The lawmaker representing Osun East in the National Assembly, Senator Babajide Omoworare, has pulled out of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election.

Senator Omoworare announced his withdrawal in a statement by the director of communications for his campaign organisation, Tunde Dairo, on Friday in Osogbo, the state capital.

The statement read, “In view of obvious political realities which are beyond our control, Senator Babajide Omoworare will not present his Ward Agents, mobilise his supporters, or deploy resources for the APC Governorship Primary election of July 20th, 2018.

“This development is with the ultimate view of ensuring party cohesion and for All Progressives Congress to secure victory at the September 22nd Governorship election in the state.”

The APC primary election is taking place in the 332 wards across all the local government areas of the state.

The election is conducted by a committee led by Zamfara State Governor, Abdul’Aziz Yari, and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as one of its members.

The committee was set up by the APC national leadership to ensure a free and fair primary that would be accepted by party members in the state.

Following the withdrawal of the three aspirants, 14 candidates will now battle for the APC ticket in a bid to succeed Rauf Aregbesola, should the party win the September 22 governorship election.

The Presidency on Friday took a swipe at some leaders who recently faulted President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration’s way of handling the nation’s security challenges, describing them as ‘selfish leaders.’

The leaders of some socio-cultural organisations led by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), had issued a communique accusing Buhari’s administration of incompetence in handling the security situation in the country.

But the Presidency, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said it considered the communique “as the shedding of crocodile tears by selfish leaders.”

The Presidency said the leaders felt alienated after “a transparent and accountable system halted their disproportionate survival on resources of the state,” and therefore urged Nigerians to ignore them.

“The Presidency urges Nigerians to ignore the unholy alliance by these groups who are stepping up their assault on the All Progressives Congress administration. The Presidency notes with dismay that the refrain about President Buhari not doing anything about security in the country had turned into the number one fake news item,” the statement read in part.

Shehu said it is sad and misleading for anyone to say that President Buhari had not responded to the security challenges in the country.

He referred to a press statement recently issued by the President’s Special Adviser, Femi Adesina, highlighting the Buhari-led administration’s achievement in tackling security challenges. Shehu stressed that those condemning Buhari’s administration should read the statement.

“The press release which was titled: “Combating Insecurity in the Country: Lest We Forget – Presidency’’ listed out ongoing security operations: (1) Nigerian Army’s Exercise Ayem Akpatuma covering Benue, Taraba, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Niger States launched in February to tackle cases of kidnappings, herdsmen/farmers’ clashes, among others; (2) Nigerian Air Force establishment of three new Quick Response Wings (QRW) in Taraba, Nasarawa and Benue States respectively, and deployment of Special Forces personnel.

“The press release also noted President Buhari’s approval for the establishment of a new Battalion of the Nigerian Army, as well as a new Police Area Command, in Birnin Gwari Local Council in Kaduna State, as part of measures to scale up security in response to the banditry affecting the area,'” he said.

Shehu added that those claiming that President Buhari has not done anything about security challenge are spreading fake news being peddled by selfish politicians with interests in keeping Nigerians incensed. LR News

A South Korean court on Friday sentenced impeached former President Park Geun Hye to a total of eight years in prison on top of the 24 years she already faces, in a verdict that found her guilty of accepting slush funds from the nation’s intelligence agency and interfering in an election.
Separately, prosecuors sought 30 years in prison and a fine of 118.5 billion won ($104.3 million) for the former president as proceedings in an appeals trial for her graft case concluded the same day.
Friday’s Seoul Central District Court ruling consists of six-year imprisonment and 3.3 billion won in penalties over the slush funds from the National Intelligence Service, and two years in prison over election interference.
Prosecutors had sought 12 years in prison for taking slush funds from the intelligence agency.
In April, the Seoul court sentenced Park to 24 years in prison and slapped her with a fine of 18 billion won for bribery and other crimes she was convicted of committing while in office.
Prosecutors, who sought the longer 30-year prison term and larger fine, appealed the ruling to a higher court, while Park, who denied all charges while boycotting her trial since the fall of 2017, did not.
The Seoul High Court will deliver a ruling on the appeals case on Aug. 24.
In April, Park was convicted of conspiring with her longtime confidante Choi Soon Sil to take 7 billion won in bribes from Lotte Group by making the retail giant financially support a foundation effectively controlled by Choi.
The former president was also found guilty of receiving bribes from Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea’s largest conglomerate.
Park, 66, was ousted from power in March 2017 as the country’s Constitutional Court upheld her impeachment in parliament over a corruption and abuse-of-power scandal, paving the way for her arrest and eventual prosecution.
Park, the daughter of assassinated military ruler Park Chung Hee, was in the final year of her single five-year term as president when she was removed from office. She remains in detention following her arrest in March 2017.

Senator Dino Melaye has been summoned by the Kogi State Police Command to report at the State Criminal and Investigation Department after his armed guards fired on a team of policemen on patrol duties in the state.

A police sergeant was the victim of the shooting, the police said and is recuperating in the hospital.

The Kogi Police Command asked Melaye to report at the SCIID office in the state capital, in the company of his armed guards, as investigation began on the shooting.

According to the police, their statement was partly to refute Melaye’s allegation that he was shot at by the police.

On the contrary, the police said that Melaye’s guards opened fire first, with the police responding.

In posts on Instagram, Melaye did not mention any shooting incident. However, he claimed the police tried to block his convoy with a grader, parked on a bridge, while he was on his way to Yagba east to commission some projects. According to him, his convoy avoided the blockade.

In another Instagram post, the senator representing Kogi West said the state government barricaded the road to stop his movement.

It was on Twitter that the senator claimed an attempt was made on his life during the visit to his state.

He claimed over 20 bullets were fired at his jeep by a combination of policemen, men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the military.

”I thank God for spearing my life once again. Over 20 bullets holes on my jeep. Combination of police, SARS and military. God I thank you.

The police statement reproduced below contradicted his account:

“Today, at about 1530hours, a team of policemen from the Command was on a routine Anti – Robbery/Kidnapping patrol along Aiyetoro Gbede – Mopa Road.

“During the patrol, and as it is often the practice, the team pinned down at a point at Iyah Gbede Junction, where they were observing the highway and occasionally conducting Stop and Search.
