There was a clash on Monday between the police and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) at the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The Shiite members had stormed the area to protest the released of their leader Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The angry protesters were said to have grounded the complex and taken over the roads in the area, just a few metres from the Presidential Villa and the National Assembly complex.

They were reportedly armed with stones, daring the security operatives that were earlier deployed in the area to dislodge them.

A source, however, confirmed to Channels Television via telephone that a team of policemen swiftly arrived at the scene to disperse the protesting Shiite members.

The protesters were removed from the area with tear gas and water cannon, while the Shiites also destroyed a police vehicle.
A police vehicle destroyed when the Shiite members clashed with the police on May 14 in Abuja.

Monday’s incident is the latest in the series of clashes between both parties this year.

In a recent faceoff on April 23, the Shiite members threw stones and other objects at the security operatives, causing damage to cars and buildings in the Maitama area of Abuja.

In return, the police fire tear gas at the protesters in order to disperse them and cordoned off part of the road between Eagle Square and Unity Fountain in Abuja.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has continued to accuse the Federal Government of disobeying court orders over the continued detention of El-Zakzaky.
Ibrahim El-Zakzaky

In a petition dated May 11, 2018, SERAP asked the United Nations to uphold Nigeria’s international obligations on the protection of the independence and integrity of the judiciary.

El-Zakzaky was detained after members of the Shiite group clashed with soldiers in Zaria in December 2015, an incident which led to the death of several people.

The Kaduna State government had consequently charged El-Zakzaky and three other leaders of the Shiite group to court in April 2018.

They include Mallama Zeenah Ibraheem, Yakub Yahaya Katsina, and Sanusi Abdulkadir Koki.

The Shiite leaders were charged with eight counts bordering on culpable homicide, inciting disturbance and promoting unlawful assembly. LR News

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday fixed June 13 for the arraignment of five directors of the National Theatre for allegedly receiving N500,000 each from a government contractor.

The defendants are a former Acting General Manager, George Ntanta; the Director of Business Development and Events Management, Abiodun Abe; the Director of Engineering and Technology, Ndubuisi Nwogu; the Director of Planning, Research and Strategies, Doris Okafor and Mr Femi Joel.

They were charged by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel on two counts of violating the Code of Conduct Act.

According to the charge, the accused were said to have committed the offence on January 16, 2017.

The prosecution alleged that while being public officers, they accepted the sum of N500,000 each from a commercial firm, Market Execution Solutions Ltd, which had a contract with the Federal Government.

The accused were alleged to have accepted the money on account of transactions entered into on behalf of the Federal Government with the firm in the discharge of their duties.

At Monday’s proceedings, Aminu Alilu, a legal officer from the Federal Ministry of Justice, announced his appearance for the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Alilu told the court that he had directives from the AGF to take over and continue with the prosecution of the case.

According to him, by the provisions of sections 174 (1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the AGF reserves the right to take over, continue or discontinue any criminal charge.

The lawyer, therefore, urged the court to so hold.

In his ruling, Justice Muslim Hassan upheld the submissions of Mr Alilu and held that by the provisions of the constitution, the AGF possessed the power to take over criminal proceedings and “is not legally bound to explain the reasons for the takeover”.

He reiterated the provisions of sections 174 of the constitution, stating that the AGF’s power of taking over can be exercised by him personally or by any of his officers.

The court consequently held that: “Mr A. K Alilu is an officer of the A-G and he can validly take over the case”.

The case was later adjourned till June 13, 2018, for the arraignment of the defendants.

The much talk about and profitable trading in cryptocurrencies has met dead end as Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe stopped local banks from trading or processing their payments.
The apex bank Governor, Mr. John Mangudya, said on Monday in Harare that the central bank had not licensed anyone to trade in cryptocurrencies and that dealers and investors did not have the protection of the law.
Cryptocurrency such as bitcoins is a digital or virtual currency in which coded techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds.
It operates independently of a country’s central bank.
Mangudya said that the Reserve Bank had directed all banking institutions not to provide banking services to facilitate any person or entity in dealing with or settling virtual (crypto) currencies.
“The nature of cryptocurrency transactions makes them the currency of choice for money launderers and other criminals,” Mangudya said in a statement.
Prices of digital currencies such as bitcoin rocketed at the end of last year as retail investors across the globe scrambled to get a piece of the profits.
That trend triggered regulatory warnings and threats to crack down on the market.
Officials from Golix and Styx24.com, Zimbabwe’s trading platform could not immediately comment on the central bank decision.
An industry insider who follows the cryptocurrencies in Zimbabwe said the ban would affect settlements between exchanges but sales between individuals would not be impacted.
“We can sit over a cup of coffee and transfer cryptos among ourselves. The entire logic of crypto is peer to peer transaction without trusted third parties,” said the insider, who declined to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the press.
In the southern African nation, those who trade in bitcoin say it offers rare protection as their bank deposits lose value almost by the day while others use it to fund family members studying abroad or purchase goods online. Reuters/LR News
