Lack of sleep can increase diabetes risk

Sleep is undoubtedly one of physiology’s most mysterious but essential functions. We all need it, yet the exact reasons why it’s so important are still being debated.
What we do know is that sleep is important for memory consolidation; it also seems to afford the brain time to clear out toxins that built up throughout the day.
A lack of sleep has a two-way relationship with psychiatric conditions: sleep disturbance can be caused by mental illness, and sleep deprivation can exacerbate, or even cause, mental illnesses.
Physically, sleep allows the body to recuperate; for instance, muscles are given time to heal and grow.
Sleep deprivation is considered to be a large-scale concern in the United States. Due to a range of factors — including excessive screen time, artificial lighting, busy lives, and hectic jobs — around 1 in 3 people in the U.S. do not get the recommended 7 hours of sleep each night.
Scientists are still unraveling this epidemic’s potential consequences on health.
Studies have already shown that people who do not get enough sleep are more likely to eat more, exercise less, and put on excess weight.
Studies have also shown an increased risk of diabetes, but exactly why diabetes might occur has not been understood.
A recent study found a relationship between poor sleep and wound healing in type 2 diabetes.
A new study expands on our understanding of this relationship. The authors of the latest study, at Toho University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan, explain further, saying:
“It was not clear whether glucose intolerance was due to the changes in food intake or energy expenditure or to the sleep deprivation itself.”
In other words, are the changes in diet and exercise related to poor sleep the reason for a rise in diabetes risk, or is something else at work? The researchers set out to understand exactly why sleep deprivation might undermine insulin sensitivity.
To do so, they used a mouse model, focusing on changes in their livers. For just 1 night, they kept half of the mice awake for 6 hours during their usual sleep time.
The scientists observed the mice carefully and, every time they appeared to be dozing off, they would gently handle or touch them. In this way, they kept them awake without causing undue stress to the animal.
To pick apart the impact of lifestyle factors, for 2 weeks before the study began, all mice were given access to unlimited high-fat food and sugar water; also, the mice had their movement restricted.
This way, the researchers could observe the effect of sleep deprivation in isolation because, whether the mice had slept or not, they were fed similar diets and could not exercise.
Their findings are now published in the American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Immediately after the sleep intervention, the scientists measured glucose levels and fat content in the liver. They found elevated blood glucose in the liver of sleep-deprived rats. These changes were significant after just one 6-hour period of sleep deprivation.
The researchers also measured triglyceride levels in the liver because an increase in production is associated with an increase in insulin resistance, or an inability to process insulin correctly. As expected, in the sleep-deprived rats, levels were elevated.
Also, in the sleep-deprived mice, the investigators measured changes in liver enzymes that are associated with metabolism. The authors believe that these may be the root cause of insulin resistance and buildup of fat in the liver.
The authors conclude that sleep deprivation is, therefore, a risk factor for diabetes, regardless of changes in activity and diet. If this is the case, and further studies back up the findings, ensuring that people with increased diabetes risk have a good sleep routine could be vital.

Malam Abba Kyari, the  Chief of Staff to President Buhari has threatened to sue Saturday Punch over a news story alleging Kyari collected a N29million bribe over a contract.
A statement by Malam Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the President said Kyari has been left with no other option than to seek legal remedy after the newspaper ignored notifications that the story was false.
”They (Punch) should be prepared to face Abba Kyari in court”, Garba said.
Garba in the statement punctured what he called the “improbable and outlandish publication” by the  newspaper.
He said the report was false in its entirety.
”We wish to state with full authority that the allegation is wrong and the Chief of Staff did not have any private meetings with the person making those allegations.
“What is even more surprising is the decision by the newspaper to run the cooked up lies despite obvious loopholes in the story, such as the Bureau of Public Procurement’s denial that a major source for the story was a member of their staff. With a slew of crucial elections ahead, some politicians and their media agents appear to be working together to build pressure on the Buhari administration by wielding non-existent scandals against it.
“We equally note that the supply of 15 Hilux vehicles for the Presidency was an unlikely contract to have been awarded, as it did not exist anywhere in the 2016 and 2017 budgets.
“Checking the appropriation for 2016 and 2017, that request is not even there. How could Abba Kyari have asked for money to award a contract that did not exist anywhere at all?
“In addition to that, the amount allegedly given in bribe was also suspicious, as the office of the presidential aide had been known in the past to receive imprest of 200 million naira and above every month, with no one expected to give account.
“It was only since Abba Kyari occupied that position that things changed.
“In blunt terms, it is difficult to make a case of N29 million bribery against an official who spurned a monthly payment of N200 million to his office, money for which he didn’t need to account to anyone.
“Once again, we wish to caution against the media’s haste to publish unverified accusations against government officials simply for the sensationalism value, without journalists doing the due diligence required of them by their profession.
“The Punch was notified of the various falsehoods contained in the allegations but still went ahead to publish the weak accusations. They should be prepared to face Abba Kyari in court.”

Significant shares of Facebook users in the USA have taken steps in the past year to reframe their relationship with the social media platform, with 26 per cent deleting the app from their phones, according to a survey by the Pew Research Centre.
Forty-two per cent of Facebook users have taken a break from the site in the past year. Just over half of Facebook users ages 18 and older (54%) say they have adjusted their privacy settings in the past 12 months, the survey revealed.
Around four-in-ten (42%) say they have taken a break from checking the platform for a period of several weeks or more, while around a quarter (26%) say they have deleted the Facebook app from their cellphone.
All told, some 74% of Facebook users say they have taken at least one of these three actions in the past year.
The findings come from a survey of U.S. adults conducted May 29-June 11, following revelations that the former consulting firm Cambridge Analytica had collected data on tens of millions of Facebook users without their knowledge.
Facebook has separately faced scrutiny from conservative lawmakers and pundits over allegations that it suppresses conservative voices.
The Centre found that the vast majority of Republicans think that social platforms in general censor political speech they find objectionable. Despite these concerns, the poll found that nearly identical shares of Democrats and Republicans (including political independents who lean toward either party) use Facebook.
Republicans are no more likely than Democrats to have taken a break from Facebook or deleted the app from their phone in the past year.
There are, however, age differences in the share of Facebook users who have recently taken some of these actions.
Most notably, 44% of younger users (those ages 18 to 29) say they have deleted the Facebook app from their phone in the past year, nearly four times the share of users ages 65 and older (12%) who have done so.
Similarly, older users are much less likely to say they have adjusted their Facebook privacy settings in the past 12 months: Only a third of Facebook users 65 and older have done this, compared with 64% of younger users.
In earlier research, Pew Research Centre has found that a larger share of younger than older adults use Facebook. Still, similar shares of older and younger users have taken a break from Facebook for a period of several weeks or more.
In the wake of the revelations about Cambridge Analytica, Facebook updated its privacy settings to make it easier for users to download the data the site had collected about them.
The new survey finds that around one-in-ten Facebook users (9%) have downloaded the personal data about them available on Facebook.
Despite their relatively small size as a share of the Facebook population, these users are highly privacy-conscious. Roughly half of the users who have downloaded their personal data from Facebook (47%) have deleted the app from their cellphone, while 79% have elected to adjust their privacy settings.

Elder statesman, Edwin Clark, says he has forgiven those that invaded his house over alleged stockpiling of firearms.
He made the statement when Sen. Shehu Sani (APC- Kaduna) visited him in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that some policemen on Sept. 4, searched  Clark’s house for alleged firearms.
Clark said he decided to forgive them in the interest of peace and the fact that the Nigeria Police had apologised.
“I have forgotten all that since the Inspector General has apologised to me through a very powerful delegation; I have forgiven them in the interest of Nigeria.
“If I do not, there are people who are very willing to cause trouble and I do not want that to be done in my name.
“I have also appealed to my youths, my children at home who gathered at Yenagoa in Bayelsa, who were very upset to be peaceful,” he said.
Clark added that the incident was aimed at discrediting the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
He said, “coming to search my house was not a problem, but if it was not properly planned, or with an intention, just to embarrass me and the government then there is a concern.
“Whatever you do, if it fails, it affects the government of President Buhari, if it succeeds perhaps it will go on.”
He said it was unthinkable for him at his age and consistent call for peace, to stockpile arms.
He further said it would be unfair and unreasonable to think that a 91-year old man, who had been fighting for peace in the country and had directed youths to lay down arms, to stockpile arms.
“So today at 91, I should be gathering arms in my house,” he said.
The elder statesman said he had written the President, requesting a full investigation into the incident and those behind it, and not to make those that searched his house  scapegoats.
Earlier, Sani said he was in the house to express concern over the incidence.
“I am pleased that the Police have taken action.
“I will call on you as a father to accept the apology of the police and also to do everything possible to work and express your opinion so that advantage should not be taken on this issue.
“You are not an elder statesman for a section of the country. You have fought for the peace  and unity of this country.
“You are a repository of history of this country; you know what happened yesterday you know what is happening today and we will still need you for the future of this country,” Sani said.
The lawmaker cautioned security agents, who in as much as they needed whistle blowers and informants, to be careful with the information they worked with.
He further warned that false information and whistle blowing could be sources of instability and crisis in the country.
“Intelligence agencies and security agencies must do a background check on people who provide information to them so as not to rubbish their image and that of the government.
“I am of the firm believe that as a father, you will take this as simply an act that was done without the full intention of the person in the position of power in Nigeria.
“But I know very well that the need for probe is important so that we do not simply make scapegoats of very few people while those behind it are somewhere in the dark.”
“Your case should be the beginning of an end on the use of false whistle blowers  and false informants to intimidate, harass and rubbish the reputation of innocent Nigerians.
“You have paid the price for the peace and unity of this country and that should be appreciated.
“I have no doubt that it was an intention to rubbish the name of Buhari’s government by this act and to set him against the people who respect him,” he said.

Faced with the reality of the bigwigs presidential aspirants of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), outgoing Ekiti state governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the first to have indicated interest for the office, has dropped his ambition.
He said on Saturday that he has discontinuing his 2019 presidential ambition.
The governor was one of the earliest persons in the country to indicate intention to contest for the nation’s number one position early in the year, in spite of warnings that the party zoned the position to the North.
He dropped the hint on Friday when he received the duo of former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and former minister, Kabir Turaki Taminu, (both presidential aspirants) who came to lobby him and delegates in the state PDP.
He said he had to drop the ambition as mark of sympathy and concern for his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka who lost in the last gubernatorial election in the state.
”I dropped the presidential ambition because of the stolen mandate freely given to my deputy."
”As a good leader, I cannot abandon my loyal deputy whose mandate was stolen by the APC and be pursuing another ambition."
”My posters are there in a room. I am committed to the recovery of the mandate for now more than anything else”, he said."
It is recalled that before now, Fayose had not only opened campaign offices but also came out with retinue of branded vehicles with which to campaign for the presidential slot.
The two visiting presidential aspirants boasted that PDP would regain power in 2019, and urged the Ekiti delegates to consider their candidature so as to make the dream become a reality.

Nigeria and Republic of Niger agreed on a collaboration that would finally put an end to banditry and other elements of criminal activities around the two nations’ borders.
The decision to collaborate was reached on Thursday at a security meeting held in Maladi in Niger.
The meeting was convened to brainstorm and find solutions to security challenges and menace of bandits around their borders.
The one-day security conference, according Brig.-Gen John Agim, the Acting Director Defence Information (DDI) on Friday, was held at Maladi on Thursday.
Agim said the conference reviewed the security situation vis-a-vis existing military operations in the two countries.
According to Agim, the conference is a follow up to similar meeting held in September, 2017 at Diffa also in Niger.
Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, had also in February assured the Republic of Niger of the readiness of Nigeria for partnership to tackle herdsmen/farmers’ conflict.
Dambazau stated this when Nigerian lawmakers paid him a visit on Feb. 9, in Abuja.
Dambazau told the lawmakers that the two countries had close relationship in religion and ethnicity.
“Our relationship is historic; we have very close relationship in ethnicity and religion that it is difficult to know who comes from Nigeria and Niger. We consider ourselves as one family.
