controlled.
But they have since lost most of that to various offensives in both countries. LR News

Buhari urges Nigerians to emulate two Nigerians who returned a bag with dollars to the American returnee

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked Nigerians to emulate two security men who returned a handbag filled with valuables, including dollars, forgotten at the Murtala Muhammed Airport by an American returnee.
He said such conduct reflects the new Nigeria that we all desire.
A Lagos-based medical doctor, Banji Oyegbami, who runs Betta Hospital in Agege, had met a family returning from America at the airport on August 18. In the process of loading their luggage into his car, the handbag of the returnee’s wife fell, unknown to anyone.
It was not until 90 minutes later that an officer of Halogen Securities, on duty at the airport, called the couple, to come for the retrieved bag.
When the bag was eventually collected, the contents, including a handsome amount of American dollars, phone, wrist watch, and other valuables were intact. The grateful couple offered a generous gift, but Messrs Francis Emepueaku and Achi Daniel, declined, saying they were merely doing their duties.
President Buhari said that despite the scoffing of a minority number, Nigeria is resolutely on the road to a new dawn.
Dr. Banji Oyegbami of Betta Hospital Agege, reported the story of honesty by 2 men working for Halogen Securities
“Honesty remains the best policy. We must exhibit such behaviour in whatever position we find ourselves, whether high or low,” he submits.
“The security men could have chosen to behave differently, following the self-serving principle of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them.’ But they have chosen to be examples of good, honest Nigerians. I commend their conduct to the rest of the country.”
The President urged Nigerians to bring out the best in themselves at all times, noting that with such minds, they can never be hoodwinked again by those who seek power for selfish and dubious reasons, and return the country to an inglorious past.
“Nigeria will no longer be a byword for corruption and plundering of public resources. That is the path we have chosen to take, and our country will eventually get to a new shore,” President Buhari affirmed.
Read Dr. Oyegbami’s post that triggered President Buhari’s Reaction:
ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST. NIGERIA IS STILL BLESSED WITH SOME HONEST PEOPLE… A True Life Story
I am Dr Banji Oyegbami, a Medical practitioner in Lagos. The following story is my practical experience at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos yesterday night 18th August 2018.
As planned I went to the Airport with my driver to pick up my very close friend and his wife that arrived from Atlanta USA on board Delta Airline.
I parked my car on the first floor of the New Multi level car park and walked briskly to wait for my guests in front of the Arrival hall. About an hour of waiting my friend and wife emerged from the entrance pushing the luggage trolley. I rushed forward to meet them and as expected exchanged pleasantries. My driver immediately took over the trolley and we walk briskly to the car park chatting all along the way. We got there and started loading the bags into the boot of the vehicle. Instinctively Madam dropped her handbag on the floor while trying to help the driver with the loading. Loading done. the 4 of us jumped into the car and drove out of the Airport. But my friend’s wife forgot to pick her handbag.
We journeyed for about one and a half hour in terrible traffic without realizing this.
We were jolted when I received a phone call from the daughter of my friend
in America. She told us that she received a call via her mother’s number. The caller informed her that the owner of the phone forgot her bag at the Airport car park, and that we should turn back to collect it.
It was only then that my friend’s wife realized that her bag was missing. To confirm the information, I called the missing phone and it was picked. The receiver confirmed that the bag is with him. He gave his name as Mr Francis and that he is the supervisor of the park.
We headed back to the Airport with speed and shortly we met Mr Francis who after confirming madam’s identity narrated the story.
A junior officer of Halogen Securities Mr Achi Daniel found the bag and gave it to his supervisor as lost and found item.
Mr Francis scrolled through the phone in the lost bag and called my friend’s daughter in USA who called me to relay the message.
Mr Francis Emepueaku told us that they had gone through the bag and logged every item therein.
My friend’s wife who was very tensed was asked to relax and verify that nothing was missing. She did and confirmed that the items were complete. The log book was presented to her to sign which she did after thorough cross checking.
The lost and found bag contained her Phone, large sum of Dollars in labeled envelops sent through her to people in Nigeria, wrist watches she planned as gift items and other documents and valuables.
We were speechless when Mr Francis refused the tip we offered him saying that they were only doing their duty.
I was really surprised at the level of honesty and integrity displayed by Mr Francis and Mr Achi Daniel both of Halogen Securities and I think they should be commended.
Kindly broadcast this message to all your contacts. Nigeria is not devoid of honest men and women as exemplified by Mr Francis and Mr Achi.
THUMBS UP FOR HALOGEN SECURITIES. THUMBS UP FOR MR FRANCIS EMEPUEAKU AND MR ACHI DANIEL

Social media giants Facebook and Twitter announced that they were removing accounts, groups and pages suspected of spreading fake news, with some of them sponsored by foreign agencies.
Facebook said it removed 652 fake accounts. Some of these displayed “coordinated inauthentic behaviour that originated in Iran and targeted people across multiple internet services in the Middle East, Latin America, UK and U.S.,” it said.
The U.S. tech giant received a tip in July from cybersecurity firm FireEye about Liberty Front Press, which describes itself as a network of independent media organisations.
An investigation found the network was linked to Iranian state media and one component, Quest 4 Truth, had ties with Press TV, an English-language news network affiliated with Iranian state media, Facebook said. It noted that the Iranian media increased posting contents about Britain and the U.S. from 2017.
Facebook said it is cooperating with U.S. law enforcement authorities to continue the probe into these activities.
This is the second time in less than a month that Facebook announced it was removing some foreign-sponsored accounts for “coordinated inauthentic behaviour” across its platforms, including its photo-sharing service Instagram.
Only July 31, Facebook said it deleted 32 pages and accounts that aimed to exert political influence through fake information ahead of the upcoming U.S. mid-term elections.
Twitter also announced it has taken down accounts originating from Iran. “Working with our industry peers today, we have suspended 284 accounts from Twitter for engaging in coordinated manipulation. Based on our existing analysis, it appears many of these accounts originated from Iran,” Twitter said in a post Tuesday.
It also said it is engaging with other companies and law enforcement units to proceed with investigations into fake accounts.
U.S. social media networks have been under heavy scrutiny recently as federal regulators are concerned about “media manipulation” by foreign countries ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
There is growing tension between the U.S. and Iran after Washington announced on Aug. 6 it would reimpose the economic sanctions against Tehran that were lifted under a 2015 nuclear accord.
The sanctions follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision in May to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal reached between Tehran and the five UN Security Council members plus Germany and the European Union.

Edo has earned bad reputation as the state with highest number of human trafficking, recording more than 3,883 Libya returnees since November 2017.
Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, the Chairman of the state Task Force Against Human trafficking and Illegal Migration, regretted on Tuesday that the scourge had given the state a bad name.
At an advocacy programme at Abudu, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo, she said the governor was worried that more than half of Nigerian returnees from Libya were from Edo while Orhionmwon Council Area takes the lead in the state.
“Human trafficking is a bad business. Don’t involve or allow yourself to be trafficked by those looking for young men and women to be exploited.
“We are informing you so that you won’t learn the hard way. Many others who have gone and returned are gnashing their teeth now.
“Our children undergo slavery there. We have records of thousands of Nigerians who were killed or missing in the Sahara Desert, Libya or Mediterranean Sea.
“But the traffickers don’t tell you the hard life your children undergo there; how they are kidnapped in connivance with them and parents and other relations end up sending money from here to Libya.
“They only tell you their success stories that are not true. Beware of the antics of the traffickers,” she said.
The government, he said, was committed to tackling the menace through the creation of jobs across the state.
Omorogbe, who is also the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, said government was committed to addressing human trafficking.
Omorogbe, however, advised the people to report anyone who attempts to woo them to the task force for investigation and subsequent prosecution.
The Commissioner for Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs, Mr Osaze Osemwegie-Ero, who was also at the advocacy programme, commended the administration’s commitment to tackling human trafficking.
He said the state’s governor was working round the clock to change the narrative by investing massively in human capital development.
On his part, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Anti Human Trafficking Issues, Mr Solomon Okoduwa, said the taskforce would sustain the advocacy.
Okoduwa called on parents, religious bodies as well as the international community to partner Edo in the fight against human trafficking and illegal migration.
“We have over 4,000 Libya returnees as I speak, but we are saying this must not be allowed to continue.
“What we are saying is that the government cannot do it all alone; we are appealing to religious leaders and the traditional institution to help mount vigorous campaign against this menace,’’ he said. LR News
