The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Fatai Owoseni on Sunday confirmed the commencement of the counter-terrorism operation to Latest Reality Metro.

He said this is aimed at flushing out herdsmen who are reportedly armed and perpetrating violent attacks in the state.

The Lagos State Prisons Command says  35 inmates of the Ikoyi Prison School, Lagos, are participating in the ongoing January/February  West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates.
The Controller of Prisons, Lagos State Command, Mr Tunde Ladipo disclosed this in an interview with the Latest Reality Metro on Sunday in Lagos.
LR News reports that the examination is newly-introduced by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The ongoing examination is the first in the series.
It is taking place only in major cities and towns.
The examination brings to three, the number of the council’s examinations.
The January/February examination and the August/September diet popularly referred to as November/December diet are for private candidates, while the May/June diet is for candidates in schools.
According to the controller, the authorities of the prison are working hard to ensure that inmates are given education opportunities.
“I am pleased to inform you that the welfare of these inmates are of top priority to us.
“We are not leaving any stone unturned as we are deploying resources available to us in ensuring that these inmates are empowered,” the controller told our correspondents.
He said that the prison authorities  had been giving the inmates the necessary support to enable them to  excel.
“I am sure that, with all the efforts of the government, NGOs and others in an attempt to help them to excel, they will post very impressive performances in this examination.
.“We hope they come out in flying colours so we can get them enrolled into the National Open University of Nigeria where they will be further educated and empowered.
“With that, we have created an opportunity for them to contribute their quotas to nation-building whenever they regain freedom,” Ladipo said.
The Principal of the school, ASP Idris Ibikunle, also hopes that the inmates would excel in the examination.
“I am indeed happy with the way the examination is going. I must say it has been good so far.
“We recently took delivery of a huge volume of books, which cut across all the subjects, from the Federal Government.
“Right now, the prison has entered into a partnership with the Prisoners Rights Advocacy Initiative, an NGO in the area of volunteer teachers.
“Plans are also under way to give the school a deserved upgrade that will ensure a more conducive environment for teaching, learning and conduct of Computer-Based Test (CBT) by JAMB.
” With all these in place, I expect better and brighter days for the education of our inmates,” he told LR News

On Saturday,  the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch, Ignatius Aphrem II, led a prayer service in the damaged St Mary’s church.
According to AFP, the St Mary church still showed signs of the conflict its congregation had experienced: “Stones, strips of wire, papers and remnants of rockets were strewn across the church floor, and bright sunlight streamed in from the blown-out windows.”
The Patriarch said: “It’s an indescribable feeling for us to pray in a nearly-destroyed church, which serves as a consolation for our hearts and a message of hope to the people of the city to come back and take part in building it anew.”
One man, Shadi Tuma, chose to remain in Deir Ezzor: “The hard times that Deir Ezzor went through pushed the families to leave, but there was a determination inside of me to stay in this city,” he told AFP.
“Deir Ezzor will always have coexistence. Christians will always have a presence here.”
Deir Ezzor, North-East of capital Damascus, experienced the rise of Islamic State in 2014.
3000 Christians are estimated to have lived in Deir Ezzor before the 2011 uprising but many fled.
People have gradually started returning as Syrian troops recapture the city, but it is slow progress as living conditions are desirable with destroyed buildings and temperamental access to electricity and water.

Serious crisis is brewing in the Maldives as security forces  on Sunday sealed off the country’s parliament and arrested two opposition lawmakers following attempts by legislators to impeach President Abdulla Yameen.
President Yameen has refused to free jailed politicians.
Soldiers in riot gear surrounded the parliament building in the Maldives capital Male on Sunday soon after the opposition petitioned the parliament to remove the island nation’s attorney general and its chief prosecutor.
They accuse the pair of breaking the law by failing to act on a Supreme Court verdict overturning “terrorism” convictions against nine dissidents, including exiled former President Mohamed Nasheed.
The top court’s ruling has plunged the Maldives into fresh political turmoil and dealt a major blow to Yameen, who is accused of corruption, misrule and rights abuses. He denies the allegations.
The verdict also gave the opposition a majority in the 85-member parliament as it reinstated 12 members of parliament who were stripped of their seats last year.
But two of the 12 were arrested at the airport on Sunday, shortly after they returned to the Maldives after months in exile.
Abdulla Sinan and Ilham Ahmed were detained on charges of bribery, a police spokesman told Al Jazeera.
Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, parliamentary leader of the opposition, condemned their arrest in a statement.
“We call on the police to release the MPs immediately, and to stop following unlawful order, to stop obstructing the lawful mandate of parliamentarians,” he said.
“In a desperate attempt to cling onto power, President Yameen has illegally overrun the state: his Attorney General has illegally assumed the powers of the apex court, while the military has overrun the legislature,” he added.
The motion to remove Attorney General Mohamed Anil came hours after he accused the Supreme Court of trying to impeach the president.
“I have informed all law enforcement agencies they must not obey such an illegal order,” he said in a televised appearance flanked by the chiefs of army and the police.
Ahmed Shiyam, the barmy chief, said the security forces would follow Anil’s advice and “will not wait and watch as the Maldives descends into crisis”.
Later, in a ceremony broadcast live on state TV, Shiyam led soldiers and police officers in reciting their oath at the military headquarters in Male.
Meanwhile, the official who heads the parliament secretariat has also resigned.
“I have stepped down,” Ahmed Mohamed told Al Jazeera, without offering further details.
Following the ruling, Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, a Yameen ally, called off the opening of the parliament, scheduled for February 5.
In a text message to lawmakers, he cited unspecified “security concerns” for the cancellation.
Nasheed, speaking to a private television channel from neighbouring Sri Lanka on Sunday, called for protests and urged rank-and-file members of the security forces to arrest the attorney general as well as the chiefs of the army and police.
Anil’s statements were “tantamount to a coup,” the former president said in a post on Twitter.
The United Nations, European Union, and several foreign governments including India, US and UK, have welcomed the Supreme Court’s latest ruling, and urged Yameen to comply with it.

Pope Francis

Pope Francis has invited Roman Catholics, all Christians and members of other religions to observe Feb. 23 as a day of prayer, fasting and initiatives for peace.
Francis while addressing tens of thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square for his weekly blessing,  on Sunday urged everyone to ‘say no’ to violence and conflict.
According to him, the appeal is  because of the “tragic prolonging” of conflicts around the world.
Feb. 23 is a Friday in the first full week of the Christian season of Lent, during which fasting from food and extra acts of charity are encouraged as a sign of penitence.
He said “everyone, in their own consciences, before God, should ask ‘what can I do for peace?’”
“Surely, we can pray but not only: each one of us can say ‘no’ to violence in their own way, because victories obtained through violence are false victories, while working for peace benefits all,” he said.
He specifically invited non-Catholics and non-Christians to join the initiative in any way they saw fit, “but all together”.
Francis said the prayers and fasting should be offered in a particular way for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
South Sudan has been hit by a prolonged civil war and humanitarian crisis. The Democratic Republic of Congo has been hit by unrest this month following the shooting of protesting pro-democracy churchgoers opposed to President Joseph Kabila.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, says the Federal Government has concluded plans to roll-out nationwide screening for most common types of cancers.
The minister via a statement issued by Mrs Boade Akinola, Director Media and Public Relations of the ministry on Sunday in Abuja, also said individuals have roles to play to check the ailment.
Adewole spoke at a ceremony to mark the 2018 World Cancer Day. The ceremony was tagged “We can, I can.”
The NAN reports that World Cancer Day is celebrated on the Feb.4, every year.
According to the minister, the screening will be on the most common types of cancers, such as breast and cervical in women and prostate cancer among men.
He stated that this year’s theme was geared towards exploring individual and collective drive in reducing the global burden of cancer.
Adewole said that individuals could play their role in fighting cancer through healthy lifestyle choices by engaging in weekly physical activities for at least two and half hours for adult, and an hour for children.
He said other lifestyle modifications included avoiding tobacco smoking and eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol intake and staying safe under the sun.
Adewole also emphasised that high index of suspicion for early symptoms and signs of cancer were important, because finding cancer early makes it easier to treat and cure.
The minister appealed to communities to dispel myths and misconceptions that led to stigma and discrimination against people living with the disease.
Adewole said that the commissioning of a new radiotherapy machine at National Hospital Abuja, recently, would provide easy access to radiation treatment for Nigerians.
He added that additional new machine was donated by SHELL Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) and would be in operational at National Hospital Abuja, in the next few months.
He added that the facility at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) would be offering full and uninterrupted services from June 2018.
“In spite of the numerous interventions by the government and other partners, some factors are militating against efforts to effectively combat the scourge of cancer in Nigeria.
“The key barriers to treatment of cancer in Nigeria, are: poor awareness, poor health seeking behaviour, low level of non-governmental investments, low number of skilled health care personnel, funding gaps, amongst others,’’ Adewole said.
Adewole said that government was committed to the development of the Public Private Partnership strategies to address the funding gaps and manpower shortages to surmount these barriers.
