73 cows were killed while 18 other cows were injured in an early morning attack on Yamadaga village, Kadarko community in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State by suspected cattle rustlers.

The cattle rustlers invaded Kadarko community around 4:00 am on Sunday, January 29 shooting into the air. They were reported to have kidnapped two persons, chasing other cows into the bush in the process.

The victims of the attack who were mostly herdsmen claimed that the masterminds of the attack were Tiv farmers and that it was a reprisal attack.

Ahmed Abdullahi one of the cow owners said the rustlers unleashed mayhem when the villagers were asleep.

“I was sleeping and then I heard bullet sound everywhere, I didn’t see anybody but they killed my 73 cows, some of them were dispersed into the bush and I haven’t seen two of my children,” he said.

A chief in the village, Ardo of Yamadaga, Husseini Adamu, said the attackers were numbering close to 1,000 and they struck welding various dangerous weapons.

“In the morning around 6:00 am, our children saw some Tiv people numbering up to 1,000 holding sophisticated weapons. They killed some cattle, went away with many.

“They even took motorcycles. Before I came, the place was already in chaos and we realised that at a spot they have killed 73 cows excluding the ones that they carted away with and also they went with two of our children,” he said.

Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Bello, confirmed the report of the attack to Latest Reality Metro. He said investigations are on to unravel the identity of the attackers.

Astronauts need to survive in space by all means

(Xinhua/LR News) Scientists have found a potential food source for astronauts, using microbes to convert human waste into Marmite-like food, local media reported.

This is contained in their study published in the quarterly scientific journal Life Sciences in Space Research by Professor of Geosciences, Christopher House and Director of the Penn State Astrobiology Research Centre.

According to British online newspaper, The Independent, researchers at Pennsylvania State University outlined a method to break down solid and liquid waste for producing protein and fat-rich substance from human waste.

“We envisioned and tested the concept of simultaneously treating astronauts’ waste with microbes while producing a biomass that is edible either directly or indirectly, depending on safety concerns,” they said.

“It’s a little strange, but the concept would be a little bit like Marmite or Vegemite, where you’re eating a smear of microbial goo,” the professor added.

Food supply is a major hurdle when planning lengthy space flights.

Recycling waste into nutritious food is one solution to this problem.

According to House and his colleagues, the method involves anaerobic digestion, a process that refers to the breakdown of materials in the absence of oxygen.

It is considered an efficient way of breaking down biodegradable matter.

The researcher said while their method is not ready for application yet, it provides a new model for creating food on board spacecraft.

“Imagine if someone were to fine-tune our system so that you could get 85 per cent of the carbon and nitrogen back from waste into protein without having to use hydroponics or artificial light,” said House.

A driver was stopped by police in Germany after officers spotted a cockerel riding shotgun beside her.
The fully-grown male chicken was sitting in the front passenger’s seat and wearing a seatbelt, police reported in a statement on Monday.
Motorway patrol officers let the woman continue on her journey because her feathered friend was safely secured in accordance with the rules of the road, the police said.
Sitting in the back were two German shepherds, also securely strapped in.
The 30-year-old woman from the Netherlands explained to officers that she was on a Sunday road trip and never went travelling without her pets.
Police conducted the check near the town of Frankenthal on the autobahn 61, which runs from Germany’s border with the Netherlands to the south-east.
“We’ve never had a case like this before,” a spokesman said.(dpa/LR News)

A Pentecostal Pastor, Bernard Towoju has urged an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Abosede, for allegedly using her private part to invoke curses on him.
Towoju, 53, said in his divorce petition on Monday that “I cannot continue to make love with a woman who always goes naked and swears for me with her private part”.
According to him, Abosede is stubborn, wayward and troublesome.
“She once came to my office to fight me and tore my clothes in the presence of my colleagues. We fight on daily basis and hurt each other a lot.
“We always land in the police station after our fight, in fact, we are regular customers at the station,’’ he said.
The petitioner accused his wife of threatening his life, adding that his wife always hit him with dangerous weapons whenever they quarreled.
“I had to run away from the house I built 10 years ago to rent an apartment for safety.
“She chased me with cutlass, bottles and sticks; our neighbours can testify to that.
“I am afraid, I cannot sleep under the same roof with her with my two eyes closed,” he said.
He begged the court to dissolve the marriage that the love he once had for her had faded and he could no longer tolerate her ill-nature and troubles.
The respondent, Abosede, a fashion designer, accused her husband of calling her a witch.
“He said everywhere he went for solution to his problems, they always tell him that I am behind his predicament.
“My hands are clean; I know nothing about his woes.
“Towoju abandoned me and the children 10 years ago, I have been taking care of the children,” the 46-year-old woman added.
The mother of four urged the court not to grant her husband’s request for the dissolution of the marriage, saying “I still love him”.
In his judgment, the court President, Mr Akin Akinniyi, said the petitioner was adamant despite all mediation from the court and family.
“Since the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions, the court has no choice than to dissolve the union in spite of the fact that the wife still claims she loves her husband.
“The court pronounced the marriage between Pastor Bernard Towoju and Mrs Abosede Towoju dissolved today, both parties henceforth ceased to be husband and wife.
“Both are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation,” Akinniyi ruled.

Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Turkish police detained 311 people over social media posts related to Turkey’s military operation in a Kurdish-held enclave in northern Syria, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Monday.
The report cited the Interior Minister, Suleyman Soyl, saying  those detained were accused of spreading terrorist propaganda.
Turkey’s operation was launched last Saturday against the Kurdish YPG militia.Ankara considers the group a terrorist organisation.
There have been reports of detentions since the onset of the military operation, including journalists critical of the government’s military moves, though some have since been released.
Also detained were members of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
The HDP, meanwhile, said on Monday its offices in the Pendik district of Istanbul were attacked and set on fire by unknown people. (dpa/LR News)

Minister of Defence, Brig. Gen. Munir Dan-Ali (retd.).

A pro-democracy group, Human Right Writers Association of Nigeria has blamed the imbalance in the composition of the National Defence Council for the pro-killer herdsmen comments made by the Minister of Defence, Brig. Gen. Munir Dan-Ali (retd.).

The National Coordinator of the group, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said this in Abuja, on Sunday.

He was reacting to Dan-Ali’s comments about the immediate and remote causes of attacks on farming communities by suspected armed herdsmen.

Dan-Ali was quoted as saying “You see, whenever a crisis happens at any time, there are remote and immediate causes. Since the nation’s independence, we know there used to be routes whereby the cattle rearers took because they are all over the nation.

“You go to Bayelsa, Ogun, you will see them. If those routes are blocked, what do you expect will happen?

“These people are Nigerians. It is just like going to block the shoreline; does that make sense to you? These are the remote causes of the crisis. But the immediate cause is the grazing law.”

Onwubiko, however, expressed HURIWA’s disappointment with the minister’s position which he said was akin to providing subtle justification for the criminal attacks by suspected armed herdsmen on farming communities.

The association  noted  that Dan-Ali’s simplistic assessment which reduced the problem to the proliferation of anti-open grazing laws in different states of the federation and blockade of grazing routes were responsible for the killings by herdsmen  was to say the least “unpatriotic and unbecoming of a statesman.”

HURIWA equally noted that it appeared that those at the helm of affairs were pampering the suspected armed herdsmen because of some ethno-religious affiliations with heads of internal security agencies under President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group urged President Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, respect the provisions of the Nigerian constitution with regards to the federal character principle by immediately reconstituting the national security team to reflect Nigeria’s diversity.

Specifically, the group quoted Section 42 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) to buttress its point.

Onwubiko said, “HURIWA insists that the lopsided domination of the security forces by Hausa/Fulani ethnicity is a grave breach of the extant provision as cited above even as the selective appointments of persons from one section of Nigeria amounted to discrimination which is absolutely illegal and unconstitutional.

“Nigerians expect the holder of the high office of Defence minister to be patriotic enough to denounce blood-cuddling terror attacks orchestrated  by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen, but what has come out from the meeting of President Buhari’s security council as relayed by the Defence minister shows that the current administration has no intention to arrest, prosecute and where possible punish the perpetrators of the killings in Benue, Southern Kaduna, Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa and Enugu states.”

The group urged the President Buhari-led administration to rise up to its responsibility of protecting the lives and property of Nigerians irrespective of ethno-religious bias or political affiliation.

The Benue State Universal Education Board has said that at least 10, 000 pupils have been forced out of schools in two local government areas of the state which came under attack by gunmen on New Year’s Day.

The chairman of the board, Rev. Philip Tachin, on Sunday in Makurdi said many schools were affected as many families fled their homes alongside the children to different camps following the invasion of Guma and Logo LGAs of the state by gunmen.

Tachin lamented that the situation had posed a setback for the board which recently embarked on massive campaign for increased enrolment of pupils into public primary schools in the state at the commencement of the new academic session few months ago.

He said it was disheartening to see hundreds of school children forced out of school due to the invasion by suspected herders of some communities in the Guma and Logo areas when he paid a visit to the camp few days ago to donate relief materials.

Tachin said, “The Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency gave me staggering statistics of children numbering 2,050 who are locked up in this camp in Gbajimba. Apart from these children from the rural areas that have been camped here, the primary school in Gbajimba has also been shut down in order to accommodate the refugees since there are no enough IDP camps.

“This is the multiplier effect of this genocidal operation. There are six IDP camps in these two affected local government areas and if the statistics of these schoolchildren are the same across the IDPs camps, over 10,000 children have been forced out of school.”

According to him, the development was antithetical to the Universal Basic Education Commission’s intensive effort to mop up out-of-school children in the state.

Tachin expressed worry that the gunmen who, he said, had no value for education were on a mission to destroy education, adding that, if the Federal Government was not decisive in putting a stop to the killings, then its efforts in education would be a mere waste of resources.

“Many schools have been affected, though we have yet to ascertain whether school buildings have been destroyed the same way they do to houses in villages. We met one of the cops that were attacked by the armed herdsmen and he confirmed that they were Fulani herdsmen.

“They were heavily armed and were among their cattle. The Federal Government should be honest by not playing politics with this serious security problem because it is capable of leading to a conflagration. We want one Nigeria and we shouldn’t be pushed to having a divided country,” Tachin said.
