Four people were killed on Tuesday when a small plane and a helicopter collided in southwestern Germany, police said.

The two aircraft crashed in the skies above the town of Philippsburg, close to the French border, a German police spokesman said, adding that he was unable to say if there may be other victims.

The cause of the collision also remains unclear, and the area where the planes came down has been cordoned off.

Collisions between aircraft in the sky are rare. In a case in 2002 in Germany, a freight plane struck a passenger flight, killing dozens of people.

Ex President Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday, in a 13-page statement, blasted President Muhammadu Buhari and advised him not to seek re-election in 2019.

In the special press statement titled, “The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement” Obasanjo said Buhari has performed far below expectation and should honourably join the league of the country’s former leaders.

He said Buhari should not toy with the patience of Nigerians but should in a dignified way dismount from the horse (seat of power).

“We all thanked God for President Buhari for coming back reasonably hale and hearty and progressing well in his recovery.  But whatever may be the state of President Buhari’s health today, he should neither over-push his luck nor over-tax the patience and tolerance of Nigerians for him, no matter what his self-serving, so-called advisers, who would claim that they love him more than God loves him and that without him, there would be no Nigeria say.

“President Buhari needs a dignified and honourable dismount from the horse. He needs to have time to reflect, refurbish physically and recoup and after appropriate rest, once again, join the stock of Nigerian leaders whose experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the sideline for the good of the country.  His place in history is already assured.  Without impaired health and strain of age, running the affairs of Nigeria is a 25/7 affair, not 24/7.

Explaining why he thinks President Buhari needs time to reflect and refurbish physically, the former President said the Buhari he knew is weak in the knowledge and understanding of the economy and it is evident in his administration as the economy does not obey a military order.

“I knew President Buhari before he became President and said that he is weak in the knowledge and understanding of the economy but I thought that he could make use of good Nigerians in that area that could help.  Although, I know that you cannot give what you don’t have and that economy does not obey the military order.  You have to give it what it takes in the short-, medium- and long-term.

“Then, it would move. I know his weakness in understanding and playing in the foreign affairs sector and again, there are many Nigerians that could be used in that area as well. They have knowledge and experience that could be deployed for the good of Nigeria.

“There were serious allegations of round-tripping against some inner caucus of the Presidency which would seem to have been condoned.  I wonder if such actions do not amount to corruption and financial crime, then what is it?  The culture of condonation and turning the blind eye will cover up rather than clean up.  And going to justice must be with clean hands.”

Police Officers on Monday accosted and arrested some members of the BringBackOurGirls campaign group during a protest at the presidential villa in Abuja on Monday.

Members of the group were protesting against what they call high-level of insecurity in the country and they insisted that they have the right to stage a peaceful protest without hindrance.

While the protesters were barricaded by policemen, the Convener of the group, Oby Ezekwesili granted an interview with Latest Reality Metro, where she said the Nigerian Police by accosting the protesters infringed on their fundamental rights to free movement.

She said the police officers obstructed them from proceeding to the Unity Fountain and formed a barricade around the protesters.

The Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) is a pressure group that championed the campaign on the return of the more than 270 Chibok Schoolgirls abducted from their hostel in 2014 in Borno state.

An early morning multiple car accidents involving seven vehicles has left four dead, six injured at the Ibadan / Oyo expressway, Ibadan.

The accident was said to have been caused by poor visibility as a result of heavy fog on the highway in the early hours of Monday just a few minutes before 7:00 am.

The accident which occurred at the junction of Aba-Odo on Oyo-Ibadan Expressway involved seven vehicles, comprising four trucks, one bus, one micro commercial cab and a private car.

At the scene, a combined team of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) led by the Sector Commander for Oyo State, Mrs Cecilia Alao, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and men of Nigeria Police Force, were met at the scene, carrying out a rescue operation.

An eyewitness and resident of Aba-Odo community, Mr Seye Ayoade said the accident was due to over speeding coupled with the foggy weather.

“One Hyundai was coming from Oyo going to Ibadan. The car was speeding but when it got to Aba-Odo junction, it slowed down probably because of the heavy fog. A Micra cab, which was behind the car brushed the car that suddenly slowed down. But a truck, which was also on top speed, I think, could not see the front very well rammed into the cars and in the process, the Micra cab was also affected.

“In fact, the truck dragged the cab for about 200 metres before it fell down. Only the driver of the Micra survived, all the other passengers, including an official of NSCDC, were crushed, other trailers also rammed into the scene,” he said.

However, the driver of a truck with Registration Number JIGAWA GML 85XX, died along with his passenger. The truck had its head severed from its body and mangled beyond repairs, and so was the Micro cab.

Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mrs Alao, also attributed the accident to heavy fog and over speeding.

“From what we heard, it was due to the fog in the morning. There was heavy fog in the morning and one of the vehicles in front had an issue.

“The ones coming from behind did not know. They didn’t see the front and we can’t separate it from the fact that some of them were on top speed. They were speeding, so they couldn’t apply their brakes on time.

“Seven vehicles were involved, comprising four trailers, one bus and two small cars. Six people were injured and they were taken to the hospital while four people died, three male and one female.”

Victims of the accident were taken to the morgue of the State Hospital at Adeoyo, Ibadan, while the injured persons were taken to St. Patrick Hospital, Ibadan.

The FRSC boss said the accident could have been avoided and advised motorists to be careful while driving.

She added that “We always emphasised caution when driving. When you cannot see your front clearly, you should not speed such that if anything happens, you’ll be able to manoeuvre or apply your brake and stop before you hit what is in front of you.

“People should obey all rules and regulations and when the weather is not friendly.”

The police have said that it is too early to conclude that members of the terrorist network, Islamic State in West Africa, were responsible for the violent attacks and bloodshed in Benue and other North-Central states.

The force, however, explained that it had arrested many suspects, adding that a good number of them had been arraigned in court.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Joshak Habila, explained on Monday that the police would not attribute the killings to anyone or group, but would instead go after the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

He said, “Investigation would show (ISWA involvement in the killings), it is too early to draw a conclusion, but whatever it is, the truth is everybody who is committing crime would be arrested and so, we don’t want to harp on anybody, group or organisation to make it difficult to process, but a criminal is a criminal.”

Habila, who spoke with our correspondent on the phone, said this while responding to questions on claims by the Department of State Services that the ISWA terrorists were responsible for the carnage in Benue, Taraba, Adamawa and other states in the country.

The information was said to be contained in an intelligence report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari by security agencies, including the DSS.

But the DIG, who is leading the operation in Benue against herdsmen suspected of masterminding the killings, explained that the police were collaborating with the DSS and other security services to end the carnage in North-Central states.

When asked if the DSS shared its intelligence report on ISWA with the police, Habila said he was not sure, but hinted that the secret service might have shared it with his boss, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

“They (DSS) normally share, it’s a deep collaboration, they may have done so, but not at my level, I’m on the ground (in Benue). The report would be properly analysed  and sent to me,” he said.

The DIG said that the police were engaging in confidence-building in Benue State, adding that the force was getting the necessary cooperation from the communities and the state government.

“Many people have been arrested, a very impressive number have been caught in the act, for disturbance of public peace and also destroying people’s properties and they are being prosecuted in court,” he disclosed.

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) on Monday urged the Federal Government to urgently find lasting solution to the alleged attacks and wanton killings by herdsmen in the country.
A statement by Mr Yinka Oguntimehin, the Publicity Secretary of the socio-cultural group, described last Sunday’s attack on the farm of Chief Olu False in Ondo State as wicked, rude and shocking.
Oguntimehin, a legal practitioner, said that such acts were inimical to the unity, love, peace and progress of the country.
“The attacks were deliberate attempts by the suspected herdsmen to
undermine the security of the country.
“With the recent attacks, it is a strong signal that Nigerians, particularly, farmers are not safe in their farms.
“And this is not too good for the federal government’s drive and policy on diversification and promotion of agriculture as a major alternative for oil.
“The attack also came at a time when Nigerians are still mourning the gruesome murder of 73 people in Benue and several others in other states.
“The Federal government must find lasting solution to the continuous attacks and wanton killings in the country,’’ Oguntimehin said.
The scribe of the Pan Yoruba group urged the federal government to curtail the herdsmen’s activities and address the present security challenges in the country.
“As a group that is poised to protect the interest of the Yorubas wherever they live in the country, we believe strongly that it is the
duty of security agents to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.
“We urge the federal government to nip the unwholesome activities of these herdsmen in the bud.
“The herdsmen are not ghosts. They are Nigerians like us and they must be stopped now before it degenerates into further attack and counter attacks.
“It is sending the wrong signals that our security apparatus may have failed in the discharge of their responsibilities,’’ the OPC spokesman added. LR News

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has injected 210 million dollars to  boost the inter-bank foreign exchange market and to meet customers’ requests in various segments of the market.

The Bank’s acting Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Isaac Okorafor, in a statement on Monday in Abuja said the fund would ensure that legitimate demands for foreign exchange were met.

He said that the CBN offered 100 million dollars  to authorised dealers in the wholesale segment of the market, while the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) segment got 55 million dollars.

He added that customers  in need of  foreign exchange for tuition fees, medical payments and Basic Travel Allowance (BTA), among others, were also allocated the sum of 55 million dollars.

Okorafor reiterated the Bank’s determination to continue to intervene in the interbank foreign exchange market, in line with its pledge to sustain liquidity in the market and maintain stability.

He said the CBN would continue to manage the forex market with a view to reducing the country’s import bills and minimise depletion of foreign reserves.

In the past week, the CBN intervened in the market to the tune of 210 million dollars, to cater for requests in the airlines, agricultural, petroleum products, raw materials and machinery sectors.

Meanwhile, the Naira  exchange at an average of N361 to a dollar at the Bureau de Change segment of the market. LR News
