Ekanem was shot dead by the policeman at his hometown, Nkek, in Ukanafun Local Government Area of the state on Saturday, while he was on errand using his mother’s motorcycle.

An eyewitness, Usung Simeon, told our correspondent on Monday that Ekanem was killed by one of the policemen attached to the special squad the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zubairu Muazu, sent to the area to confront recurrent cult activities.

Simeon said the policemen stopped and searched Ekanem but they did not find anything incriminating thing with him. He added that the policemen demanded N100 from him, but his refusal to part with the money led to a policeman killing him.

Simeon said, “He was shot dead after a heated argument with one of the policemen attached to the special squad sent by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zubairu Muazu, to fight recurrent cult activities inur LGA.

“Because the activities of the cultists are always carried out with the use of motorbikes, the police have been conducting stop-and-search operations. So, they just stopped him and subjected him to a search, but nothing was found on him.

“We were surprised that the police demanded for N100 bribe.

“His refusal to part with the money infuriated one of the policemen, who cocked his gun and shot him at close range.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Chukwu Ikechukwu, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, denied that Ekanem was killed by his refusal to give the police N100 bribe.

Ikechukwu said what he first heard was that the deceased was trying to collect the rifle from the policeman, who shot and killed him in self-defence.

“The matter was not about N100 issue, though the police is still investigating the case.

“After our meeting today (Monday), the CP has directed the Area Commander, Ikot Ekpene, to transfer the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Ikot Akpanabia, for thorough investigation,” he said.

He said everything necessary would be done to ensure that justice is served.

A 44-year-old business woman, Alice Ejike, was on Monday arraigned in a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for alleged MMM fraud.

The prosecutor, Florence Avhioboh, told the court that one Sunday Enyi of Karmo village reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station on September 6.

She said the complainant alleged that on July 20, the defendant dubiously and deceitfully convinced him to invest N50,000 into an online banking called MMM.

The complainant said the defendant told him that the money would multiply in a month’s time, knowing that the MMM was no longer ongoing.

Avhioboh said the defendant allegedly collected the money and converted it to her personal use.

“When he went to collect his money as they agreed, she used her children to prevent him from seeing her.”

Avhioboh said during police investigation, the defendant claimed to have deposited the money into the complainant’s MMM account.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 322 and 321 of the Penal Code.

The defendant denied committing the offences, while the judge, Abubakar Sadiq, granted her bail in the sum of N20,000 and a surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned until October 3 for hearing.

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has been scheduled to address the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in the United States on Tuesday, September 19, 2017.

The President of Nigeria is listed as number seven on the provincial list of speakers.

Buhari is expected to speak after the leaders of Brazil, the United States, Guinea, Switzerland, Jordan and Slovakia.

Since his return to Nigeria on August 20, 2017, after 103 days of medical leave in London, Buhari has not attended any public event outside of Aso Villa and his country home in Daura, Katsina State.

Also, he has attended only one Federal Executive Council meeting since he returned three weeks ago.

Acting on the President’s instruction, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo recently visited flood-ravaged Benue State where thousands have been displaced.

Osinbajo, while representing the President, has also received members of the United States Congress as well as the United Kingdom Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and his team at the Villa.

The Vice-President has also presided over every economic meeting including the 15th Annual meeting of the Board of Governors of ECOWAS Bank Investment and the National Industrial Council Meeting which had in attendance Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and many other captains of industry.

However, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed to our correspondent on the telephone that Buhari would attend the UN General Assembly.

Shehu said, “I cannot tell you the time he will be going because it can change but I know he is expected to be the eighth speaker at the UN. So, he will be there and he will speak.”

Sen. Abu Ibrahim

The Senate Committee Chairman on Police Affairs, Senator Abu Ibrahim, on Sunday, lamented the poor funding of the Nigeria Police Force to effectively carry out its mandate of policing the country.

In this regard, Ibrahim vowed to ensure that his committee sponsors a bill for the adequate funding of the force.

The lawmaker noted that it was unacceptable that the police used funds meant for purchasing equipment and welfare of its personnel for special operations.

The senator spoke after an assessment tour of Police formations at the Katari Divisional Police Headquarters, an operational base of ‘Operation Absolute Sanity’ inaugurated by the Inspector-General of Police to flush out kidnappers and other criminal elements along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway.

He was accompanied by the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Agyole Abeh.

Ibrahim described as despicable the low funding of police operations and the general welfare of its personnel, noting that the issue would remain paramount in the upper chamber when it resumes from recess.

The senator, however, urged the operatives to take the fight to the criminals’ dens in the forests, saying that staying only on the highway would amount to embarking on cosmetic operation.

Abeh, the state’s police commissioner said the officers and men of the special forces deployed in the Kaduna-Abuja highway were the best brains in the Police Force. Meanwhile, the police boss told the senator that kidnappers and other criminal elements had empowered some villagers with motorcycles and cell phones to use the residents as informants.

Abeh alleged that those villagers engaged by the criminal elements could go as far as the criminals’ dens in the forests to inform them of security movements.
He added, “While the kidnappers are in the forest, these informants ride bikes to the forest to give them information on the movement of security personnel. Also, when a vehicle breaks down on the road, the informants quickly call them to kidnap the stranded travellers.
“The kidnappers often use the telephones collected from their victims. They also travel very far from the crime spot and their camps to contact the victims’ relatives on the telephone.
“This is making it difficult for us to easily track them down. But even with this, we have arrested a large number of them.”

The task force chairman,  Olayinka Egbeyemi, said that full enforcement of the operations would commence after the expiration of a 48-hour quit notice served on the affected people by the agency.

Egbeyemi said: “All these illegal motorists engaging in commercial activities around Ojuelegba and Ikeja by Ipodo Market, Awolowo Way have been served a ‘Quit Notice’ on Saturday, September 9, 2017 to vacate under the bridges immediately.

“Activities of these illegal motor parks are contributing to the traffic gridlock across the state.
