South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa has signed into law the national minimum wage bill.

The development came at a time Nigerian workers are yet to get total commitment to N30,000 from federal and state governments.

Reuters reports that Ramaphosa’s office said on Monday that the signing was part of efforts by the government to tackle wage inequality in Africa’s most industrialized economy.

The National Minimum Wage Act sets South Africa’s minimum wage at 20 rands ($1.45) per hour, equal to 3,500 rands per month (N126,000).

The law will come into force on a date to be determined by Ramaphosa, the presidency said.

Supporters of the minimum wage say it will reduce inequality and stimulate economic growth as workers spend more.

Thousands of union members protested against the proposed minimum wage in April.

A retired Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police, Mr Waheed Kazeem, has expressed optimism that enhanced pay package for police personnel will spur their performances.
Kazeem told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday that welfare was germane to improved performance.
He said that training and re-training of police officers and men was equally important.
“They are the first contact of the state with the ordinary man.
“At this period of our nationhood, the state requires an unwavering support of the police to maintain its sovereignty.
“Therefore, their welfare should be a priority to deter them from unethical conducts,” the DIG said.
Kazeem, who expressed dismay at the poor state of police barracks across the country, advised police authorities to provide decent accommodations for the personnel.
According to the former DIG, improved living condition will go a long way to boost police performance.
He added that re-positioning of the police in line with global trends was long overdue.

Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola will be sworn in today as the new governor of Osun state, succeeding Rauf Aregbesola, who has completed an eighth-year tenure.
Oyetola is the fifth civilian governor of the state, created in August 1991. Others before him were Isiaka Adeleke, who ruled between 1992 and 1993, Chief Bisi Akande,(1999-2003), Olagunsoye Oyinlola(2003-2010) and Rauf Aregbesola(2010-2018).
The swearing in ceremony will take place at the Osogbo Township Stadium today, with the former governor retiring to Ilesa, his hometown.
Oyetola, the 64 year-old new governor won the post with the smallest margin ever in Nigeria’s governorship elections, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, after a rerun with 482 votes.
Adeleke is disputing the verdict at the election tribunal.
The election held on 22 September went into a rerun in some seven polling units. The PDP candidate had led the APC candidate with 353 votes before the rerun.
The difference was wiped out in the rerun, with the Social Democratic Party candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who was the second runner up in the first election, going into alliance with the APC.
The alliance was the game changer as Omisore gave the APC candidate, the votes needed in Ile-Ife to wipe out the PDP candidate’s lead.
Oyetola was born in Iragbiji in Boripe LGA of Osun State on 29 September 1954.
He went to Ifeoluwa Grammar School in Osogbo for his secondary education which he completed in 1972
He was a graduate of University of Lagos and had a B.Sc (Hons) Insurance in 1978 and MBA in Finance in 1990.
He is also an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London and Nigeria and a Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management.
He started his Insurance Career with Leadway Assurance Company after his NYSC in Maiduguri in 1980 as an Assistant Manager and rose to the position of Area Manager, Control Office, Lagos.
He worked at Crusader Insurance as Underwriting Manager, Corporate Alliance Insurance as Controller Technical before he left to set up Silvertrust Insurance Brokers in 1990. He was on the Board of many companies.
He was the Executive Vice Chairman of Paragon Group of Companies with interest in Oil and Gas, Real Estate, Stock Broking etc. until his appointment as the Chief of Staff to the Governor of the State of Osun.
He is happily married and has children.
Oyetola will be inheriting a load of economic and financial problems in the state, with the state owing workers salaries and pensions to retirees. However, junior workers were consistently paid.
The new governor is expected to deploy his financial skills to overcome the problems.

Former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Nasir Isa; President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi and the Vice President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, at a news conference

The meeting between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday in Abuja has ended without any agreement.
Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU President, while speaking to newsmen after the closed door meeting, said negotiation was ongoing and the meeting continued.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting, which started at 5 p.m. at the Federal Ministry of Education, was to find a lasting solution to the ongoing strike.
The union embarked on the strike three weeks ago over the funding of Nigerian universities and an alleged plan by the Federal Government to increase students’ fees and introduce an education bank.
The union is also demanding the implementation of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) agreement by both parties in 2017.
