The Inspector General of Police Idris Ibrahim says the remaining Dapchi student, Leah Sharibu, who was not released along with her classmates is on her way back home.

The IGP confirmed this on Saturday in an interview with journalists at the Military Command and Control Center in Maiduguri where he visited the Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole.

He said he had been scheduled to travel to Dapchi but shelved the trip so as not to jeopardize her release.

Leah was reportedly held back for refusing to denounce her Christian faith while in captivity but the government promised to do everything possible to secure her release just like the rest.

The Yobe state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had also urged the Federal Government to do all it can to secure her release.

110 students (all girls) were abducted from the Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) Dapchi, in Yobe state on February 19, 2018.

However, after negotiations, 104 of them and two other abductees – a boy and a girl, were released on March 21.

Unfortunately, five of the girls were said to have died as a result of the trauma while in captivity.

The freed children were subsequently flown to Abuja where they met with the President, Muhammadu Buhari at the State House.

The President encouraged them to pursue their dreams without fear regardless of the traumatic experience.

He assured them of their security and that efforts are on to also secure the release of the remaining Chibok girls and other Nigerians in captivity of the terrorists.

Furthermore, he noted that the development which he described as “cheering and hearty” signified the commitment of his administration to the security and well-being of all Nigerians.

The President also recalled his visit to Yobe State on Wednesday last week during which he sympathised with the parents, families, and people of the state on the tragic abduction of the students in Dapchi.

He added that he had made a solemn pledge “on my word of honour” that the Federal Government would do everything possible to ensure their unconditional release of the girls.

“We are never in doubt about our focus and direction since the assumption of this administration – security, anti-corruption and revamping of our economy are the main focus of our government,” President Buhari avowed.

Force PRO, Jimoh Moshood

The Nigeria Police Force is threatening to declare Senator Dino Melaye wanted, should he fail to appear at its Kogi command on Wednesday, March 28.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, in a statement issued on Saturday, said an invitation and a court summon had been issued to Senator Melaye, both of which he did not honour.

He said the senator is wanted on grounds of criminal offences of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms.

According to the PRO, Melaye’s summon follows the arrest of two men in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, on January 19, after they confessed to having committed various crimes such as kidnappings and armed robbery.

They also disclosed that the Senator had handed them a bag containing firearms.

The statement read in part: “Working on actionable intelligence, the Kogi State Police Command personnel and operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad trailed and arrested two (2) suspects, namely; KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA “31 YRS” From Dekina LGA but based in Anyagba (Leader of the gang) and NUHU SALISU a.k.a SMALL “25 YRS” (a member of the gang), after a gun battle with the Police team that lasted for some hours on the 19th January, 2018 at Ogojueje in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.

“During investigation, they confessed to the various criminal roles they played in the commission of several kidnappings and Armed Robbery, Murder and other Violent Crimes in different parts of Kogi State for which they have been on the wanted list of the Police for more than two years now.

“The gang leader KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA revealed that he and his gang have been working as a Political Thug for one Alh. Mohammed Audu a Politician in the State and that Alh. Mohammed Audu invited him to Abuja and introduced him to Senator Dino Melaye and they met on Airport road, Abuja inside the Senator Dino Melaye’s Car in the month of December, 2017.

“KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA “31 YRS” further confessed to the Police investigative team that Senator Dino Melaye handed over a bag containing the following firearms one (1) AK47 rifle, two (2) Pump Action guns and the sum of four hundred and thirty thousand naira N430,000.00 to share with his boys.

“The Police conducted investigation into the criminal indictments against Sen. Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu and discovered that the two (2) of them have case to answer. The two (2) suspects namely; KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA and NUHU SALISU a.k.a SMALL were paraded at the Kogi State Command Headquarters, Lokoja on 19th March, 2018.”

Speaking further, Moshood noted that a letter had been sent to the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki on March 2 asking Melaye to appear before the Kogi state police command headquarters to answer to the allegations against him, yet there was no response.

The Police, however, warned him to show up else, he would be arrested.

“As we speak, Sen. Dino Melaye despite the letter sent to the Senate President, refused to honour Police Invitation till date and also refused to appear in court and has also continued to evade the service of criminal summon on him to appear before the Federal High Court, Lokoja on the 28th March, 2018 to answer to the charge of Criminal Conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms against him and Mohammed Audu.

“The Nigeria Police Force is therefore using this medium to advise Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu in their interest to comply with the order of the court and appear on 28th March, 2018 before Federal High Court, Lokoja to answer to the criminal charges against them.

“If they continue to be evasive and fail to comply with criminal summon issued on them by the Federal High Court, Lokoja to appear on 28th March, 2018 to answer to the criminal charges of Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms against them, the Force, will obtain Warrant of Arrest for the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu and will definately declare them wanted throughout the country and on INTERPOL platform for them to be arrested in any country where ever they are sighted and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for continuation of their trial.

“The Nigeria Police Force will continue to sustain the Rule of Law and maintain Law and Order throughout the Country,” the statement read in part.

The Katsina State Government has approved the employment of 1,000 security guards for all boarding secondary schools to secure lives and property of students.
Gov. Aminu Masari disclosed this during the Third Convocation ceremony of  the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina on Saturday.
Masari said that the decision was in view of the prevailing security situation in the country.
“Even though Katsina is considered as one of the most peaceful states in the country, the government is not taking chances to allow students to be vulnerable to attacks by criminals.
“The state government is committed to protection of lives and property of the state’s citizens as well as the students,’’ he said.
The governor recalled that when he assumed office in 2015, he made it clear that his mission was to recover the lost glory of the state in education and agriculture.
He said his administration  equipped existing schools, building new ones, increase the number of enrolment, recruiting qualified teachers and retraining of manpower to make the sector attractive.
“We believe that a learned society that is attune to the demand of its time is a more successful one, that is why we continuously commit a huge percentage of the state budget to the education sector,’’ he said.
Masari disclosed that the state government from January 2018 to date, had awarded contracts for the rehabilitation and upgrading of Government Technical College Mashi at the cost of N277 million.
He added that the government was spending N27.5 million to upgrade Government Day Secondary School, Yanduna in Baure Local Government Area.
“The government also awarded the upgrading of Government Girls Boarding Secondary School, Rogogo in Zango Local Government at N263.1 million and the rehabilitation and upgrading of Government Girls Secondary School, Sandamu at N278.8 million.
“The government also awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of Government Day Secondary School, Tama in Bindawa at N90.1 million,’’ he said.
The governor revealed that the government was doing everything possible to improve the standard of its owned-tertiary institutions.
Masari stated that his administration recently approved the recruitment of both academic and non-academic staff for the Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Katsina, and Isa Kaita College of Education, Dutsin-ma.
The governor urged the management of the university to boost its internally-generated revenue through collaboration with the private sector and corporate bodies that support its course.
“While this administration implores this institution to take alternative sources of revenue seriously, it is committed to providing the support needed to enhance its service delivery.’’
He said the government would continue to release funds to cater for the running cost, such as staff training and development of the university.
NAN reports that 1,397 students graduated from the university, out of which 1,290 bagged first degrees, while 107 got their post-graduate degrees. LR News

Scientists find miracle gel that kills cancer tumours

A groundbreaking research has churned out  a biodegradable gel that has the capacity to kill cancer tumours.
Created by scientists at the Department of Cancer Immunology and Virology Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, the gel was designed to deliver immunotherapy directly to the area from which a cancerous has been surgically removed.
Senior study author Michael Goldberg and colleagues recently reported their results in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
Upon testing the gel on mice during the surgical removal of breast cancer tumours, the scientists found that it not only helped to prevent tumour recurrence at the primary site, but that it also eliminated secondary tumours in the lungs.
Researchers develop a gel that could help to stop cancer recurrence and metastasis.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), more than 1.7 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2018, and over 600,000 people will die from the disease.
The World Health Organisation in a report last year said over 8.8 million cancer deaths are recorded globally yearly, out of which an estimated 80,000 are Nigerians.
WHO estimates that cancer is responsible for almost 1 in 6 deaths globally. More than 14 million people develop cancer every year, and this figure is projected to rise to over 21 million by 2030
According to WHO statistics, over 100,000 Nigerians are diagnosed with cancer annually, and about 80,000 die from the disease, averaging 240 Nigerians every day or 10 Nigerians every hour, dying from cancer.
The Nigerian cancer death ratio of 4 in 5 is one of the worst in the whole world.
The WHO data  also shows that cervical cancer which is virtually 100 percent preventable kills one Nigerian woman every hour, breast cancer kills 40 Nigerians daily while prostate cancer kills 26 Nigerian men daily. These three common cancers alone, kill 90 Nigerians daily.
For cancer that forms as solid tumours — such as breast cancer and lung cancer — surgical removal of the tumour is often the primary treatment option.
However, as Goldberg explains, even when the tumour is removed, some cancer cells may remain at the site. These can form new tumours, or even spread to other areas of the body. This is a process known as metastasis.
“Indeed, while half of all cancer patients undergo surgery aiming to cure the disease, 40 percent of such patients experience a recurrence of the disease within 5 years,” Goldberg notes.
“Furthermore,” he adds, “it has been shown that the body’s natural process of healing the wound created by surgery can actually spur these residual cancer cells to metastasise to distant parts of the body and form new growths.”
Immunotherapy — which involves using drugs to stimulate the immune system and attack cancer cells — can help to prevent cancer recurrence and metastasis. However, the treatment has some serious pitfalls.
A major problem with immunotherapy is that it can attack healthy cells as well as cancerous ones, which can increase a patient’s susceptibility to other illnesses.
“In this study,” notes Goldberg, “we sought to determine whether administering immune-stimulating drugs at the [right] place and the right time — at the site of tumour removal, before the surgical wound has been closed — could enhance the results of cancer immunotherapy.”
The path to ‘immunostimulation’
The researchers explain that when a cancerous tumour is removed, the immune system uses most of its resources to help heal the wound, rather than fighting any cancer cells that may have been left behind.
This can create what the team calls an “immunosuppressive” microenvironment, in which cancer cells can thrive and spread.
As Goldberg explains, the scientists set out to transform this immunosuppressive microenvironment into one that is “immunostimulatory” — that is, one that can attack and destroy residual cancer cells after surgery.
To achieve this feat, the researchers created a hydrogel loaded with drugs that stimulate dendritic cells, which are immune cells that are involved in the initial immune response. They “present” any foreign invaders or diseased cells — such as cancer cells — to T cells, which launch an attack.
The gel — which comprises a sugar naturally present in the human body, making it biodegradable — is placed at the site from which a tumour has been surgically removed. The gel then gradually releases the drugs over a prolonged period, which the team says increases its efficacy.
For their study, Goldberg and team tested the gel in mice that underwent the surgical removal of breast cancer tumours. The team made the decision to use the gel directly after tumour removal, rather than before.
“We reasoned,” Goldberg explains, “that it would be easier to eliminate a small number of residual cancer cells by creating an immunostimulatory environment than it would be to treat an intact primary tumour, which has many means of evading an immune system attack.”
Several months after surgery, the mice treated with the gel were much less likely to experience tumour regrowth, compared with rodents that received conventional immunotherapy delivery.
When the researchers injected breast cancer cells into the side opposite to where the original tumour was removed, the gel-treated rodents showed no signs of tumour formation.
Also, the study found that the gel eradicated secondary tumours in the lungs of the mice — that is, it eliminated lung tumours formed from breast cancer cells that had spread from the primary site.
The researchers also replicated their findings in mice with primary lung cancer and melanoma, which is a deadly form of skin cancer.
Based on their results, Goldberg and colleagues believe that their gel-based immunotherapy could be an effective treatment strategy against a number of different cancers.
“This approach has the potential to deliver immunotherapy in a manner that focuses the therapy at the site of interest during a critical time window,” he says.
We are extremely encouraged by the results of this study and hope that this technology will be adapted for patients for testing in clinical trials in the not-too-distant future,” said Goldberg. LR News

French policeman, Arnaud Beltrame

The French policeman, Arnaud Beltrame, who offered himself as a hostage to help end what President Emmanuel Macron branded an “Islamist terrorist attack” died of his wounds Saturday.
He became the fourth victim of the shooting spree and supermarket siege.
Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame, 45, was among a group of officers who rushed to the scene in the town of Trebes in southwest France on Friday after the attacker, who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group, stormed a supermarket and fired at shoppers and staff.
Beltrame offered to take the place of a woman who was being held as the attacker’s final hostage, according to Interior Minister Gerard Collomb.
The officer was shot and stabbed before anti-terror police moved in to kill the attacker and end the siege.
Macron led tributes to Beltrame, saying he had “died a hero” and deserved “the respect and admiration of the whole nation”.
The national gendarmerie said its flags would fly at half-mast on Saturday in tribute to the slain officer, while a white rose hung on the door of his own base in Carcassonne.
With the death of the officer, the assailant, identified as 25-year-old Radouane Lakdim, killed a total of four people in Trebes and the nearby medieval town of Carcassonne, in France’s first major jihadist attack since October.
The Islamic State group claimed the attack was in response to its call to target Western enemies — as is customary when the assailant has pledged allegiance to the jihadists.
