The police have condemned the alleged release of list of killings by the Senate, saying it could worsen the security situation in the country.

The force said that the killings in parts of the country were being addressed, adding that suspects arrested in connection with the crime were being prosecuted.

“The release of the purported list of killings in Nigeria in 2018 by the Office of the Senate President is shocking, unfortunate and capable of worsening the security situation in the country.

“It is mischievous and heinous to play politics with people’s lives; even if it is a soul. The release is speculative and not supported by any fact. Office of the Senate President does not receive or process security report from state commands,” the force said in a statement in Abuja on Saturday by its spokesman, Jimoh Moshood.

The police claimed that they have recovered over 5000 prohibited arms from wrong hands across the nation, adding that the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of operation was delegated to brief the upper chamber on what was being done to address the security situation in the country, but was not allowed to make his presentation by senators.

The force faulted claims by the Senate Spokesman, Senator Sani Abdullahi, that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, was not summoned over Senator Dino Melaye’s arrest for alleged arms running, noting that that was the reason for the summonses.

The police expressed shock over the senators’ plan to grill the IG on television, stressing that security strategies cannot be discussed at such an open forum.

“The Senate’s action to cover the appearance of the IGP on national television is against national security, unconventional and it negates global security practice. There is nowhere in the world where security matters are discussed on national television, even the Senate deliberation and decision on the appearance of the IGP were done in a close session,” the statement said.

The police explained that the IG had since assumption of duty in June 2016, appeared 10 times before the Senate on different issues of national importance, noting that Idris held the lawmakers in high esteem.

No fewer than four persons were feared dead, while six others sustained gunshot wounds on Saturday in Ogun State as operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service and smugglers engaged in a shootout at Ilara, in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened at the border town with the Republic of Benin at about 8.30am.

Sources said trouble began when suspected smugglers while moving bags of rice in a convoy to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, were accosted by a joint anti-smuggling patrol team made up of the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service and soldiers.

It was said that as the soldiers and the Customs officers attempted to impound the contraband goods, the smugglers put up a stiff resistance, which resulted in an exchange of fire, leaving about four people dead and six others with gunshot wounds.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service,  Abdullahi Maiwada, confirmed the incident, but, he could not give the exact number of casualties.

Maiwada, admitted there was an interdiction between the Customs and smugglers at the Ilara border town on Saturday.

He said, “I learnt there was an interdiction between our men (Customs) and smugglers in Ilara border town when the smugglers wanted to move bags of rice in their vehicles out of the town to their receivers.

“But I don’t have details of the incident but I will get back to you as soon as I am fully briefed.”

But he has yet to get back to our correspondent as of the time of filing this report. LR News

The unopposed candidate (single candidate for a position) was returned through mass voice vote.

Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, Iran’s army chief

No fewer than 11 Iranians were among those killed in unprecedented Israeli strikes on Syria this week, a monitor said Saturday.
“At least 27 pro-regime fighters were killed” in Thursday’s strikes, said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
He said “six Syrian soldiers and 21 foreign fighters, including 11 Iranians” were among the dead.
That updates the monitor’s initial toll of 23, which did not specify the number of Iranians.
“The new report is due to the death of wounded or missing persons whose deaths have been confirmed,” Abdel Rahman said.
Israel said  it struck dozens of Iranian targets inside Syria early on Thursday in response to a salvo of rockets allegedly fired by Iranian forces into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran had “crossed a red line” and that Israel’s bombardment against targets in Syria was “a consequence”.
The Jewish state has long warned it will not accept Iran entrenching itself militarily in neighbouring Syria, where the Islamic Republic backs Assad’s regime in the country’s seven-year civil war.
Israeli forces have been blamed for a series of recent strikes inside Syria that have killed Iranians, though it has not acknowledged those raids.
Israel says it has conducted dozens of operations in Syria to stop what it says are advanced arms deliveries to one of its main foes, Iran-backed Hezbollah. LR News

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un: country invites journalists witness nuclear test site closure

North Korea will make a public show of its promise to close its nuclear testing site, north of the country.
According to South Korean news agency, Yonhap, North Korea  said it is taking “technical measures” to dismantle its nuclear test site, moving closer to honouring an offer made by its leader Kim Jong-un during the inter-Korean summit last month.
The North’s foreign ministry issued a press release, carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), detailing the country’s plans to shut down its Pyunggye-ri nuclear test ground.
The English-language statement said the ruling Workers’ Party and other relevant institutions are “taking technical measures for dismantling the northern nuclear test ground” in order to “ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test.”
During the third inter-Korean summit on April 27, Kim told South Korean President Moon Jae-in that he would “carry out the closure of the northern nuclear test site in May,” according to Seoul’s presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae.
Kim also offered to make the dismantling public. And the North’s foreign ministry said the ceremony for the occasion has been scheduled for between May 23 and 25, depending on weather conditions.
Given the limited space, only journalists from South Korea, China, Russia, the United States and Britain will be invited to cover the dismantling on-site, the ministry added. LR News

No fewer than one hundred youths on the platform of Anambra State Youth Organisation on Friday stage a solidarity march in support of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the youths carrying placards with various inscriptions marched through Amawbia by-pass and adjourning streets before ending at Anambra Police Headquarters, Amawbia.
Some of the placards which the demonstrators carried read; “Senate public is watching’’, “ Senate should leave the working IGP alone’’, “ IGP not enemy of democracy and IGP Ibrahim Idris is competent.’’
Spokesman of the organisation, Mr. Anthony Ogbugu, said the decision to hold the demonstration was to correct the wrong impression Nigeria Senate was creating of the IGP.
“It is wrong for the senate to declare that IGP is unfit to hold public office when Mr Idris is doing a lot to salvage the problem of insecurity in the country.
“Since the appointment of Mr Idris as the IGP, it is on record that he has led the police to arrest more than 500 members of Boko Haram and have stabilized security situation in many parts of the country including Anambra’’, he said.
Ogbugo who added that youth’s decision to condemn the call by the senator appealed to the senators to first look into the jumbo salary which they collect monthly if they really meant well for the nation.
He noted that the power to hire and fire lies with the boss and in the case of the IGP Mr President, saying the senate should follow due process in handling matters.
“If the IGP acts wrongly, let his boss punish him, let the members of national assembly focus on enactment of good laws that would help to address the mirage of challenges facing the Nigeria people’’, Ogbugu said.
Mr Chris Owolabi, Assistant Commissioner of Police, who responded on behalf of Mr Umar Garba, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, thanked the demonstrators for their peaceful conduct.
Owolabi assured the youths that their message would be communicated to the appropriate authorities. LR News
