The police have confirmed 86 persons killed by suspected herdsmen during an attack on Gashish district of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mathias Tyopev, told Channels Television on Sunday that six people also were injured while at least 50 houses, two vehicles and 15 motorcycles were razed.

He confirmed the casualty figure and destruction after a search and rescue team from the Plateau State Police Command visited the communities affected by Saturday’s attack.

The six villages attacked by the assailants are Xlands, Gindin Akwati, Ruku, Nhgar, Kura Falls and Kakuruk, all in Gashish.

According to the command spokesman, the figure is an update of the initial 11 death toll he disclosed to the media.

He said, “I want to inform members of the public that we had earlier on in the day informed and confirmed the news of the attack on the Gashish district of Barkin Ladi and confirmed the death toll to be 11 persons.

“I was waiting for a report from the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) who was sent by the Commissioner of Police to carry out a search and rescue operation in the district.

“When he came back, he came with an updated figure and the figure that we have now is that 86 people lost their lives in the attack.”

Tyopev explained that the initial death figure given by the police was not to deceive the public but to give the true position of what they had as at that time.

As apprehension mounts across the state, particularly LGAs sharing borders with Barkin Ladi, the state government imposed a dusk-to dawn-curfew in the affected local government as well as Riyom and Jos South LGAs.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr Rufus Bature, explained in a statement on Sunday that the curfew was imposed to avert any spillover and reprisal, as well as curb the escalation of the crisis.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Simon Lalong, had to cut short his attendance of the National Convention of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja as he returned to the state before the exercise was concluded.

Visiting the affected communities, Governor Lalong appealed to people to remain calm and respect the curfew as the government investigate investigates the immediate and remote causes of the attack.

Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has been sworn in as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress.

Mr Oshiomhole, who was affirmed as the National Chairman of the party unopposed on Saturday, was sworn in on Sunday by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Ahead of his inauguration, the National Working Committee and National Executive Committee of the party were dissolved to make way for the new leadership.

It was a long wait for his inauguration as the National Convention dragged on deep into a second day.
Oshiomhole replaces Mr John Odigie-Oyegun who became National Chairman in 2014 and led the party into the 2015 general elections.

The former labour leader, however, has his work cut out for him as the party has battled internal crisis for months now.

Members of the party in some state are unable to see eye to eye and the internal divisions were evident during the ward and state congresses leading up to the national convention with parallel congresses held in some states.

The national convention was not spared of the dispute and divisions threatened to derail it at some point.

Despite heavy security presence at the Eagles Square in Abuja where the exercise took place, delegates from Imo and Delta became engaged in a free for all while President Muhammadu Buhari was addressing the convention.

Their dispute was, however, not as a result of the President speech. Rather, it was about old divisions among them worsened by disagreement over who to vote for.

The Imo delegates were allegedly divided with a group supporting the state governor and a second group supporting his deputy.

The situation in Delta is also reportedly due to conflicting loyalties.

Work To Do

In February, President Buhari had appointed the national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu, lead reconciliatory efforts in the party. The task of settling internal crisis and uniting the party will be one of the first challenges for the new National Chairman.
Just before the

Just before the convention, Senators Ajayi Borrofice and Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi, told Channels Television that there was a lot of work to be done to unite the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

According to Senator Borrofice, the outcome of the convention and the steps taken afterwards are crucial to the survival of the party.

On his part, Senator Akanbi believes Oshiomhole’s experience as the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) during the President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration would come in handy.

He said, “Looking at his antecedent, he was once a leader of the labour union in this country.

“He has managed so many crises and I believe that if he eventually emerges, he has a lot of work to do. He can use his experience to resolve most of these problems.

“There is a lot of work that needs to be done. I believe that before we go into the 2019 elections, a lot of aggrieved party parties should have been pacified and we need a united front to win the 2019 general elections.”

The Plateau State government has imposed a curfew in three troubled Local government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

This follows the attack on some villages in Barkin Ladi LGA by suspected herdsmen, while Riyom and Jos South LGAs are also affected by the curfew.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr Rufus Bature, explained in a statement on Sunday that the dusk-to-dawn curfew was to avert a breakdown of law and order.

He added that movement has been restricted from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, except those on essential duties in the three council areas.

The attack on the villages took place more than three months after the state government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Bassa LGA.

This was prompted by an early morning the attack on Dong and Rafiki communities in the local council which claimed lives and destroyed residents’ property.

Plateau has been one of the states in northern part of the country suffering from the herdsmen-farmers’ crisis which has led to the death of many, especially in the North-central.

One of the series of attacks that hit the state recently was that of March 22, during which three persons were killed in Tah community of Dong in Jos North LGA.

Barely three weeks later, gunmen killed five persons and injured three others in another attack on Inding village in Barkin Ladi LGA.

Residents have called on the government at both state and Federal levels to come to their, describing the latest attack on Barkin Ladi and other local governments a major threat to their safety.

A former member of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Ms. Comfort Obi says that the Commission approves  promotions of only those recommended by the Inspector-General of police (I-GP).
Obi, who made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, stressed that there was no truth in the story currently trending in the social media that the Commission carried out illegal promotions.
She said that the Commission had never selected any police personnel for promotion as only the I-GP has the prerogative to submit names of those he considers qualified to be elevated or demoted.
“The I-GP is in charge of Operations. He knows his men. Recommendations come from him to the PSC for Promotions. The commission had never picked individuals for promotion or for disciplinary action.
“There is no truth that some officers paid the commission to be promoted. I challenged anyone with such evidence to show it to the public. If such payment was made at the Force headquarters, I am not aware too,” she said.
On the promotion of some officers in 2018 who were also promoted in 2017, Obi said that the I-GP recommended them for such elevation due to their special performance in their assignments.
She said that some officers were also promoted based on the office they occupied and geo-political zone, stressing that the recent list included those who arrested suspected kidnapper, Evans.
“To the best of my knowledge, the officers they are talking about are those involved in, and with the tracking and arrest of Evans. Officer like Abba Kyari and his men. They are doing well. They were recommended and we approved.
“The Force Police Public Relations Officer was given acting capacity rank to be at per with sisters’ agencies spokesmen. It is wrong for the force spokesman to be on a lower rank when his colleagues in sister’s agencies are of higher ranks.
“Even in acting rank, you are not paid the salary of such rank. Some officers protested when the Commissioner of police in Lagos State, CP Imohimi Edgal was promoted from DC to CP.
“I don’t know Edgal before this time, but we discovered that his geo-political zone has no CP and above all, there is Edgal’s Course mate who is a DIG.
“There are 10 AIGs that are Edgal’s mates. He had passed all his exams and no query in his file.
“Some people also protested against Magu’s promotion despite the enormous job he is doing. Even though it is the responsibility of the PSC to promote, it does so only when the I-GP recommends it,” Obi said.
She debunked the story that some officers sacked for more than 10 years were recalled and promoted over serving officers, stressing that anyone out of service for four years, except by court order, cannot be re-admitted into the Force.
Obi said that when such person is called back, the commission would turn their dismissal to retirement without allowing such person into the system.
On the last police recruitment by JAMB, Obi said that no Arabic questions were set for the police personnel, noting, however, that there were instructions to the men on which of the subjects they should attend.
“It is not true JAMB used Arabic to set questions for our last recruits. In same question paper, there were Arts, Agriculture and Arabic questions.
“Those subjects were meant for other people by JAMB not police personnel. They were instructed to ignored them. It is not true the I-GP favoured his people in the recruitment,” she explained.
On disciplinary measures against unprofessional officers, Obi said many were dismissed, including a DIG, some reduced in rank, reprimanded, stressing that the I-G also made their recommendations to PSC.
No fewer than 3, 660 officers were promoted in May.

In an effort to boost security, the Federal Government has deployed an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Mr Danjuma Muhammad, to take charge of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Police Command.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Muhammad took over from Mr Abdullahi Ali, a Commissioner of Police, who retired recently.
The spokesperson for the command, DSP Joseph Alabi, confirmed the development to newsmen on Sunday in Lagos.
Alabi said that the deployment of an AIG to take over the helms of affairs at the nation’s busiest airport was strategic.
According to him, Muhammad is an experienced officer who has served in many commands and formations.
He said that the deployment would improve safety and security of travellers and other airport users.
“The transfer of a very senior ranking officer to the airport command is very strategic; the objective is to ensure that nothing untoward occurs here.
“The AIG has assumed duties and has warned officers attached to the command that he would not tolerate laziness, idleness and dereliction of duties,’’ the spokesman said.
Alabi said that the AIG had also read the riot act to touts parading within the airport environment.
He said that Muhammad had assured travellers and other airport users that adequate measures had been put in place for their safety and security.
“The command is working with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and other security agencies to ensure that our airport is safe.
“Our advice is that travellers and other airport users should remain vigilant and law-abiding as well as comply with the new security measures in the airport environment,”Alabi said.

The Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) has apologised to residence for the inconveniences caused by traffic diversion during Saturday’s National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.
Transport Secretary of FCTA, Mr Kayode Opeifa, tendered the apology in response to complaints by some Abuja residents and motorists over “difficulties’’ arising from diversion of vehicular movements from routes leading to Eagle Square, the convention venue.
“We apologise for any inconvenience experienced. We could do better, but under the current circumstance we have done well,’’ Opeifa told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The convention drew thousands of party leaders, delegates and other members across the country, resulting in an upsurge in vehicular and human traffic.
Combined teams of security and traffic management agencies diverted motorists from both ends of Shehu Shagari Way and Ahmadu Bello Way and adjoining routes in the vicinity of the convention venue.
The agencies involved in the assignment included Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCTA Directorate of Road Traffic Services and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Although Opeifa announced on Thursday that motorists would be diverted through alternative routes, some of them and commuters, who spoke to NAN, said they were not aware of any notice for the diversions.
Mr Prince Uchenna, a commercial bus driver plying the Mararaba-Wuse route, said the announcement should have been made at least a week before the convention date.
“On my first trip from Mararaba this morning, I spent almost an hour at Bullet Junction because the place was jammed by vehicles making U-turn.
“I would have avoided that road if I heard the announcement you are talking about,’’ he told a NAN correspondent.
Opeifa said that except for the Shehu Shagari Way and its approaches that were restricted, most, if not all other parts of the city, remained calm.
He, however, thanked Abuja residents and road users for heeding “our traffic advisory’’, and solicited continued support and cooperation from them.
“I call on them to continue to obey our traffic management and security officers who are doing their best to keep traffic moving with pride, dignity and honour.
“They have done so and fantastic too,’’ Opeifa said. LR News
