The Police Command in Sokoto State said it had recovered 948 guns under the state amnesty programme and police operations in last 24 months.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Murtala Mani, disclosed this at a news conference in Sokoto on Wednesday,
Mani said the recovered and surrendered weapons, included AK47, double and single barrel and locally fabricated guns with 1,200 ammunition.
The commissioner said some of the guns were surrendered during the amnesty initiative aimed at discouraging restiveness and criminalities as well as encouraging peaceful coexistence in the state.
He said some of the guns were recovered during the course of fire exchange between the criminal elements and the men of the command.
He added that some armed men voluntarily surrendered their weapons in recognition of the importance of amnesty initiative and that their nefarious activities were being monitored at all points across the state.
Mani further assured that the police would continue to work toward ensuring a crime-free society.
He said measures had been put in place to sanction all manufacturers of locally made weapons.
Mani said Sokoto enjoyed relative peace and appealed to the public to always report any suspicious movement or character to the police or any nearest security agency for prompt action. LR News

The Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday  arrested a pastor  who allegedly killed his lover and buried her body inside his church.

Parading the suspect at the scene of the crime, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, said the command had received a report of  a  missing person at the Divisional Headquarters in Ewekoro.

The commissioner said  that the case was reported by one Adebola Saheed,  who stated that  his younger sister, Mrs Raliat Sanni, 35,  had  left home since March 21 and had  yet to return.


Iliyasu said  on the strength of the report, police operatives at Ewekoro Division led by SP Oluwarotimi Jeje, the Divisional Police Officer, started investigation.

He said the pastor, after discreet analysis of facts,  was the last person who was seen with the missing person.

“The so called Pastor  was promptly arrested and thoroughly interrogated.

“In the course of interrogation, the pastor confessed to killing the victim and burying  her inside his church after removing her head and two hands for reasons only known to him and God,’’ he said.

The police commissioner  said  the  suspect  named   another  accomplice who was also paraded.

“This is the height of wickedness that can be meted out to a fellow human being. It will interest you to know that the victim was a  secret lover  to the pastor who eventually hacked her to death, ” he said.

He said that forensic investigation into the case had commenced and the matter would eventually be charged to court.

“This is another breakthrough resulting from a painstaking technical intelligence investigation aimed  at wiping out crime in our society as well as bringing to justice those who are adamant in making crime  their business.

“I appeal to the people to always be watchful of those they associate with and always disclose their movements to at least one person close to them no matter how confidential the movement  in order to prevent occurrence of this type of dastardly act, ” he said.

Speaking to journalists, the suspect  said that he was not the on


the one that killed the victim, alleging  that it was his  accomplice  who carried out the act  and later cut off her head and two hands.

The suspect, a teacher at Methodist High School, Private, Arigbajo, said  that he was forced by the accomplice to join  his cult  group.

He revealed that the victim was killed in the process of his initiation as a member of the cult group.

The alleged accomplice, however,  denied having anything to do with the pastor, saying that the last time he saw him was 2017. LR News

Customs' Officers on new uniform

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has approved additional set of uniform for its officers and men to give them options of uniforms depending on the weather and assignment to be executed.
The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), retired Col. Hameed Ali, said in a statement that the uniform had a white top, the usual ash-coloured trouser and a tie to match.
According to the statement signed by NCS spokesman, Joseph Attah, officers and men working in offices and airport would find the new uniform easy and more comfortable to wear on duty, especially during hot weather
“For the avoidance of doubt, this is not a change of uniform but an addition to give officers and men variety of official wears.
“The white top which can either be long or short sleeve is part of the ongoing reforms aimed at giving officers additional outlook that befits a Service operating on high integrity standard,” Attah said.
He said while the CGC was giving a nod for the official use of the new uniform, he expressed the hope that it would help shore up the image of the service.
Attah said the uniform was officially presented to the public by the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Tariff and Trade, Talatu Mairo, and himself. LR News

Two police officers and one detained suspect have been shot dead by yet-to-be identified gunmen who invaded Gegu Police Station on Lokoja-Abuja Road on Tuesday.

 Our correspondent reliably gathered that the bandits, numbering five, were armed with AK- 47 rifles and invaded the police station around 2.15am on Tuesday on motorcycles.

According to a source, immediately they arrived in the station, they opened fire to scare people away and moved into the station, where they shot the two policemen on duty.

A suspect in a police cell was also killed by the men.

It was further gathered that the gunmen made away with the police AK-47 rifles and ransacked the station for more guns and ammunition.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Police Commander, Mr. William Ayah, confirmed the attack, adding that while the two policemen died, the suspect was injured.

He said, “The command has commenced investigation into the attack.”
Meanwhile, the corpses of the two policemen have been deposited in  the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, by the Federal Road Safety Commission, while the injured suspect is receiving treatment in the hospital.LR News
