President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday launched Election Security Management Workshop where he assured the nation that the will of the people “must always drive the democratic architecture’’ of Nigeria.
The two-day workshop is organised by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The President promised to ensure that security agencies involved in the conduct of the 2019 general elections performed their duties professionally to enable the electorate exercise their franchise.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, the President said that the success of the forthcoming elections would partly depend on the professionalism demonstrated by the security agencies.
Buhari added that positive changes had been implemented in the nation’s electoral laws to strengthen electoral processes.
He explained that the changes were to ensure that voters were not disenfranchised by actions or inactions of actors or institutions charged with the responsibility of driving the process.
He said “as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I am committed to upholding the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as this is sacred pathway toward our democracy.”
The President noted that “this had been demonstrated in the successes that INEC recorded in Ekiti, Anambra, Ondo and Edo governorship elections, as well as bye-elections in some other states.
“Therefore, the sanctity of the process must be upheld by all political parties and other stakeholders across political party divide if the country is to attain its full potential.’’
He recalled his acceptance speech in April 2015 where he affirmed commitment to promote credible elections devoid of interference in the work of INEC.
Buhari said that those assertions were informed by the conviction that no nation could advance its democratic culture under a security orientation that had no assurance for the safety of the electorate and their votes.
The President, therefore, reassured the international community that Nigeria would continue to advance its democratic credentials within the global space.
He added that “indeed, Nigeria’s commitment to democratic values underscores the leadership roles the country demonstrated in the enhancement of the democratic processes in Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Niger, The Gambia and Guinea Bissau.”
He reiterated confidence in INEC’s competence to conduct credible elections in 2019.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nasarawa State has recommended that seven corps members posted to the state face disciplinary measures for committing various offences during their service year.
Mrs Zainab Isah, NYSC Coordinator in the state, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lafia.
NAN reports that the NYSC in the state supervised a low-key Passing out Parade (POP) for the 2017 Batch “B” Stream II corps members in Lafia, and other local government areas of the state.
Isah said the affected corps members would face punishment after final ratification by the Nasarawa State NYSC Governing Board.
She said that some of them faced the possibility of having their service year extended by various periods for contravening the NYSC bye-laws.
“Some corps members erred during the service year. We have seven corps members that have disciplinary cases.
“Some of them missed the monthly allowances because they embarked on unauthorised journeys and others left their places of primary assignment without permission among other offences.
“For those who absconded, the allowances they missed are what would be used to pay them as they served their punishment and the period of the extension depended on the gravity of the misconduct,’’ she said.
The NYSC state coordinator said the decision to punish the erring corps members was based on the recommendation of the state NYSC Disciplinary Committee.
She added that it, however, had to be ratified by the NYSC governing board.
“We have a committee on corps discipline, comprising all Assistant Directors and all heads of branches in the secretariat.
“This body looks into the cases and invites the corps members concerned to defend themselves.
“At the end, a decision is taken strictly in accordance with our laws but the decision takes effect after the NYSC governing board has ratified it,’’ Isah said.
The coordinator advised the 524 corps members comprising 340 males and 184 females, who were passing out, to take advantage of the skills they acquired during their service year for self-employment.
She urged them to take advantage of the training to support themselves pending when a government job would come.
Isah thanked the state government for supporting NYSC and pleaded that corps members, who performed exceptionally and made significant impact in their primary assignments, should be absorbed in the state’s civil service.
She said that only three of the corps members that were passing out would be given awards for their exemplary service during the year.
The NYSC coordinator added that this would also need ratification from the NYSC governing board in the state.

Nigerian pop star, Davido, has reportedly been declared wanted in Gambia for allegedly assaulting one Kenny Egbuke.

Egbuke is a celebrity photographer who came to cover his recent music concert in Gambia.

Just recently, the singer had threatened the life of celebrity blogger, Ayodeji Jaguda for accusing him of buying YouTube views for his latest song, ‘Wonder Woman.’

Davido now has a case of assault reported against him at the Kololi Police station in Gambia.

According to celebrities investigative tabloid, Enquirermag, the singer violently broke the head, tore the lips of Egbuke who is said to be one of Gamiba’s most notable celebrity photographers.

According to the report, a young female fan had approached Davido for a selfie while he was eating.

The lady was said to have taken a few pictures of him before going close to him and this, it was gathered, did not go down well with Davido, who sent her back by shouting at her.

This attracted Egbuke’s interest as he advised Davido to take it cool with the lady because star-struck ladies could be annoying, especially when they see a star like him.

However, reports has it that the photographer’s advice got Davido livid with anger as he threw his very thick, heavy cognac glass directly at him, shattering his lips and skull.
