Senator Bukola Saraki

Senate President, Bukola Saraki says to reduce the growing unemployment rate in Nigeria, the marginalisation of young Nigerians must be stopped by including their interest in national planning.

Speaking on Monday during a gathering on youth unemployment and development organised by the Senate, Saraki said it is necessary to consider the issue of marginalisation of Nigerian youths as the issue of unemployment persists despite several laws by the National Assembly on the issue.

“There are still things that we need to do. Those of you who are here are those who deal with this daily. We do hope as we continue to diversify the economy and move from economic recovery to expansion.

“We must end the marginalisation of young people by including their interest in national planning,” he said.

While welcoming participants to the event, he encouraged them to shed light on how the country can begin an inclusive development process that will end the marginalization of young people in the country.

Present at the meeting include the Director, African Youth Growth Foundation, Arome Salifu, Director, Centre For Leadership Strategy and Development, Dr Otive Igbuzor, Program Manager, Youth Initiative For Advocacy, Growth And Advancement Cynthia Mbamalu and the General Manager, Bank Of Industry, Abdul-Ganiyu Mohammed.

The Senate president says this consultative process is to help open up the decision-making process and aid the Senate to begin inclusive development programmes that will embrace a large portion of young people in Nigeria.

Jemele Hill

ESPN has suspended anchor-person Jemele Hill for 14 days for making political statements against U.S. President Donald Trump, on social media.
Hill, an African-American co-host of the 6 p.m. broadcast of “SportsCenter,” received backlash last month after referring to Trump as a “white supremacist” in a series of tweets that referenced the president’s comments about a deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Trump later suggested that NFL players be fired for not standing during the national anthem. In tweets on Sunday, Hill targeted Jerry Jones after the Dallas Cowboys owner stated that players who disrespect the flag would not play for his team.
Hill suggested on Twitter that fans who disagree with Jones should boycott the team’s advertisers and not buy the team’s merchandise.
“Cowboys have a huge national following,” she wrote in one of a series of tweets. “Lot of black & brown folks are Cowboys fans. What if they turned their backs on them?”
She clarified Monday she was not calling for an NFL boycott.
ESPN said in a statement Monday that Hill had acknowledged “letting her colleagues and company down” with the Trump tweet.
“In the aftermath, all employees were reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such actions would have consequences. Hence this decision,” the statement said.
Hill had called the president “a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.”
She wrote that he was “the most ignorant, offensive president of my lifetime.” She called him a bigot and said it was the height of white privilege to ignore his white supremacy because it wasn’t a threat.
“Well, it’s a threat to me,” she typed.
Hill did not immediately reply to a request for comment on her suspension.
Before she was suspended, Hill responded Sunday to a Twitter follower who suggested that NFL players would learn a lesson about “getting fired for not doing what your boss requires you to do.”
“Because if we did everything the boss said, Americans would still be dying of tuberculosis in factories,” she replied.

VP. Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday declared that  Nigeria is an investors’ delight as the Buhari Presidency is making specific efforts to enable the private sector to thrive.
Prof Osinbajo stated this at the Financial Times Africa Summit  in London noting that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, in the past months, had been working assiduously to improve macroeconomic conditions.
A copy of the speech was released to newsmen in Abuja.
According to him the administration specifically carried out extensive ‘ease of doing business’ reforms, in addition to on-going investment in infrastructure.
“After a continuous slide in growth since 2014, the trend of growth in GDP has turned around with a modest growth of 0.55 per cent in the second quarter of this year.
“Inflation, though still somewhat high, has declined from its peak of 18.7 per cent in January 2017 to about 16 per cent today,” he stated.
The Vice President noted that ‘’the outlook going forward is quite positive based on improvements in oil prices and production and the trend of leading indicators such as positive purchasing managers indices, a revived stock exchange and increasing foreign exchange reserves’’.
Highlighting some of the efforts of the administration in agriculture and power, the Vice President drew attention to the significant progress achieved in the ease of doing business initiative.
“In the first stage, reforms were introduced under a 60-day national action plan focused on eight areas that make it easier to register businesses, obtain construction permits, get credit, pay taxes, get electricity, trade across borders, facilitate entry and exit of people and register property.
“Practical examples of success include leveraging the use of technology to fast track business registration and payment of taxes, a functioning, tried and tested 48-hour electronic visa procedure, and an Executive Order mandating greater transparency and efficiency across all government agencies.
“The reforms have led to reduction in cost and time, as well as greater transparency for small and medium sized enterprises in particular.
“Following the 70 per cent success rate achieved in the first phase of the ease of doing business reforms, we recently embarked on a second national action plan which will have 11 areas of focus and will run for 60 days from October 2017,” he added.
According to Osinbajo, Nigeria is an investor’s delight because of the opportunities which the Nigerian economy offers, specifically emphasizing that “the opportunities are enormous indeed.”
He added that the Buhari administration was “nevertheless determined and optimistic that Nigeria will along with the rest of the continent bring about an Africa that works for all its people and contributes to global growth and prosperity.”
The Vice President observed that the theme ‘What Africa Works’, was appropriate and remarked that with Africa’s experience in the past few years,  was clear that “what makes Africa work, is what makes economies work anywhere.’’
He named the indices as “honest visionary leadership and good governance, letting the private sector and markets lead,  diversification from resource based revenues, developing the potential of the human resources available.”
The Vice President noted that Africa “can demonstrate with clear examples that what makes Africa work are the ingenuity and resilience of the people, especially its 70 per cent youth population,  leadership and good governance.’’
He said there was also the initiatives of allowing the private sector and markets to function, focusing on infrastructural development, and the incredible opportunities that abound.”
The summit was also attended by a number of Nigerian dignitaries including Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and Alhaji Aliko Dangote,  among others.

SAN Dr. Olisa Agbakoba

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr Olisa Agbakoba, has sued the Federal Government over what he described as “lopsided appointments” at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

According to a statement signed on Monday by his media assistant, Niyi Odunmorayo, Dr Agbakoba made the allegation in a suit filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

In the suit, he challenged the non-inclusion of the South East of the country in appointments to the NNPC Board.

The legal practitioner alleged that the appointment made by the Federal Government contravened the provisions of Section 14 of the Constitution, as well as the Federal Character Commission Act.

He stated that it was also in contravention of the “provisions of Sections 42 of the Constitution of Nigeria that prohibits discrimination of any of Nigeria’s ethnic groups such as, in this case, the South East.”

Agbakoba requested the court to declare the “lopsided appointments” of board members of the South East region unconstitutional, null and void.

No date has been fixed to hear the suit.
