Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, has again stated that  Nigerians must move on together as breakup was not an option.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Media Aide, Paul Mumeh, the former Senate’s President insisted that “the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable”.

Senator Mark, stated these when he led members of the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) 3rd Regular Course Alumni Association on a courtesy visit to the Kaduna State Acting governor,  Alhaji Aminu Shagali, in Kaduna on Friday, to mark the Golden Jubilee ( 50 years) of their entry into the NDA.

“Those who are agitating for otherwise are missing the point. Nigeria has crossed many crucibles.

“We cannot reverse ourselves. The only option is to move on in a manner that is progressive, peaceful and united.

“We may have our disagreements. But a breakup is not an option. We can resolve our differences through meaningful dialogue and genuine conversation.
“There is no use heating up the polity,” he said.

He noted that no matter the imperfections, the nation is greater and better as an indivisible country.

He recalled that he and his course mates were admitted into the NDA in September 1967 saying that they were admitted with a mission to “protect and defend the territorial integrity of our nation.

“We were bonded together by patriotism to keep Nigeria one.

“It is a sweet memory and a reunion to gather in Kaduna once again,” he said.

King Sunny Ade

King Sunny Ade, sometimes also called the Minister of Enjoyment, was born in Oshogbo, Nigeria in 1946, the son of a Methodist minister.

He began his musical career when, after dropping out of grammer school, he drifted to Lagos and joined a highlife band.

Inspired by the music of I.K. Dairo, he joined the Rhythm Dandies, led by Moses Olaiya (later known as Baba Sala, Nigeria's preeminent funny man and a prolific film maker).

King Sunny was influenced by the legendary Tunde Nightingale (early Juju pioneer extraordinare) and borrowed stylistic elements from Nightingale's 'So wa mbe' style of juju.

In 1966 he formed his own band, the Green Spots. After a long eight years in which they recorded 12 LPs for the Nigeria-Africa Song label, in 1974 he entered into increasingly annoying contract hassles and a public court case.

This experience prompted him into forming his own recording company linked to Decca Records. At this time he changed the name of his band to the African Beats.

King Sunny Ade and The African Beats tour with the typically large African line-up of 20-30 members.

They play a spacey, jamming sort of Juju, characterized by tight vocal harmonies, intricate guitar work, backed by traditional talking drums, percussion instruments, and even adding the unusual pedal steel guitar and accordian.

L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, the world’s richest woman whose old age was clouded by dementia, has died at the age of 94, her family said Thursday.

“Liliane Bettencourt died last night at home,” her daughter Francoise Bettencourt Meyers said in a statement. “My mother left peacefully.”

Bettencourt, the cosmetics giant’s principal shareholder, was the 14th richest person in the world, according to Forbes magazine, which estimated her net worth in March at $39.5 billion (33 billion euros).

She was rarely seen in public since leaving the L’Oreal board in 2012, but her name remained in the headlines as members of her entourage were charged with exploiting her failing mental health.

Bettencourt had been declared unfit to run her own affairs in 2011 after a medical report showing she had suffered from “mixed dementia” and “moderately severe” Alzheimer’s disease since 2006.

The complex legal case involved a bitter feud with her only daughter and unscrupulous friends, and even dragged in former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Patrice de Maistre, who managed Bettencourt’s vast fortune, was accused of getting her to hand over envelopes of cash to members of Sarkozy’s right-wing UMP party during his 2007 presidential campaign.

The charges against Sarkozy were dropped in October 2013 due to lack of evidence.

The Northern Elders Forum has called on the Federal Government to investigate recent reports of importation of arms into the country and prosecute persons behind it.

The Leader of the forum, Dr. Paul Unongo, made the call at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.
Unongo said there was the need for all stakeholders to be more vigilant to checkmate the trend.

He said: “The alarming reports of illegal importation of huge quantities of arms into the country is disconcerting to the NEF.

“All governments and citizens must be more vigilant, firm and decisive in dealing with national security challenges.

“All governments from local, state and Federal must protect Nigerians.”
Unongo commended northern leaders, represented by its 19 state governors and senators, for their restrained and matured responses in spite of provocations.

He said that ongoing agitation in parts of the country triggered the provocations and that it was the responsibility of governments across the world to protect lives and property of their citizens.

He also commended the Federal Government for its readiness to take necessary measures as permitted in the Constitution to check all threats to the country’s peace and security.

Unongo urged groups in the country to maintain that to bring to justice any group that threatened national security was a sacred duty of government.

He said the forum welcomed the presence of the military and other security personnel in any part of the country where peace and security were threatened.

He said: “The President has the prerogative of deploying the armed forces for the purpose of keeping peace.
“This prerogative should be respected by all Nigerians.”

Unongo, however, welcomed and commended the decision by South East governors to denounce the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its proscription in their respective states.

Unongo called on the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and relevant judicial authorities to continue to uphold the rule of law without fear or favour.

He added that the forum on its part should remain vigilant over the security and welfare of Northerners in the South East, South South and other parts of the country.

According him, the North has been victim of terrorism over the years and recognises the outline of an emerging terrorism now emerging in the South East.

He added that Northern leaders would not sit idle and watch the nation sink into chaos under new and additional threats.

Unongo said it was in this regard that the forum strongly supported the Federal Government’s proclamation and proscription of IPOB and its activities in the country.

He reiterated there were no issues of disagreement and demands by individuals and groups in the country or anywhere in the world that dialogue could not be resolved.

He said: We the citizens of Nigeria are capable of resolving issues internally.

“The North recognises and acknowledges that there are demanding and legitimate questions on the current operations of the Nigerian state.

“The North has very clear ideas on all issues and positions that the nation sees as challenges and is willing to dialogue on all of them.”

British Police on Wednesday arrested two more suspects linked to last Friday’s terrorist attack on the London underground railway.

The Metropolitan Police said counter-terrorism officers detained a 48-year-old man and a 30-year-old man in Newport, Wales, following the arrest of a 25-year-old man in the town.

Two other suspects from the London area, aged 18 and 21, were arrested earlier after a home-made bomb was partially detonated on an underground train at London’s Parsons Green station on Friday.

Officers were continuing to search two properties in Newport and two others in outer London on Wednesday,” the police said.

“This continues to be a fast-moving investigation,’’ Commander Dean Haydon, head of counter-terrorism for the Metropolitan Police,” said in a statement.

“A significant amount of activity has taken place since the attack on Friday.

“We now have five men in custody and searches are continuing at four addresses.
“Detectives are carrying out extensive inquiries to determine the full facts behind the attack.,’’ Haydon said.

About 30 people were injured when a bucket packed with nails and the explosive triacetone triperoxide partially detonated after being left on a busy train during the morning rush hour.
Many of the victims suffered burns.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State extremist group, but the police cautioned that such claims were “routine whether or not they’ve had any previous engagement with the individuals involved”.
