The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Primary Health Care Development Board says over 900,000 children will be immunised against polio in the first round of 2018 vaccination across the territory.
The Acting Executive Secretary, Dr Mathew Ashikeni told the Latest Reality Metro in an interview in Abuja on Saturday  that adequate personnel had been engaged to carry out the exercise simultaneously across the six area councils in FCT.
He said that his board had received enough Oral Polio Vaccines (OPVs) to ensure that no child under the age of five is left out in the forthcoming exercise which will kick off  on Jan. 20 and end on Jan. 23.
According to him, all necessary arrangement had been made to ensure a smooth conduct of the vaccination.
He appealed to parents and guidance to bring out their children and wards within the age limit for the Immunisation.
The acting executive secretary stated that vaccinators will be going from house to house, in schools, estates, places of worship, on the streets, markets, farmlands, IDPs camps and nomadic settlements.
Ashikeni said that the vaccine is safe and protective as booster doses would provide additional protection to the children.
He enjoined traditional and religious leaders as well as other stakeholders to work with the board as usual in ensuring the success of the exercise in FCT.
LR News reports that in July 2017, the board targeted 750,000 children for immunisation in the Sub National Vaccination Plus Day in the territory.

The Lagos State Government on Saturday announced a total ban on the operations of wheelbarrow and cart pushers in the state, saying that their activities are inimical to maintaining cleanliness in the state.

With the flag off of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI), the government says the continuous activities of cart pushers will pose a threat to the success of the initiative.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Tunji Bello.

Also, according to the statement, investigations had revealed that the cart pushers are responsible for most of the illegal dumping of waste in canals and road medians which causes flooding.

“What the State Government has discovered is that these set of people use the night to perpetrate all sorts of dastardly acts. They dump refuse indiscriminately on the median of major roads and highways.

“They also pose serious security threats because they use those carts to hide arms and ammunition and hide under the guise of carrying refuse to rob unsuspecting residents”, the SSG said.

Furthermore, Bello said the government has finalised plans to ensure that the CLI would cover every area of the state and ensure that refuse is well packed and collected, urging residents to desist from patronising them or risk prosecution.

“The State Government has declared zero tolerance for the activities of cart pushers and wheelbarrow operators. Security agencies in the State have been directed to ensure that those found still operating are arrested and prosecuted according to the State Environmental Laws.

“The law also applies to residents who patronise cart pushers. It is an offence and the state government would not hesitate to enforce the law to put a stop to such practice,” Bello said.

IMN Leader, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky

Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has made his first public appearance in over two years.

El-Zakzaky who is in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), told journalists on Saturday in Abuja that he is alive and well.

He also thanked Nigerians for their prayers, as well as the DSS for allowing him access to his doctors.

“It was severe on me on Monday but subsequently it started subsiding and for the first time at least the security allowed me to see my own Doctors.

“So it was my own doctors who examined me. Before I used to be examined by security doctors, this time I did not agree, and my own doctors came to examine me.

“I am getting better, thanks to all your prayers,” the IMN leader said.

This comes after rumours of his death spread on the social media on Friday.
Despite the ruling of a Federal High Court which ordered his unconditional release in 2016, Mr El-Zakzaky and his wife have remained in detention since December 2015.

Their continued detention has sparked several reactions from his supporters, the government and even human rights lawyer, Femi Falana.

Members of the IMN group also known as Shiites have staged series of processions across the northern states demanding the release of their leaders.

Speaking on the issue, the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Lai Muhammad stated earlier that Mr El-Zakzaky was still being held on the grounds of national security.

He also noted that contrary to reports, the Shiite leader was not in prison, the Department of State Services or police custody but was rather in protective custody with his family.

Also reacting to the issue, Mr Falana in a letter dated November 7 and addressed to the President, demanded the immediate release of El-Zakzaky and his wife since the panel set up to investigate the incident has not recommended that they should be prosecuted indefinitely. LR News

Lagos CP. Edgal Imohimi

When the police division in Elemoro, Ajah, Lagos received a distress call about a suspected kidnap in the area, the divisional officer reportedly instructed his men to immediately create an “artificial gridlock”.

Latest Reality Metro was told that an alert had reached the officer, Mohammed Limawa, a superintendent of police, about a woman screaming in the back of a dark blue Golf 3 car along the road in Elemoro on Wednesday.

According to the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Chike Oti, Limawa received the alert from a female caller who also gave the registration number of the car as KRD 845 EC.

He said, “The DPO quickly alerted one of the anti-crime patrol teams along the route taken by the kidnappers and instructed the policemen to slow down traffic to about 20km per hour.

“The hoodlums ran into the gridlock and were arrested by the policemen who were waiting for them at about 9.43pm. The victim was rescued and taken to the hospital to treat an injury inflicted on her forehead with the butt of a locally made pistol.”

The suspects, Igwe Sunday (28) and Chukwuemeka Bright (21), have been handed over to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation.

The victim was identified as Mrs. Mildred Mbajiorgu.

Oti ascribed the swift arrest of the suspects to the new security network put in place by the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi.

“The CP wishes to use this opportunity to warn criminals and would-be criminals that Lagos is too hot for them. They should learn from the fate of those who had tried his resolve to get rid of criminals in Lagos,” he said.

A team of policemen and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, have discovered a hideout suspected to be a den of ritual killers at Bolurunduro area of Ilesa in Osun State.

Our correspondent learnt that heavily armed security agents, acting on a tip off, stormed the den just before noon on Friday and arrested some suspects including a herbalist. Also recovered were the suspects’ tools used at the den which looked like a shrine.

A source told our correspondent that an okada rider, who escaped being kidnapped by the group, alerted the security agents who then raided the shrine.

Arrested were a 40-year-old herbalist, Kayode Olaniyi; Sunday Ojo, 30, and Kayode Ezekiel, 35.

The Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in Osun State, Mr. Babawale Afolabi, who confirmed the arrest to our correspondent on the telephone, said officers of the agency carried out the operation in collaboration with some policemen.

The NSCDC PRO said, “ An okada rider, who said he escaped being kidnapped by the gang, reported to our office in Ilesa that some criminals were using a building at Odi Olowo, Bolorunduro area of Ilesa for ritual purposes.

“Our men along with some armed policemen went to the building and arrested three men at the shrine. Their telephone sets were also seized and the suspects were taken to the police station for further investigation.

“We want to advise the people of the state to be vigilant and conscious of happenings in their environment. They should also feel free to alert us or other security agencies of any suspicious movement in their areas. This will help us to make the state safer and make it a no go area for criminals.”

It would be recalled that security agents discovered some shrines in the state in 2017 and also arrested some suspected ritual killers that killed a student of the Osun State University.

BON Chairman, Mr John Momoh

The Chairman of Channels Media Group, Mr John Momoh, has raised concerns about the role of social media and the phenomenon of fake news in the Nigerian media landscape.

Speaking on what the future holds for Nigerian Media, he said creative ideas can be transformed into innovative media products.

Mr Momoh, who is also the Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), said this on Friday in Lagos while addressing senior editors at the Nigerian Guild of Editors Retreat held in collaboration with the United States Mission in Nigeria.

“The subject matter at this retreat is so appropriate. What does the future hold for the Nigerian Media? How do we transform creative ideas into innovative media products? How do we leverage International Partnerships for profitability?

“For those of us who’ve been in the broadcast industry for a decade or more, we know what we mean, when we say the industry has digitally disrupted. Today, new markets are being created, with a new set of values that now threaten existing markets,” he said.

Just as the 2019 Elections is approaching, Mr Momoh said the use of social media gives a lot of concern because of the ease of spread of fake news online.

He said: “Social media, blogs and the ‘fake news’ phenomenon have all thrown the media in a precarious position. Those of us who still believe in the civic value of good journalism has been left in a quandary, as politicians are having a field day, taking a cue from the U.S. President Trump and lambasting journalists for false reportage and balance.

“These aren’t the best times for journalists. social media, which many had hoped will be a saviour with its open access and extensive reach, has actually compounded the problem, by rewarding speed and sensation, over accuracy.”

He said both broadcast and print media are faced with the challenge of unprofessional reducing the quality of information disseminated.

“The broadcaster now faces the endemic challenge of unprofessional activities of some content producers, who create content that does not meet the minimum requirement of the objectives of the mass media – educating, informing and entertaining; all in the drive to wrongly influence the society.

“Newspapers are trying to adjust to the times by creating websites of their own, but that also leads to the decline in their print readership since they now put all of their content online for free. A pointer to the fact that newspapers of the future will mainly take digital form.”

Mr Momoh said the future of both the print journalism and broadcast journalism is, however, a world that would be dominated by three hugely disruptive forces – predictive content, virtual reality and the eradication of language barriers.

According to him, technology can be exploited for media excellence.

“A lot of collaborative opportunities abound and we can share knowledge, share experience, expertise, creativity, culture and other resources across geographic and media boundaries,” he said.

“It’s a new world of media, and it is ready for us. And if used properly, it should inspire and influence, not just entertain and inform.”

Other dignitaries at the event include US Consul General, John Bray, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmud Yakubu, Professor Lai Osho, Funke Egbemode, and Mr Jiti Ogunye, among others.
