Murtala Muhammed International Airport
Aviation unions on Wednesday shut down the Murtala Muhammed International Airport II (MMA2) in protest over the sack of their workers.

They alleged that the workers were sacked following their indication of interest to participate in union activities.

The protesting unions are the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE).

The protest has left passengers stranded as those about to catch early morning flights, and also airline officials with businesses in the terminal were denied access into the premises.

The protest also caused heavy vehicular traffic around the airport environment.

According to the management of the airport, the unions have defied court order restraining them from shutting down the airport.

The union executives, however, deny knowledge of any restraining order.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige

The Federal Government has denied entering into an agreement with the organised labour to increase the minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000.

The Labour minister was responding to media reports quoting Wabba on the new minimum wage.
“Such information is not true,” Ngige said.

The Minister said when the committee reconvened on October 5, after the NLC had called off its nationwide strike, “the organised labour came down to N30,000, the organised private sector came down to N25,000”.

Ngige also said the government had to consult with the 36 state governors and after the consultations, the FG proposed N24,000, while governors proposed N20,000.

No fewer than 500 rice farms at Okpotuwari and Ondewari communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa, have been submerged by flood, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Mr Ezekiel Ogbianko, Chairman, Rice Farmers Association in the state, who inspected the submerged farms on Wednesday, called on the federal and state governments to come to the aid of the affected farmers.
At Ondewari, a community leader, Prof. Itimi Godwin, said that the rice farms were ready for harvest before the disaster.
“We need a lot of things, particularly we want the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come and see the level of damage done here.
“As you can see, this is a colossal loss; we are calling on the federal government to come to our aid, as the people here are suffering. We need relief materials such as rice, garri, cement and roofing sheets,” he said.
NAN recalls that NEMA had earlier said that over 150,000 people have been displaced by flood in Bayelsa this year.
The site manager of Ondewari Rice Farm, Mr Fredrick Adam, said the loss was colossal and the farmers would appreciate immediate support from government.
Also, the Paramount Ruler of Okpotuwari Community, Chief Tiger Moses, said that the community was expecting bountiful harvest before the flood.
“As you can see the flood is very disturbing, our crops have been destroyed, fish settlement and plantain farms are also damaged.
“We want the assistance of the federal government and other stakeholders; right now our sources of water have been contaminated,” he added.

APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole

The All Progressives Congress(APC) is consulting its lawyers in its legal department to file a reaction on the eligibility of its candidates to run in Zamfara state in the 2019 election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said in a letter today that the party is not eligible to field candidates for governorship, national assembly and state assembly positions in Zamfara.
The letter signed by Okechukwu Ndeche, the commission`s acting Secretary read: “Failure to Conduct Primaries in Zamfara State Within the Stipulated Time-frame“ .
“ Please refer to the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2019 general elections released by the commission on Jan. 9 2018.
“You would note that from the timetable the conduct of primaries is scheduled to take place between August 18 to Oct 7 2018.
“However, report received from our office in Zamfara state shows that no primaries were conducted by your party in Zamfara, notwithstanding that our officials were fully mobilised and deployed.
“Consequently, based on the provision of Section 87 and 31 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, the commission does not expect that your party will submit names of any candidate from Zamfara state.
“For clarity, our position therefore, is that the APC will not be fielding candidates for the Governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly elections in Zamfara for the 2019 general elections”.
However, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt from an authoritative source in the APC National Secretariat, that the party leadership would contact its legal department before responding on the matter.
The APC National Working Committee (NWC) had on Oct. 5, dissolved the party executives at all levels in Zamfara, after contentious primaries said to have been conducted on Wednesday 3 October and 4 October.
Mr Yekini Nabena, the APC acting National Publicity had said that by the decision, all party executives, at all levels in Zamfara were dissolved.
The dissolved party executives had claimed they conducted primaries on 3 October which picked a Yari anointed candidate, Alhaji Mukhtar Shehu Idris as winner of the governorship primary election, and Yari himself as winner of Zamfara West senatorial ticket, in a primary conducted 4 October. The NWC invalidated the results.
The NWC inaugurated a new committee which attempted to conduct the Governorship and Legislative primaries in the State between Saturday October 6, to Sunday October 7.
The panel failed to conduct the elections because of the threats by Governor Abdulaziz Yari to call out supporters in protest.

Lai Mohammed, centre, flanked by Adeyemi, left and Tony Akiotu, right

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the National Campaign Against Fake News has received a boost from the Social Networking Platform, Facebook, which plans to partner with the Federal Government to check the menace.
The Minister announced the planned cooperation in Abuja on Tuesday when he visited Daar Communications, owners of AIT and Raypower, in furtherance of the campaign.
He said the national campaign, which was launched on 11th July 2018, has succeeded in bringing the phenomenon to the front burner of national discourse.
“We are not under any illusion that our campaign will immediately end the menace of fake news. But we know that by creating national awareness, we are putting the issue of fake news on the front burner.
“Fake news is now a subject of national discourse, workshops and conferences. In the coming days, the social networking web platform, Facebook, will be meeting with us and other top policy makers across the country in the days ahead to see how to assist us in fighting fake news. That, to us, is a major step forward, and we thank all our partners, and indeed all Nigerians, for this achievement,” Alhaji Mohammed said.
The Minister, who described fake news as a global phenomenon, said different countries are adopting various measures to tackle the menace, but said Nigeria has decided to appeal to the sense of responsibility of media practitioners, bloggers and Social Media Influencers, instead of engaging in coercion or censorship.
He said if left unchecked, fake news has the capacity to disrupt the peace and unity of the country and it’s also a clear and present danger to the nation’s democracy.
“For example, the fake news phenomenon played out during the recent governorship elections in Osun State. Whereas 16 PDP members were arrested for various offences, including impersonating observers and for violence during the rerun, the purveyors of fake news made it look as if the APC was the perpetrators of these crimes.
“Also, a few days ago, fake news about the release of Leah Sharibu circulated freely on the social media. Imagine the additional trauma this would have caused for the parents. Imagine the implication on efforts to secure her release, and indeed the national security implications,” Alhaji Mohammed said.
He said the campaign against fake news could not have come at a better time, considering that the 2019 general elections are fast approaching and enemies of democracy will latch on to it to wreak havoc.
The Group Managing Director of Daar Communications Plc, Mr. Tony Akiotu, commended the Minister for embarking on the campaign to minimise the dangers of fake news to the unity and security of the country.
He pledged the readiness of Daar Communications to partner with the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture to check the excesses of fake news.
“Honourable Minister, I will like to assure you that the management and staff of Daar Communications PLC, without reservation, join in the crusade and will be one of your major partners in the campaign against fake news because we don’t have a choice. If we don’t do so, we will be one of the media organizations that will be encumbered and whose existence will be endangered by those who are involved in this ignominious business,” Mr. Akiotu said.
