Vice President professor Yemi Osinbajo

The Vice President professor Yemi Osinbajo has called for the creation of state police amid increasing security challenges in the country.
He made the call on Thursday at a National Assembly security summit, as he believes this would help tighten security across the nation.

According to him, the state policing system is the way to go because having a centralized system –  as is currently practised, cannot effectively secure the nation.

Despite calling for the creation of state police, Professor Osinbajo also wants the Nigerian Police Force to be strengthened and proposed that the current number of police in the country be tripled.

He also called for more funding for the police as well as other security agencies.

Professor Osinbajo’s comments come at a time when the police have come under criticism with some questioning its ability to effectively play its role.

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives called for the removal of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Moshood Jimoh, after condemning their actions and utterances in connection with the killings in Benue.

While the lawmakers wanted the IGP out for his “failings”, they condemned the PPRO for referring to the Benue State Governor as a “drowning man”.

The killings in Benue and some other parts of the country which have been blamed on herdsmen, have also led to criticism for President Buhari.

But Vice President Osinbajo rejected insinuations that the President is ignoring the killings by herdsmen because he is Fulani.

He said no other issue preoccupies the President as much as the killings in the country.

The VP, therefore, warned stakeholders not to allow the conflict between herdsmen and farmers assume ethnic and religious dimensions.

The two-day summit which is taking place at the NAF Conference Center, Ahmadu Bello Way, Abuja, is aimed at providing an all-inclusive platform for finding long-term solutions to the security challenges in Nigeria.

Troops of 707 Special Forces Brigade, Nigerian Army, have arrested two armed men identified as herdsmen.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the 707 Special Forces Brigade, Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, on Thursday.

According to the statement, the troops sighted a group of militia who were suspected to be “planning a dangerous mission”, while on their routine patrol along Gbajimba – Iyiodeh road in Guma LGA of Benue state on Tuesday.

On attempting to approach them, the armed men opened fire on the troops and engaged them in a gun battle.

The Special Forces, however, intensified their pursuit and succeeded in arresting two of them while the others fled in disarray.

The herdsmen have since been handed over to the police.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and two other Unions in Kano State have threatened warning strike over alleged persistent deduction of workers’ salary.

The NLC Chairman in Kano, Kabiru Minjibir disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday after a meeting with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Public Service Negotiations Council (JPSNC).

Minjibir said the consultants who were assigned the handling of salary issues in the state had been deducting workers’ salary without justification, thereby causing them unnecessary hardship.

“The intended warning strike is due to the protracted inconsistencies in the payment of monthly salaries to workers by the so-called consultants engaged by government.

“We noted with serious concern the unauthorised deduction of undefined amount of over N367.50 from worker monthly salaries and N168.00 from pensioners for undisclosed reason.

“The government must suspend the use of consultants on salary issues latest by May 2018 and hand it over to qualified and experienced civil servants,’’ he said.

Minjibir said the unions also faulted the non-implementation of the annual salary increment of workers as well as delay in promotion of the state civil servants, Local Governments and SUBEB workers.

The NLC Chairman said the unions resolved that government should put on hold the proposed deduction of monthly premium to Contributory Health care Scheme due in February 2018.

He said the deduction should be put on hold until all issues of salary, documentation and access to healthcare services were completely resolved.
Minjibir also urged the government to respect its resolve to pay salary, pension on or before 25th of every month.
He said the labour unions would have no option than to “embark on a three-day warning strike after March 5”, if the issues raised were not addressed.

Ninety per cent of households in Nigeria consume contaminated water and other impure substances, the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) has revealed.
Mrs Maureen Zubie-Okolo, a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist with UNICEF, told the Latest Reality Metro that the water and sanitation situation in the country was worrisome.
She said although 64.1 per cent of Nigerians had access to improved drinking water sources, North-East states were, however, lagging behind with 52.4 per cent, while South-West states top the chart with 87.3 per cent of its residents having access to improved water sources.
“About two out of every three households use improved water sources, while a little more than one-third use improved sanitation compared to 58.5 percent and 31 per cent respectively in 2011.
According to the report, overwhelming majority representing 90.8 per cent of households in Nigeria, drink water contaminated by faeces and other impure substances like Ecoli.
Zubie-Okolo said there was the need for more advocacy to all tiers of government to make policies and programmes that would increase access to improved water sources and sanitation.
She said it was a known fact that water-borne diseases, such as diarrheal had been the leading cause of hospital admissions, especially among under-five children.
The UNICEF official said access to basic water and sanitation would promote wellbeing of citizens and reduce preventable diseases and deaths among the populace.
According to her, the MICS report, carried out in 2017 by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in collaboration with UNICEF, shows the country’s progress and lapses in key areas of development.
She said the overall goal was to advocate for a change in policy formulation and implementation for the development of the nation.
Mrs Elizabeth Ugoh told LR News that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, was working with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to enforce the National Standard for Drinking Water Quality.
Ugoh, a Deputy Director, Water Quality Control and Sanitation in the ministry said, “the ministry is calling on all Nigerians drinking water from borehole and other sources to regularly test their water in laboratories across the country to reduce consuming unwholesome water.
“We are also calling on borehole drillers to abide by the National Drilling Code of Practice,’’ she added.
According to her, six new laboratories are being constructed in the six geo-political zones by the Federal Government to improve water quality and standard in the country.
Ugoh said that the six existing laboratories were inadequate due to the country’s large population.
It would be recalled that UNICEF had called on the media to use data journalism to help highlight lapses in development indices and the overall goal of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The World Bank warned and compared cryptocurrencies to “Ponzi schemes”.
The warning is the latest financial voice to raise questions about the legitimacy of digital currencies such as Bitcoin.
“In terms of using Bitcoin or some of the cryptocurrencies, we are also looking at it, but I’m told the vast majority of cryptocurrencies are basically Ponzi schemes,” World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said Wednesday at an event in Washington.
“It’s still not really clear how it’s going to work.”
The development lender is “looking really carefully” at blockchain technology, a platform that uses so-called distributed ledgers to allow digital assets to be traded securely. There’s hope the technology could be used in developing countries to “follow the money more effectively” and reduce corruption, Kim said.
The value of cryptocurrencies soared in 2017 before slumping, with Bitcoin losing nearly two-thirds of its value since mid-December.
While cryptocurrency technology has the potential to reshape global finance, concerns have been raised about its volatility and the potential for money laundering or other crimes.
Nouriel Roubini discusses the downsides to cryptocurrencies and calls Bitcoin the “mother of all bubbles.”
In a speech this week, Bank of International Settlements chief Agustin Carstens said there’s a “strong case” for authorities to rein in digital currencies because their links to the established financial system could cause disruptions.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has said that “governance and risk management will be critical” for cryptocurrencies.
