The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it is looking out for underage tanker and truck drivers to prevent accidents on the expressway.
Mr Hyginus Omeje, the FRSC Sector Commander in Lagos State, made this known on Wednesday at the 3rd Quarter overview of 2018 Corporate Strategic Goals and Projection at Sector Command, Ojodu Berger.
According to him, the legal limit for driving in the country is 18 years and above, but that somebody is looking small does not make him below 18 years.
“We are always watching out for underage tanker and truck drivers to prevent crashes on the road, especially on the expressway,” he said.
The FRSC official said that there were downward trends in the crashes involving tankers and articulated vehicles since 2016.
He said that the corps had intensified its patrol to prevent crashes in all the six geopolitical zones in the country.
“It was so serious, particularly in 2016 when we were recording tankers and trucks crashes almost regularly, until the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, flagged off the training and retraining programmes for tanker drivers.
“Since then, the corps has been sensitising them through various programmes to ensure that minimum standards are maintained on the roads,’’ he said.
The sector commander also advised tanker drivers to desist from giving their vehicles to motor boys to drive.
He said that such action could lead to crashes on the roads as some of them have no skills and experiences to drive such vehicles.
Omeje urged truck and tanker drivers to follow rules and regulations of driving articulated vehicles by fixing their speed limit devices.
He also charged them to avoid alcohol intake and shun reckless driving for safety on the road.
Also, Mr Bisi Kazeem, the FRSC Head of Public Education, said that the corps was taking precautionary action following the June 28 tanker explosion at the Otedola Link Bridge on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Kazeem said: “We are charging them to start engaging their members in rigorous traffic training so as to meet minimum safety standards concerning their vehicles.
“It is very important to train and retrain them to enable them to follow the rules and regulations at the same time to meet the road standard concerning their vehicle.”
In his remarks, the National Chairman, NUPENG/PTD, Mr Salmon Oladiti, on behalf of his members, commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives in the fire incident.
Oladiti described the incident as “an unfortunate occurrence’’, saying that members of the NUPENG /PTD have been avoiding such calamities.
According to him, the union has been collaborating with the FRSC and other law enforcement agencies in observing minimum safety standards on the highways.
“All efforts will be put in place to ensure that this kind of disaster does not recur on our roads,” he said.

The School Feeding Field Monitors of a Non-Governmental Organisation, Connecting Gender for Development (COGEN), on Wednesday alleged that teachers are taking the rations meant for pupils in some schools in Kaduna State.
Ms Rachael Musa, one of the monitors said during a Town Hall Meeting on the Federal Government’s Home grown School Feeding Programme in Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government, said the ration do not usually go around.
Musa also said although every child was supposed to be given an egg once week, the eggs do not usually go round because of short supply.
Similarly, Mr Monday John, another monitor alleged that some politicians were collecting money from food vendors on the ground that they were not members of the ruling All Progressive Congress.
John also said that some members of the Peoples Democratic Party have equally stopped their children from eating the food, saying it could be poisoned.
He described the development as serious, and urged those involved to stop the act so as not to sabotage the programme.
Mrs Esther Gushe, Assistant Head Teacher, Aduwan III Primary School, confirmed that eggs were always in short supply in her school.
Mr Yakubu Kyari, the Desk Officer of the programme in the local government, said he receives between 300 and 400 crates of egg weekly instead of the 730 crates for the 177 schools in the area.
Kyari said teachers eating up food meant for pupils have been warned to desist from the act or risk sanction.
COGEN Head of Programmes, Mr Ebenezer Omolekun, told the town hall meeting that findings by the NGO revealed that one egg is being shared for between two to four pupils in 46 schools, while two pupils share juice and biscuit in 26 schools.
He explained that the meeting with the theme, “Together We Can Build Our LGA and Make it More Prosperous” was primarily organised to mobilise communities and stakeholders to monitor the implementation of the school feeding programme.
He explained that COGEN, with support from MacArthur Foundation is tracking the programme in 60 schools, 20 each in Kaura, Jema’a, and Zangon Kataf Local Government Areas.
He said that the goal was to ensure successful implementation of the programme in promoting learning, enrolment, retention and completion of primary schools by pupils.
The official said that similar town hall meetings were organised in Kaura and Zangon Kataf to enlist community support in monitoring the programme.
“What we want is to ensure transparency, accountability and responsiveness by all stakeholders involved in the programme,” Omolekun said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Local Council Mr Peter Averik, commended the NGO for supporting the Federal Government initiative and pledged their support “because the programme is for the benefit of our children and our community.”
Also, Mr Hosea David, District Head of Ambam Kaninkon, commended the NGO for creating the needed awareness on the programme and enlisting their support to ensure success.
420 schools in the state are being tracked by five NGOs with support from Macarthur Foundation.

Customs officials in Kaduna state have intercepted a tanker stacked with various brands of foreign parboiled rice numbering over 1,000 bags.

This arrest comes months after the Federal Government announced of plans to close land borders due to massive smuggling of rice into the country.

The Comptroller of Customs Federal Operation Unit zone ‘B’ Kaduna, Usman Dakingari told journalists on Wednesday that since this announcement, rice smugglers have devised new methods to beat Customs surveillance.

Therefore, the smugglers stacked thousands of bags of 50kg bag rice in petrol tankers to give the impression that what they are carrying are petroleum products.

He noted that the smugglers were arrested after intelligence information and regular surveillance by customs officials in Kaduna State.

Dakingari revealed further that the smugglers have also devised the method of mixing bags of rice inside bags containing grain, adding that this is to give the impression that the bags contain only maize.

The Customs comptroller vowed that he and his men are determined to rid the zone of smugglers. He adviced those who engaged in smuggling to desist from the illegal act or be prepared to face the wrath of the law.

French President Emmanuel Macron has hailed Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and African culture and the resilience of Africans.

Macron who visited the Afrika Shrine on Tuesday night said the Afrobeat legend was more than a musician and called on those present to emulate him.

“Referring to your father, he was not just a musician. He was, as well, a politician. That is the whole meaning,” Macron told Fela’s children and others at the venue.

“He was a politician because he wanted to change the society. So, if I have just one message for young people here in the Shrine tonight: (it’s) yes, politics is important. Yes, be involved.”

The French President had arrived at the Shrine from Abuja where he held talks with President Muhammadu Buhari about terrorism, the economy and other issues affecting the country and African continent.

When he arrived at Shrine, Macron quickly switched into a less formal mood, taking off his suit jacket and tie before announcing the launch of the African Cultural Season and having fun at the live show.

Iconic afrobeat star and Fela’s eldest son Femi Kuti thrilled Macron and other guests with a live performance at the Shrine with the support of fellow African music heavyweights Angelique Kidjo and Youssou N’dour.

Beyond praising African culture, Macron was delighted to be back in Nigeria where served as an intern with the French embassy in 2002. During that stint in Nigeria, Macron had visited the Shrine.

“I’m very happy to be here with you tonight,” he said of his return to the “iconic” venue.

“I discovered Nigeria and a lot of my friends are here. I discovered Nigeria and I discovered Lagos and I discovered the shrine.

“This place is an iconic place and it is a place where the best of music is given. I have to say my main memories about this place are friends, proud people, proud of their culture, proud of their art and music. I have a very different view of Africa than a lot of other people in Europe.”

He called on Nigerians and Africans to “build a new common narrative” on the continent and to continue to move forward.

“You have to recognise the bad and negative pages of this history, but you have to move forward,” he said.

Police have discovered the bodies of 41 persons suspected to be part of bandits terrorising villages in Zamfara State, north-west Nigeria.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Kenneth Ebrimson, confirmed the figure while briefing reporters on Tuesday in Gusau, the state capital.

According to him, police personnel found the men with their throats cut at different locations in the state.

Mr Ebrimson revealed that 18 bodies were discovered in a river on Sunday and 23 others at a forest in the Zurmi area of Zamfara.

He added that four suspects were arrested after the bush area was combed while the police recovered machetes and guns during the search.

The police commissioner disclosed further that the suspects were identified as members of a local vigilante group who decided to embark on a mission of “extra-judicial killings”.

While residents were unable to identify any of the bodies who they said were not resident in the area, the police said they could be members of a group involved in cattle rustling and kidnapping.

Farming and cattle herding communities in Zamfara have for years been terrorised by gangs of cattle thieves and kidnappers who raid villages, steal cows and abduct locals for ransom.

As a hideout, the gangs use the Ruggu forest which straddles Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna states.

The attacks have prompted villagers to form militia groups for protection but they, too, have been accused of taking the law into their own hands and killing suspected bandits.

Those killings attract reprisals from motorcycle-riding criminal gangs, who carry out indiscriminate killings and arson in retaliation.

In April the Nigerian government deployed troops to Zamfara to fight the gangs while the police outlawed the vigilantes to end the tit-for-tat killings. LR News

Nigerian carrier, Air Peace says it will commence four-sector flights on the Lagos-Abuja, Abuja-Owerri, Owerri-Abuja and Abuja-Lagos routes with an historic all female flight and cabin crew members on Thursday.
The airline made the announcement in a statement signed by its Corporate Communications Manager, Mr Chris Iwarah on Wednesday in Lagos.
Iwarah said the development was coming days after Air Peace gave command to Mrs Sinmisola Ajibola, who made history as the airline’s first female captain, who was decorated with her new rank by the airline’s Chairman, Mr Allen Onyema.
He noted that the flight was planned in honour of Ajibola’s achievement, a testament to Air Peace’s avowed commitment to gender equality and promotion of Nigerian women in aviation.
“Although women occupy most of Air Peace’s top positions, Ajibola’s elevation is a great milestone in our effort to build the capacity of women in the cockpit.
“Ajibola, who will be in command of the four-leg flight, will be assisted in the cockpit by Senior First Officer, Quincy Owen,” Iwarah said.
According to him, the all-female crew flight, scheduled to take off from the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at 1.10 p.m. is estimated to arrive to a water salute at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 2.20 p.m.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Ethiopian Airlines had on Dec. 16, 2017 operated its first all female flight from Addis Ababa to Nigeria.
The Boeing 777 aircraft, which was piloted by Amsale Gualu, landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at 1.16 p.m. to the admiration of aviation stakeholders and other dignitaries.

An Igando Customary Court in Lagos on Wednesday dissolved the 10-year marriage between Mrs Florence Anyasi and her husband, Stanley Anyasi, over infidelity.
The court president, Mr Akin Akinniyi, while delivering the judgment said that all efforts to reconcile the couple had failed.
“Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage.
“The court hereby pronounces the marriage between Mrs Florence Anyasi and Mr Stanley Anyasi dissolved today.
“Both of you henceforth cease to be husband and wife, each of you should go on his or her separate ways unmolested.
“The court wishes both of you well in your new journey of life.
“The court grants the custody of the children, age 10, 8, 6 respectively to their mother, the petitioner, pending when they attain the age of 18 years to decide who to stay with.
“The respondent must be responsible for the children’s school fees, medical bills and must be paying N15,000 monthly for the children’s feeding which must be channeled through the court,” Akinniyi ruled.
Stanley was dragged to the court by his wife accusing him of being a chronic womaniser.
The 36-year-old trader told the court that apart from numerous cases of his following women around, her husband used to sneak into their maid’s room to sleep with her.
“My husband is a womaniser, he used to leave me in the bed at night and sneak into my maid’s room. I have caught him severally on my maid’s bed sexually assaulting her.
“A neighbour approached me and told me to warn my husband to desist from asking her daughter to have love affairs with him.
“I once caught him sucking the breasts of my niece, who is a minor and he is also fond of wooing my friends,” she said, as she reeled out her grievances before the court.
The petitioner told the court that her husband had once tried to poison her when he brought food to her which subsequently caused her serious pain and vomiting.
“I was rushed to the hospital by neighbours, when I was diagnosed, it was detected that the food I just ate had been poisoned.”
The mother of three said that her husband equally turned her into a punching bag, beating her at the slightest provocation, and has been calling her thief and prostitute in public.
The estranged woman stressed that her husband was irresponsible and unable to provide food or pay for the education of their children.
She therefore urged the court to dissolve her marriage with Stanley.
The respondent, however, denied all the allegations and in turn accused his wife of adultery, claiming that her lover even bought a car for her.
“In January 2017 she came home with a car of N1 million, when I queried her where she got the car from, she claimed she bought it with her money.
“I strongly disagreed with her because she is only selling foodstuffs and can never afford that kind of a car.”
The 40-year-old businessman said that his wife packed out of their matrimonial home in 2017 without his knowledge.
“I came home from work and discovered that my wife had packed all her belonging out with the children to start living with her lover.
“I called her severally, she refused to pick but she eventually picked my call last January and informed me that our last baby she delivered in May 2017 was not mine that the child belonged to the man she is presently living with.
“Before she even gave birth and packed out of my house, I always received information from people that they saw my wife in hotel with men but I always ignored them.”
Stanley said that he provided food and was paying the school fees of their children.
On the allegation of turning her to a punching bag, Stanley said that he only beat her once when she stabbed him with bottle on his head.
The respondent urged the court to grant his wife’s wish for the dissolution of marriage saying that he too was no longer interested.

Nigeria and France on Tuesday in Abuja signed three agreements worth US$475 million on social amenities and reforestation.
The agreements cover Urban Mobility Improvement Programme of Lagos State, sustainable water supply in Kano city and reforestation in Ogun.
President Muhammadu Buhari and the visiting French President Emmanuel Macron witnessed the signing of the agreements during their bilateral talks held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Lagos agreement involved a letter of intent for the financing of urban mobility improvement project through a loan of 200 million dollars.
The urban mobility project will involve development of eight priority bus corridors connected to the Lagos mass transit network.
In Ogun, a French firm in conjunction with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority is to mobilise from investors about 200 million dollars for land reclamation to correct the massive degradation of arable land being witnessed in the state.
Gov. Ibikunle Amosun, who spoke on the signed agreement, said the project aimed to reforest 108,000 hectares of depleting forest in Ogun.
Amosun, therefore, hailed the signing of the agreement, describing it as very vital to not only addressing climate change challenges and recreating the forest, but also providing employment to the people of the state, among other benefits.
France, through its foreign development agency, Whence Francaise de Development (AFD), will also extend a credit facility of 75 million dollars towards improving water supply in Kano city.
The concessional loan is expected to help Kano State Government ensure more residents of the city have access to drinking water while improving the financial viability of the state water board to increase its revenues.
Addressing newsmen after the signing of the agreements, Buhari and Macron, who addressed a joint press conference at the forecourt of the presidential villa, expressed the readiness of their countries to continue to promote socio-economic interests for the general good of both countries.
The two presidents pledged to increase the cooperation between Nigeria and France in tackling security challenges occasioned by Boko Haram and ISIS jihadists in Nigeria and the Sahel region of Africa.
Macron said he was more concerned about how African governments organised themselves to effectively tackle the challenges posed by terrorists on the continent.
He said: “The main plan is an African plan and France is not the one to solve or fix African situations.
“So what we want to do is that we will intervene and maintain our presence in Africa and Sahel to fight against terrorism, especially in Mali and in the region.
“What is important to me is how the different African governments organise themselves to fight against terrorism and get rid of these people and especially, jihadism. That is why I do promote the G5/Sahel Initiatives.
“As far as we are organised, Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon is also very important, it is Boko Haram. I think first we have to increase the operations and the pressure against these jihadists.
“We can fix the situation in the coming months and obviously France will remain present in Africa for as long as they want it.’’
On his part, Buhari thanked French government for its support and assistance to Nigeria’s efforts in combating insurgency and violent extremism in the country and the Sahel region.
He said already Nigeria had cultivated the culture of friendship with all its neighbours with a view to ensuring security and political stability in the region.
