Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans

Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, counsel for alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans, has petitioned the Police Service Commission, calling for the probe of the policemen who handled the case of his client.

Ogungbeje, in a petition dated October 13, 2017, alleged that members of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, which handled the case, abused their position to extort his client.

According to him, the team of police investigators, led by Mr. Abba Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, “forcefully and corruptly extorted” from Evans cash in local and foreign currency as well as various items including phones, wrist watches, jewellery, television, cars and trucks.

Ogungbeje claimed that the policemen forcefully took N50m from Evans, while his wife was also forced to part with another N5m.

The lawyer claimed that a sum of $10,000, was also forcefully taken from the suspect by the police.

Other items allegedly taken from Evans by the police, according to Ogungbeje, are a Brigade wrist watch, valued at $117; a pendant cross, worth $70,000; a necklace, worth $25,000; a Virtu phone, worth $30,000; a Virtu Signature phone, valued at $17,000; and five pieces of Saphono Ruccu diamond rings worth $100,000.

Ogungbeje also claimed that the policemen also removed and took away the 85 inches Samsung television set, worth N6.5m in Evans’ apartment.

Other items were 25 Mark trucks; a Lexus 470 jeep; a Grand Cherokee jeep; a L400 Mitsubishi Bus and a gold-colour Toyota Highlander jeep.

Apart from Kyari, the other police officers mentioned in Ogungbeje’s petition are ASP Phillip Rieninwa, who was specifically accused of obtaining $10,000 from the kidnap suspect; ASP Sunny Ubua; ASP Emmanuel Ali; Inspector Idowu Haruna; Inspector Egunjobi Segun and “other policemen attached to the IGP Intelligence Response Team.”

The lawyer also alleged that Evans’ girlfriend, one Amaka Offor, “was roundly sexually molested and abused by the above policemen of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team.”

The petition, captioned, “The Evans case and saga: Brazen extortion, corruption, gross misconduct, sexual molestation, and human rights violation against the IGP Intelligence Response Team police officer and policemen,” demanded the probe, sanction and possible dismissal of the accused policemen.

Ogungbeje said in the petition addressed to the Chairman of the Police Service Commission that, “It is very unfortunate that the above-named police officers and policemen could be involved in such gross misconduct and indiscipline in taking advantage of a criminal suspect in their custody to perpetrate high-level extortion, corruption, gross misconduct, indiscipline and sexual molestation.

“Sir, you would agree with us that these allegations are too weighty to be ignored by any right-thinking Nigerian. There is no gainsaying the fact that it calls for prompt investigation, inquiry and appropriate sanctions. We are using this medium as our own way of galvanising institutional sanity, cleansing and reform in the Nigeria Police Force as an institution.

“At this juncture, we do not intend to jump the gun or draw conclusions on these high-wire allegations against the above-mentioned police officers and policemen by our client. We are only calling for prompt investigation or inquiry on all the police officers and policemen involved in this whole saga.

“From the foregoing, we urge you, sir, to constitute a special investigation and enquiry panel to investigate this monumental extortion, corruption, gross misconduct, indiscipline, sexual abuse and Human rights violation against all the police officers and policemen of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team.

“We also demand that you use the auspices of the Police Service Commission as an oversight agency of the Nigeria Police Force to invoke appropriate sanctions including dismissal against the culpable police officers and policemen.

“We have great confidence in your ability to deal with this matter no matter whose ox is gored.”

The petitioned was copied to the Senate President; the Speaker of the House of Representatives; the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission; and Director of Amnesty International.‎

The organised labour on Saturday rejected the resolution of the House of Representatives seeking the upward review of the minimum wage for Nigerian workers to N30,000 from the current N18,000.

The President of the Trade Union Congress, Bobboi Kaigama, told our correspondent on  Saturday that the organised labour is demanding N56,000.

He stated that the labour unions  were awaiting the executive arm of government to set up a committee to speed up the process.

“The procedure is for the tripartite body to sit down and agree on a figure, present it to the National Executive Council, National Council of State and to the National Assembly,” he said.

The Nigerian Labour Congress on its part, commended the recommendation of the House of Representatives but said that the process to determine an approved minimum wage has started with a tripartite engagement involving the labour, the private sector and the government.

The General Secretary of the NLC, Peter Ezon, stated this in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday.

He said the tripartite arrangement would recommend the minimum wage to the government and in turn take it to the National Assembly for legislation.

“We welcome the concerns of the House of Representatives members and we also beg them to put more pressure on government to institute the process of the tripartite committee so that it can be concluded and returned to the National Assembly,” Ezon said.

The NLC scribe said some state governors were struggling to pay the N18,000 minimum wage because they failed to set their priorities right.

He accused the Federal Government of delaying the process of sending the approved new minimum wage to the National Assembly.

He warned that the labour movement was losing patience with the government and might be forced to act appropriately to achieve its demands.

As of the time of filing this report, President of the Trade Union Congress, Bobboi Kaigama, was yet to respond to a request for his union’s reaction.

LR News had reported on Thursday that members of the House of Representatives warned that a nationwide strike by workers over low wages could force the country’s economy back into recession.

The lawmakers therefore urged the Federal Government to increase the current minimum wage to N30,000 to avert workers’ strike.

Former IGP, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie

A police guard was feared killed and another one seriously injured on Saturday night when suspected armed robbers besieged the Katsina residence of former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie.

Our correspondent gathered that the former IGP who was said to be at home during the incident, was not injured during the attack.

SUNDAY PUNCH could not establish whether valuable items were carted away by the gunmen.

Sources said the gunmen arrived the GRA residence on motorcycle about 7pm and shot sporadically at the main gate of the sprawling residence.

They were said to have been repelled by armed policemen guarding the house.

The sources also told our correspondent that it was during the shoot-out that a policeman allegedly died and another got injured.

One of the sources said, ‘’They (the armed robbers) arrived on a motorcycle immediately after Magrib Prayers. They tried to enter but were repelled before they shot at the policemen on duty, and killed one of them”.

The injured policeman, who was reportedly shot on the leg, was said to have been rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Security operatives cordoned off the major road to Coomasie’s house with no fewer than four Hilux pick up vans and several armed policemen preventing access after the attack.

Only those who were able to establish that they were residents of the area were allowed into the street.

When contacted, the spokesman for the Katsina police command, Gambo Isah promised to find out details of the incident and brief our correspondent but he never did as of the time of filing this report.

Lagos CP, Edgal Imohimi

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, says that 6,000 spy police will be incorporated into traffic management in the state.

Imohimi said this while addressing the spy police at the Police Training School, Ikeja, on Saturday.

He noted that he wanted a state where members of the public would spend less time in traffic.

He said that the spy police had not been optimally utilized as he intended to incorporate them into the integrated traffic management of the state to take care of the shortfall of manpower in the police.

“The importance of the supernumerary police called ‘spy police’ is to take care of the shortfall of manpower in the police and also assist in security at private organisations.

“I felt we are not using the spy police optimally. Yes they are doing well at their various organisations but at this trying time, they will be integrated into the traffic management structure of the state.

“First of all, I intend to partner with you for integrated traffic control in the state.

“Though, we have the police traffic officers and the state controlled traffic officers but you will agree with me that Lagos is expanding so there is need for more hands.

“I want a state where we hardly have traffic issues and cases of people disobeying traffic laws.

“I will rather use the spy trained by the police than allow quasi agents take over traffic management in the state, especially on weekends when there are activities.

“I have directed that the 6,000 spy policemen be integrated into the traffic architecture because they cover the length and breadth of the state.” he said.

The CP further enjoined members of the public to give the spy police the needed support in carrying out their duties.

Tony Elumelu

Economist and entrepreneur, Tony Elumelu says the time has come to implement a new development model that would help eradicate poverty in Africa.

He also noted that it is fundamental to help the youth see themselves as the change Africa is looking for and encourage them to lead the campaign against poverty in the continent.

This and other issues of development formed the crux of the two-day forum organised by the Tony Elumelu Foundation in Lagos south-west Nigeria.

“Our youths need jobs, plenty jobs, economic hope. There is so much uncertainty about the future.

“In Africa, we have tried different models to deal with these issues of poverty eradication, job creation and creating economic hope for our people – in fact, we know that we have not made much progress and in some areas we can even say that we have regressed,” Mr Elumelu stressed.

Also according to him, aid inflow into Africa in the past 10 years is a whopping half a trillion dollars, yet the basic human development index has not significantly changed.

He, therefore, stated that the new development model which he referred to as ‘Africapitalism’ is of utmost necessity.

“A development model that embraces shared prosperity and local value addition, long-term investment and also private sector development and ultimately entrepreneurship, is needed.

“Africapitalism is a development model that prioritizes our youth and creates hope for them. It is a bottom-up approach to development; an all-inclusive approach that brings development to everyone; one that creates economic empowerment and one that creates hope for the future.”

Also Speaking at the event, was Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Osinbajo who help similar views.

According to him, the present generation of young Africans represents hope for the continent.

“I’ve always known that this group of individuals, this generation of young people will do the exceptional.

Earlier this month I spoke at the Financial Times Africa Summit on the theme what makes Africa work – here in this room are seated the answer to that question.

“Across Agriculture, ICT, hospitality, fashion, energy, manufacturing and many other fields, the breadth and depth of talent and innovation on display in the current and previous Tony Elumelu entrepreneurship cohorts have shown that there is indeed hope,” the Vice President said.

Surrounded by news cameras and supporters, Lamonte McIntyre hugged his mother Friday for the first time as a free man in 23 years.

The 41-year-old Kansas native was wrongly convicted of a double murder and finally set free after spending more than half of his life behind bars. He was serving two life sentences.

The group Injustice Watch said McIntyre’s first words were: “It’s nice outside.”

McIntyre was originally convicted at the age of 17 on the testimony of witnesses who later recanted. Prosecutors presented no physical evidence or motive to tie him to the 1994 murders.

A judge was reconsidering the case in court hearings that were scheduled to last into next week, when the new prosecutor in the case said Friday in a news release that new information cast doubt on witness identification of McIntyre as the killer, and that a jury might have not convicted him.

“In light of information learned by my office since I began in January,” Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree said, “my office is requesting the Court find that manifest injustice exists.”

The original investigators of the daytime shooting never issued search warrants nor discovered a link between McIntyre and the victims, according to The Washington Post. He was arrested after less than 20 minutes of interviews.

“The investigation was hasty and superficial,” said the Midwest Innocence Project, which helped free McIntyre.
McIntyre has always maintained his innocence.

His mother Rose McIntyre, who was present when he was arrested decades ago, on Friday thanked “everybody who never gave up on my son,” according to the Kansas City Star, which reported that there were many tears in the courtroom when the man was finally freed.

“He (the judge) said, ‘You’re free.’ I almost hit the floor,” The Star quoted Rose McIntyre as saying.

“I want him to feel the sunlight.”

The remains of slain police corporal, Mr. Davis Odudu, in the Navy/Police clash in Cross River State has been laid to rest.

Odudu, a Station Guard at the Akim Police Station on IBB Way in Calabar, was shot alongside his colleague, Corporal Emmanuel Mbang, by some naval ratings on May 30, 2017, after a misunderstanding between a police traffic warden and some navy personal earlier that day.

The naval personnel were alleged to have gone ahead to use a General Purpose Machine Gun to bring down a section of the Akim Police Station and in the process destroyed one police operational vehicle and a private car.

Mr. Bassey Edet, of the Apostolic Messiah Church in Calabar-South, while delivering a sermon during vigil on Friday for the repose of Odudu’s soul, said life was like a dew that fades away within a twinkle of an eye and alluded to James 4:14.

A close colleague of the late Odudu, Mr. Justus Edem, said he was a chorister in this church.

He said,” The whole episode is so sad. I will miss a lot about him because his presence comes with light. He was a lively fellow who has that inspiring spirit.

Wife of the deceased, Mrs. Etido Davis Odudu, said, “I pray God to accept his soul and grant him eternal rest. The police have been supportive so far. He had good relationship with his colleagues while he was alive.”

The corps was taken to Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State where it was laid to rest.

Davido & Tagbo

David Adeleke popularly known as Davido, has released an official statement concerning the controversy in the death of his friend Tagbo Umeike.

Davido was reportedly accused of being involved in the death of his friend Tagbo and his corpse reportedly dumped at the premises of the General Hospital, Lagos Island.

But the singer in his official statement has denied his involvement in the death of his friend.

Acting Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Imohimi Edgar, told reporters at a press briefing on that the result of the investigations carried out by the police contradicted Davido’s claims on the death of his friend.

Recalling how it happened, Edgar said, “On September 3, 2017, at about 0920hrs, the Chief Security Officer of General Hospital, Lagos, one Oparanti Moshood, alleged and alerted the DPO (Lion Building) that an unidentified male was brought in dead (BID) in an ash colour Toyota Camry saloon car with identification number LSD 738 El.

“The victim was alleged to have been brought in by two unidentified males. The DPO Lion Building who raced to the scene was able to identify the victim as one Tagbo Umeike from the international passport found in the victim’s vehicle.

“Shortly, thereafter, you are all aware that one Caroline Danjuma, an actress and the victim’s fiancé, published on her Instagram page that her boyfriend died in the company of friends amongst whom was one David Adeleke, a.k.a Davido.”

The Police Commissioner said he consequently convened a pre-investigation meeting which was attended by family and friends of the deceased, his girlfriend and Davido, as well as the DPO Lion Building and other investigating police officers.

According to him, the meeting confirmed that the deceased had drinks with friends at a bar, including Davido while the bartender who served them the drinks “confirmed that the deceased had as much as 40 tucks of tequila and exhibited clear signs of drunkenness.”

Edgar further said, “The CCTV footage which I called for from the bar also showed that the deceased was quarrelsome and even violent. In that same meeting, Davido confirmed that he left Shisha Bar without the deceased to a nightclub known as DNA in Victoria Island; he stated that he was only informed by some mutual friends of the victim’s death at DNA club.”

He, however, said investigation conducted into the incident revealed that one Tunde Yusufu who supposedly drives Davido’s escort vehicle, accompanied by one Agbaje Olaoye and one Idris Busari – both Davido’s friends, “took the deceased to General Hospital, Lagos Island and abandoned him in his vehicle on the instructions of the singer.”

He also said the CCTV footage at the hospital captured the entire activities and that the vehicle was subsequently recovered from Davido’s residence.

“These new revelations completely debunk Davido’s claims that he did not know how the deceased got to General Hospital, Lagos.

For this reason, I have instructed the DPO Lion Building and the investigating team to again invite Davido and question him in line with these new findings.

“It is our intention to know why the victim was taken to General Hospital, Lagos dumped and those who took him there fled the location without as much as notifying the hospital authorities or reporting to the police; that calls for questioning.
