ACP Abayomi Shogunle

The Police have challenged those leading the #EndSARS campaign to go to court with their claims as well as show proof of the complaints against officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Shogunle, said this during an exclusive interview with Channels Television on Friday.

According to him, the #EndSars campaigners have failed to take their complaints to court simply because they don’t have evidence to tender.

“Courts are still working in Nigeria, how many of such cases have you taken to the court for redress,” he questioned.

“Some have done that and in some cases, the court has awarded damages that the police should pay while the court has thrown out some other cases, having lacked merit.

“So, if you have any issue with the police, you can completely disregard reporting to the police and go straight to the court.
“Why are people not going to the courts? because they don’t have evidence or the facts they will use to pursue their cases,” he said.

Speaking further, the Assistant Commissioner of Police said there is a proper structure in place in the police, to address criminal cases, especially those involving SARS officials.

“There is a Commissioner of Police, here in the Force Headquarters who is in charge of SARS operations nationwide and the Commissioner of Police reports to the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations and every state command has officers in charge of SARS.

“Some of them are Assistant Commissioners of Police, others are chief superintendents so that’s the structure.

“Once there is any case, they are given directives, they look into it and they carry out their investigation”.

Furthermore, the ACP stated that most complaints of alleged SARS harassment come from Lagos State.

He said, “Maybe it’s because more people in Lagos have more access to internet facilities than other people in Nigeria or maybe because of the high commercial activities in Lagos or maybe because most of the online media platforms are based in Lagos”.

He also took a swipe at Lawyers, saying that some of them, rather than show up in courts, have become more active on social media.

According to him, some of them will rather complain about the issues online than take concrete action where necessary.

He, however, stressed that for any case to be taken seriously they should be taken to court.

“Unfortunately, Nigerian lawyers are more active on social media than they should be active in courts

“You see a lawyer tweeting about violence on social media where he can actually do a pro-bono case because part of the things they will use in giving you a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), is that you must have done some cases for people free of charge, instead of charge.

“Instead of young lawyers going to court to pursue a career or to improve on their profession by taking such cases to court if you believe it is a case, they will rather prefer to come to social media and be typing all sorts.

“The courts are there and thank God they are working.

“The judiciary is completely independent of the executive arm of government so the fact that people are not going to courts, I think should be enough reason for us not to take them seriously.”

The #EndSARS campaign gained momentum last year (2017) when several Nigerian celebrities joined their voices with that of citizens voicing their complaints on social media.

Some key people who joined the campaign included the co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls group, Mrs Obiageli Ezekwesili, Television and entertainment stars, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Don Jazzy, Simi, among others.

The police in Kaduna State have arrested 42 members of Islamic Movement of Nigerian (IMN) in connection with the murder of a police officer, who was killed while discharging his lawful duty in the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, Mukhtar Aliyu, on Friday confirmed the arrest of the members of the group, popularly known as Shiites.

He noted that the suspects will be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.

The arrest of the 42 Shiite members comes after the clash between police officers and the Shiite members in Kaduna city, on Thursday.

The police officer was allegedly attacked while walking along the road when the security agents were trying to maintain peace and order in the city.

Aliyu said the Shiite members attacked the police officer and then stabbed him with knives and stones until he gave up the ghost on the spot.

The incident comes shortly after El-Zakzaky and his wife, appeared before the Kaduna State High Court on the same day.

El-Zakzaky and his wife were arraigned by the state government on eight counts bordering on alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disturbance of public peace among other allegations.

The Shiite members in protest assembled along the Ahmadu Bello Way, in Kaduna state capital with placards bearing different inscriptions demanding the release of their leader. The police attempt to disperse them, however, turned violent with a police officer eventually killed

However, calm has returned to Kaduna State capital after the clash between members of the Shiite members and the police.

As at Friday morning, traders and others who had earlier closed their shops on Thursday opened for business.

Although everywhere is calm, policemen and other security operatives have been positioned at strategic locations and flashpoints to avert any further breakdown of law and order.

L-R) Nigeria’s forward Ahmed Musa, Nigeria’s goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Nigeria’s midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo celebrate at the end of the match

Ahmed Musa struck twice to become the first Nigerian to score at two World Cups Friday as the Super Eagles secured a crucial 2-0 win over Iceland, who missed a penalty.

The African side will secure a spot in the knockout stage if they beat Argentina on Tuesday in Group D’s final round of fixtures.

A draw would be enough to eliminate the Argentines but would leave Nigeria’s fate hinging on the outcome of Iceland’s game against Croatia.

Musa, who came into the starting line-up in place of Alex Iwobi, announced himself with two of the goals of the tournament so far.

Musa’s sweetly struck half-volley fired Nigeria into the lead just after half-time before he added a second with 15 minutes to go to make the Group D game safe.

Iceland got a lifeline in the 82nd minute with a VAR-awarded penalty but dead-ball specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson blazed over the bar.

With Croatia heading the group on six points Nigeria knew a second defeat would mean elimination and Iceland started brightest after coach Heimir Hallgrimsson changed to a 4-4-2 from the 4-5-1 he had used in the 1-1 draw with Argentina.

Alfred Finnbogason, who scored the equaliser against Argentina as a lone striker, was joined up front by Jon Bodvarsson and the pair quickly made an impact.

Captain Aron Gunnarsson launched a long throw into the box and, after Bodvarsson had made a nuisance of himself, a push gave Iceland a free-kick just outside the area.

– Unstoppable half-volley –

Gylfi Sigurdsson struck it smoothly round the wall but 19-year-old goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was able to make the save high to his right.

Nigeria, with captain John Obi Mikel sitting deeper in midfield than against Croatia, slowly worked their way into the game with Victor Moses a constant threat on the right flank.

The pace inevitably dropped with the temperature still a stifling 31 Celsius at the 6:00 pm (1500 GMT) local time kickoff.

The match became a stalemate until 10 minutes before half-time when Iceland came close to opening the scoring but Leon Balogun’s glancing header just did enough to thwart Gylfi Sigurdsson and Birkir Bjarnason lurking at the back post.

And on the stroke of half-time Finnbogason came within a whisker of doubling his World Cup tally when he flashed wide Gylfi Sigurdsson’s whipped in free-kick.

Gernot Rohr brought on wing back Tyronne Ebuehi for Bryan Idowu at the start of the second half and Nigeria came out full of running.
Musa jubilating after scoring his first goal

The tireless Moses was released down the right and his cross was met by Musa who teed up the ball deftly with the outside of his right foot before unleashing an unstoppable half-volley into the roof of the net.

As he wheeled away in celebration his knee caught Ragnar Sigurdsson in the back of the head and the Iceland defender needed treatment, a bandage and a change of shirt after sustaining a nasty cut.

Wilfred Ndidi forced Hannes Halldorsson into a fine fingertip save with a wickedly dipping shot from distance in the 58th minute.

Musa made the game safe with his second, controlling a long ball without breaking stride and beating Kari Arnason before rounding Halldorsson and powering his shot past two covering defenders on the line. LR News

The bloody protests by civilians in the mining town of Faraba Banta have forced Gambia’s Inspector General of Police, Mr. Landing Kinteh, to resign.
IGP Kinteh reportedly tendered his resignation to President Adama Barrow on Thursday.
His resignation was particularly ignited as questions are asked about who gave the orders to shoot at the demonstrators when they took to the streets.
They took to the streets to protest sand mining operations in the town, located 50 km south of the capital Banjul.
Kinteh and Interior minister Ebrima Mballow had denied giving instructions to shoot at protesters, causing confusion over where the order to use live ammunition to deal with the protesters had emanated from.
Two protesters had died on the spot while a third succumbed to gunshot wounds on Wednesday, 48 hours after live bullets were used to deal with the protest.
At least five police officers fingered in the shootings have been arrested, according to President Barrow’s office which has set up a panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
There were violent scenes in Faraba Banta where a detachment of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) battled with protesters who descended on the streets, demanding a stop to sand mining activities in the town.
Residents say such operations which began last year, threaten their rice fields and could cause environmental degradation in this largely agrarian community.
In the aftermath of the clashes, President Barrow has issued a directive suspending all mining activities in The Gambia until further notice.
The Gambian leader who urged calm, visited the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul where some protesters and police officers injured in the clashes are admitted.

Dog meat for sale in China’s Yulin

As South Korea moves closer to banning dog meat, diners tuck into bowls of stewed canine in southern China, where activists are rethinking their tactics to counter a notorious festival that butchers thousands of dogs.
The annual Yulin dog meat celebration opened without a hitch on Thursday, on the day after a South Korean court announced it had ruled that the slaughtering of dogs for meat was illegal.
Activists say the ruling could pave the way for the outlawing of dog meat consumption in South Korea, but there is less progress in China where advocates fear their tactics have been counterproductive.
Eating dog to mark the summer solstice is a tradition in China’s Guangxi region, where the festival has been held since 2009 to mark the occasion in the town of Yulin.
Despite rumours last year that Yulin authorities would ban dog meat sales altogether, many restaurants advertised the controversial offering this week with the veiled moniker of “fragrant meat”. Carcasses were on display for purchase in the city’s open-air markets — though there were fewer of them than in previous years, locals said.
The Dongkou wet market downtown bustled with shoppers meandering past piles of dogs laid out atop butcher stalls for them to inspect. Others hung from hooks, their faces locked in a rigid grimace. Market workers pulled in cartfuls of dead dogs while sweaty men blow-torched the fresher carcasses to remove any remaining fur.
On the street, a man transported two live mutts in a cage on the back of his scooter. As police patrolled outside the market premises, one woman bought a full dog for 662 yuan ($102), saying she would eat it with her family to celebrate the summer solstice.
“It’s very tasty,” another local surnamed Chen told AFP, insisting “they’re all strays — strays and pets are different”.
Chen did not consider it cruel to consume the meat during what the Chinese zodiac system deems the Year of the Dog, quipping: “don’t you eat chicken in the year of the rooster, and pork in the year of the pig?”
But vendors were more discreet than usual. They cooked in narrow alleys or inside their restaurants instead of preparing dog dishes in front of patrons, ushering diners inside and not serving outdoors.
Thousands of dogs are butchered during the event, the animal protection organisation Humane Society International estimates — a fraction of the more than 10 million consumed each year in China.
Animal rights activists have typically attended the festival to purchase ill-fated dogs and save them from slaughter, said Qiao Wei, an activist from the Si Chuna Qiming Animal Protection Centre.
But now they feel that working to establish a general ban on the dog meat trade would be much more effective.
“We have no hope that we can bring change just by going to Yulin,” he said. Simply buying dogs “doesn’t help”.
International animal rights groups concur, saying that focusing so intensively on dog meat consumption in just one city at an annual event risks becoming counterproductive.
“It would be far better to have a holistic campaign that works collaboratively across the country, engaging the government and public to acknowledge animals as our friends, not food,” said Jill Robinson, founder of the Hong Kong-based Animals Asia Foundation.
Chinese leader Mao Zedong had banned dog ownership for being bourgeois, but the ranks of China’s rising middle-class are now full of proud and loving dog owners.
This year, the foundation set up an online portal where Chinese citizens can report restaurants that operate illegally. Tipsters have already flagged some 1,300 restaurants in 153 cities, with over 200 of them shut down, forced to stop selling the meat, or issued warnings, said Robinson.
Before the festival, animal protection groups from around the world submitted a letter with 235,000 signatures to Beijing, calling for the event’s abolishment.
The tide appears to be turning against dog meat consumption elsewhere in Asia, and Chinese animal lovers like Zhang Huahua, a 62-year-old retired lecturer-turned-activist, sense change is in the air.
Zhang came to Yulin all the way from her home in the southern province of Guangdong to submit a letter with recommendations to the local government. Her hope is to save dog lives by changing the system itself.
In South Korea, where one million dogs are believed to be eaten annually, a court ruled that meat consumption was not legitimate grounds for killing canines, after an animal rights group accused a dog farm operator of slaughtering dogs “without proper reasons” and violating building and hygiene regulations.
Last April, Taiwan banned the consumption, purchase and possession of both dog and cat meat, with offenders facing a fine of up to Tw$250,000 ($8,170). AFP/LR News

The Vikings of Iceland that held Argentina to a draw in the first game of Group D in the FIFA World Cup in Russia, will have it tougher with Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the crunch match starting at 4pm today.
Chief Segun Odegbami, former Nigeria international, who held a pep talk with the Nigerian team in Volgograd on Thursday made the prediction in a post on Facebook.
Super Eagles will fight, said Odegbami about his impressions of the team that lost to Croatia 2-0 in their first game.
“I saw their spirit. They will fight like they have never fought before. When we parted to go and watch the Argentinian match on TV, both my Head and my Heart were in sync about expectations tomorrow – Iceland are in trouble”, wrote Odegbami.

`’I am in Volgograd. I have just finished watching the final chapter of an unfolding drama in Group D of the World Cup. It is curtains for Argentina, because I do not see how they will survive their last match against Nigeria.
“It was a rare privilege earlier this evening when, at the instance of Amaju Pinnick, I was given the rare privilege to address members of the Super Eagles at their dinner table, the only person to do so on the eve of their greatest challenge when they confront the Vikings of Iceland with all the pent up ‘anger’, energy, determination and motivation from the Croatian match.
“It was a spirit lifting meeting that we had. I simply reminded them of their responsibility to ensure that they displayed the full version of the Nigerian do-or-die spirit. I reminded them also about their responsibility to the ordinary Nigerian on the street that is with them unconditionally foŕ as long as they give their best. I reminded them of their assured place in history if they could rise above the disappointment of their first match, win tomorrow and convert this moment of their greatest challenge into the moment of their greatest triumph.
“I gave them the good wishes of all Nigerians and prayed with them for favour from the elements. It was a small contribution to their already bulging enthusiasm and confidence.
“I saw their spirit. They will fight like they have never fought before. When we parted to go and watch the Argentinian match on TV, both my Head and my Heart were in sync about expectations tomorrow – Iceland are in trouble”. LR News

A 13-year-old pupil of Community Primary School, Ajowa, in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Umar Saliu, has been killed by a stray bullet from a soldier maintaining peace at a troubled border town in the state.

The deceased, according to his father, was returning from school when he was hit by the bullet, which killed him instantly.

Tension mounted in the community following the incident and the state government hurriedly deployed its officials to calm frayed nerves.

Report has it that the state governor’s Adviser on Security Matters, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo, and the SSA on Hausa/Fulani Affairs, have visited both the community and family of the deceased boy to appeal for calm.

Also, the Commandant Army Artillery Akure, Lt. Col Ejiga, said there was no intention of killing anybody in the area.

Ejiga called for the understanding of the people on the roles being played by the military in maintaining law and order in the troubled communities. He, however, apologised on behalf of Nigerian Army.

‘It was in self-defence’

Contacted, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Major Ojo Adelegan, who confirmed the incident, explained that the soldier shot the deceased in self-defence when members of the Fulani community attacked the team of soldiers that were in the community to maintain peace.

Adelegan said, “our men got information that some strange Fulani men entered into the town and we moved in to know what was happening. On getting there, our men saw those strange men and the next thing they did was to attack our men.

“They even used dangerous weapons to attack our men. So in self-defence, our men acted, though we are still investigating the matter.”

Also, the state Police Command said it has arrested one Adamu Kai in connection with the incident.

The command’s image-maker, Femi Joseph, alleged that Kai was the one that invited one of the soldiers to the scene to settle a fight that ensued among members of the Fulani community in the town.

He said: “We are yet to ascertain whether it was a soldier that killed the boy. But there was a fight between two Fulani men. So, one Abdullahi Kai invited the soldiers.

“It was in the course of settling the matter that an argument ensued between them and the soldiers, which led to the gunshot. Kai is with us now and investigation has commenced.”

It was gathered that the state Police Command said the school boy’s corpse had been released to his parents for burial. LR News

Major-General Rogers Nicholas

The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Rogers Nicholas, has pledged a N5m reward for anyone with information about bomb factories in or around Maiduguri.

The Theatre Commander told journalists shortly before a security meeting with sister agencies and the civilian JTF in Maiduguri on Thursday that the army is convinced that there is a bomb-making factory within Maiduguri from where suicide bombers have been operating.

General Nicholas tasked the Civilian Joint Task Force and the recently inaugurated Neighbourhood Watch with intelligence gathering.

He also urged internally displaced persons who are returning to their communities to be vigilant and support the army as the task of providing security is a joint responsibility.

The move by the Theatre Commander follows recent bomb attacks in Borno State.

According to him, 35 suicide bombers have so far been taken out by security operatives in the theatre of operations while at least 25 have been arrested in recent months.

The theatre commander gave the assurance that the army would assist farmers in ploughing and demining farmlands.

He, however, warned that the use of fertilisers would be controlled to avoid making raw materials for producing IEDs readily available for criminals.

Major General Nicholas said over one million people held captive have been rescued between December 2017 to date.
