Former Ondo Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the presidential declaration by former Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko under the Labour Party, (LP).

Dr Mimiko had on Thursday declared his interest to run for Presidency under the platform of the L.P.

He promised security, restructuring and youth empowerment as his top agenda.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba explained that the Labour Union is the registered owners of the party and will not allow Dr Mimiko to return to the party that provided the platform that saw him emerge as the Ondo State Governor in February 2009.

“It is not possible for Mimiko to run under the Labour Party and we want to say no to that. Mimiko has no business as a member of the Labour Party.

“The party is registered by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress, Market Women Association, students, we registered the party and the certificate of the party is with the NLC General Secretary.

Comrade Wabba, who was flanked by some members of the party, insisted that the factional chairman of the party, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam is not the recognised chairman of the party.

“Therefore, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam cannot continue to function as the chairperson of the party.

“That is for those who desire to contest various elective positions under the Labour Party through Salam, the former national chairman of the party.

“It would be recalled that he was removed at the special national convention of the party held on October 3, 2017″, Wabba insisted.

Mr Abdusalam while commending Dr Mimiko on his decision to join the Presidential race said Nigeria can restore its glory and reclaim its greatness if he is given the opportunity to lead.

Former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has declared his interest to run for Presidency in the 2019 general elections.

He made the announcement at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday while giving his declaration speech titled “Because We Care”.

He said, “I am running because, like many Nigerians, I am sick and tired of seeing our country become the butt of jokes everywhere you travel to around the world. I am running because I know we can do better, and we will do better.

“I know this because anywhere Nigerians find themselves, no matter the situation, we always rise above adversity. We don’t just survive, we thrive.

“It is high time we replicated in our country, that indomitable spirit of Nigerians, that spirit of accomplishment, which has made stars of individual Nigerians all over the world. Nigerian workers have thrown their weight behind the 14-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to the Federal Government over delay regarding new minimum wage.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Labour leaders had on Wednesday cautioned the Federal Government against foot-dragging on the new minimum wage and allow the tripartite committee to conclude its job to avoid action.
The labour leaders, who are members of the Minimum Wage Committee at a joint news conference addressed in Lagos, gave the Federal Government 14 days to ensure that the committee conclude its work or be ready to face action.
The President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba, had said that the committee was not pleased with the comments allegedly made by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.
Ngige had last week said that the committee should adjourn indefinitely to give room for further consultations with the government.
“We view his supposed pronouncement with great concern, suspicion and outrage.
“This new antic certainly is not acceptable to Nigerian workers, who had expected a New National Minimum Wage since 2016,’’ Wabba said.
However, some of the workers, who spoke with NAN on Thursday in Abuja expressed disappointment over the way and manner government was handling the issue.
Mr Salisu Umar, a civil servant, berated the Federal Government for obvious lack of concern to the plight of workers.
He said it would be outright lack of feelings for Nigerian workers not to heed the call for increased wage in the face of harsh economy.
Umar called on the NLC not to rest on its oars in the pursuit of a new minimum wage, adding that whatever action the union resolved to take to press home their demand would receive the support of workers.
Another worker, Mrs Dorcas Abulu, called on the NLC to put the Federal Government on its toes until the national new minimum wage was approved.
She noted that prices of goods and services had skyrocketed, adding that workers could hardly afford the basic needs of life because of inflation.
Abulu said the NLC should not succumb to intimidation or be compromised on the negotiation processes, adding that nothing must be done against the interest of Nigerian workers to get a new wage.
Mrs Aderinola Kemi, also a civil servant, urged NLC to ensure that they were not deceived with promises of implementation after the 2019 general elections.
She said that election time was the best period to force the Federal Government to implement the new wage, adding that no political party would want to jettison its workers’ demand during electioneering.
Another worker, Mr Issa Kamar, said the NLC should make good its threat by taking prompt action at the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum, adding that the workers were fully behind it.
Others, who spoke with NAN, were unanimous in their support for any action taken by the NLC that would favour the workers and force the Federal Government to return to the negotiating table.
Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, had on May Day while addressing Nigerian workers at the Eagle Square said the implementation of the new minimum wage would begin in September.
Also, the NLC president had on Sept. 10 said both the government and labour agreed that the September timeline must be respected.
According to him, the NLC is committed to respecting the timeline and that is why we left everything we are doing to do the needful to be able to do a good job.

The Federal High Court has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to pay the sum of N10.5 million as compensation to journalist, Jones Abiri, over his illegal detention for two years by the security agency.

At the resumed hearing on Thursday, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba stated that the DSS did not deny arresting and detaining him since July 2016, denying him access to his doctors, family and friends.
Jones Abiri
He further stated that when Abiri was eventually charged to court earlier this year, he was not charged with the crimes for which he was arrested.

The judge then ruled that the DSS acted outside the provisions of the law regarding the Terrorism Prevention Act, and therefore, ordered the agency to pay the sum.

Mr Abiri, a Bayelsa-based journalist and publisher of the Weekly Source Magazine, was arrested at his office in Yenagoa, the state capital, for his alleged link to armed militancy in the Niger Delta region, an allegation he denied.

AAC Presidential Aspirant, Mr Omoyele Sowore

Mr Omoyele Sowore, a presidential aspirant of African Action Congress (AAC), says he will ensure civil servants in the country receive N100,000 as minimum wage from 2019 if he is elected Nigeria’s president.
Speaking at a town hall meeting organised by the party in Badagry, Sowore said Nigerians were indirectly going into slavery by traveling to different countries in search of jobs.
He noted that over 43 million black Africans were sold into slavery in the coastal city about 400 years ago, a development he said was still happening indirectly because of lack of job.
“I am in politics to stop this by providing 500,000 jobs yearly.
“The minimum wage for civil servant will be N100,000 from 2019,” he said.
Sowore regretted the poor state of roads in the country and describing the Lagos-Badagry expressway as the worst in Nigeria.
The presidential aspirants said the historic town had been cut off from the rest of the country due to deplorable state of the expressway.
“I have traveled all over Nigeria, but I have not seen any international expressway like Lagos-Badagry.
“We spent almost five hours coming here instead of one and half hours.
“Badagry town has been cut-off from Nigeria due to deplorable state of the road.
“This is very shameful,” the presidential aspirant said.
He promised to construct two expressways from Badagry to Lagos, and another one linking Badagry and Ogun State if elected into power in the 2019 general elections.
Sowore urged the residents of Badagry to vote wisely for candidates of their choice.
“I heard now that politicians are buying Permanent Voters Card (PVC) for N10,000. Please don’t sell your PVC; the PVC is your future.
“Can you do any business with N10,000? They will buy your card; your future is your PVC; keep it,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was attended by a large number of youths in the coastal town.
