A Federal High Court in Abuja is in about the claim of ill health by the former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Olisah Metuh.

Justice Okon Abang expressed his reservations while delivering a ruling on an application filed by mister Metuh seeking the release of his passport to enable him to travel abroad to treat a spinal cord ailment.

The trial judge questioned why Metuh had not appealed the two earlier decisions of the court that refused to release his international passport.

He voiced his suspicions that there might be a hidden agenda by the politician to present the court as inhuman, by filing the same application before the trial court a third time, rather than going on appeal.

Justice Abang agreed with the arguments of the prosecution that filing the application for the third time was an unpardonable and reckless abuse of judicial processes.

He concluded by saying he cannot sit on appeal over his own judgment, having already refused an application for the release of Metuh’s passport twice. LR News

Russian President, Vladimir Putin

Russia said Thursday that Syrian government forces found German “chlorine containers” and British “smoke grenades” in the country’s Eastern Ghouta, an ex-rebel enclave that was taken over by regime forces in April.

“In the liberated territories of Eastern Ghouta, Syrian government troops found containers with chlorine — the worst kind of chemical weapon — from Germany, as well as smoke grenades made in — attention — Salisbury,” Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

Salisbury is the British town where a former Russian double agent, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter were poisoned on March 4.

The incident sparked a bitter diplomatic crisis between Moscow and London. Britain says Russia was behind the attack on the pair, a charge Russia furiously denies.

Moscow, an ally of the Syrian regime, has long claimed an alleged chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma this month was “staged” by Syrian rebels and the civil defence organisation, the White Helmets.

Western powers accuse Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad of using chemical weapons against civilians in Douma.

The United States, France and Britain carried out air strikes on what they said were Assad’s chemical weapons installations in response.

A alleged jilted suitor, Mr Muntari Idris, on Thursday appealed to a Sharia court at Magajin Gari in Kaduna State to help him to recover N68,000 he spent on his ex-fiancee.
Idris, who resides at Kawo, told the court that he got engaged to Miss Ummahani Manji in 2016 and paid N25,000 to her guardian, Mr Abdullahi Tarazo, as dowry, but she abandoned him.
The complainant told the court that Manji called off their engagement 16 days to their wedding.
He said that he needed refund of the dowry and all other expenses on Manji throughout their courtship.
“I spent a total of N68,000 on Ummahani; I gave Baba Abdullahi N25,000 dowry, paid for transport to Saminaka where her parents live, showered them with gifts and also sewed clothes for Ummahani.
“I want this honourable court to help me to recover the amounts from Ummahani because she refused to marry me and married someone else,” he prayed.
Responding, Manji, however, refuted Idris’s claim of spending up to N68,000 on her.
She told the court that she only knew of the N25,000 dowry and a Nokia phone he gave her.
She submitted that she did not call off the engagement.
Manji said that Idris told her that he was no longer interested in the relationship.
“He is the one that called off the engagement shortly after we had a misunderstanding on the postponement of our wedding,” she said.
She prayed the court to give her up until the end of April to refund Idris the N25,000 dowry.
The judge, Malam Musa Saad, adjourned the case to April 24 for evidence by witnesses.

There have been reactions in various media to comments by President Muhammadu Buhari, criticising youths in the country at a Commonwealth Business Forum in Westminster, the United Kingdom.

In the video from The Cable, President Buhari said many of the youths below the age of 30 are uneducated, but they are waiting for everything to be done for them, just because Nigeria is an oil-rich country.

Speaking to Channels Television on Thursday, the president’s spokesman Mr Femi Adesina explained that President Buhari was referring to some, and not all the young people in the country.

However, many of the reactions have been critical of the President’s comments, some of whom accused him of describing the youths as lazy and being humourous with national pride.

The police have recovered the Senate mace that was stolen by suspected thugs who disrupted plenary session at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.

Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Mr Aremu Adeniran, revealed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, barely 24 hours after the hoodlums made away with the mace after invading the Senate.

Lawmakers at the Red Chamber had condemned the incident as an act of treason, saying it was an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force.

They also pointed an accusing finger at the lawmaker representing Delta Central senatorial district, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, claiming he led the hoodlums to plenary to seize the symbol of authority of the Senate.

This led to the arrest of Senator Omo-Agege by the police, although the lawmaker has since denied any involvement in the theft of the mace.

The National Assembly had also ordered the authorities of the police and the Department of State Service (DSS) to recover the mace.

In line with the directive, Mr Adeniran disclosed in the statement today (Thursday) that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, immediately instituted a high-powered Police Investigation and Intelligence Team coordinated by the IGP Monitoring Unit of the force into the incident.

The police boss also directed a total lock-down of the Federal Capital Territory, with intense surveillance patrol and thorough stop and search operations at various police check-points with a view to arresting the perpetrators and possible recovery of the stolen mace.

“The police teams engaged in massive raids of identified criminal spots/flashpoints, stop and search operations, visibility and confidence-building patrols, intelligence gathering which forced the suspected miscreants to abandon the mace at a point under the flyover before the City Gate, where a patriotic passer-by saw it and alerted the police,” the statement read.

The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer noted that a discreet investigation into the incident is still ongoing to arrest and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He also said the police appreciate the members of the public, most especially motorists within Abuja Metropolis for their support, cooperation and timely information during the rigorous stop and search operations that led to the recovery of the mace.

Adeniran stated that the renewed commitment of the police to protecting the lives and property, peace and stability, as well as sustaining democracy in the country remains unequivocal and unwavering.

Senate mace being taken away

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the invasion of the Senate chamber by thugs led by suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege who snatched the mace- the symbol of authority of the upper house.
Atiku, in a statement from his media office in Abuja on Wednesday, said the attack was a dangerous precedent and an assault on Nigeria’s democracy by anti-democratic elements.
“I am utterly embarrassed, shocked and outraged by this ugly development because it is not only a threat to a major democratic institution, but it also represents a grave danger to the survival of our democracy.
“If criminals could commit such security breach with impunity, it means that our entire democracy is in danger; those behind this illegality should be prosecuted to avoid creating a monster that could consume them.
“It is unacceptable and reprehensible to subject the National Assembly to this intimidation and humiliation. This attack by thugs should not go unpunished, no matter who is involved,” he said.
Atiku said that, given the tension in the country, the timing of the attack could not have come at a worse time for Nigeria.
He said that using illegal and unconstitutional methods to threaten the authority of a key democratic institution was unacceptable, evil, and condemnable.
The former vice-president noted that it was inconceivable that hoodlums could force their way into the Senate and take away the mace.
He called for the immediate investigation into the incident and the prompt prosecution of those involved.
