The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday foiled an armed robbery attack at Sauka Federal Housing Estate, Lugbe Extension of the territory and killed two suspects.
The command’s Spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, in a statement, said that the operation followed a distress call on March 10 that some armed robbers were robbing the residents of the estate.
Manzah said that on sighting operatives from the Lugbe Division, the suspects opened fire on them.
He said that the exchange of gunfire resulted in the killing of two suspects by the gallant policemen, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
The spokesman said that the operatives while searching the scene and nearby bush, recovered two locally made pistols, nine flat screen television sets and two laptop computers.
Other items recovered are: two cutlasses; one knife; one touch light; one cell phone; wrist watches; jewellery; and shoes, among others.
He said that some victims had shown up at the Lugbe Police Division to identify their property from the recovered items.
Manzah said the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr Sadiq Bello, had assured residents of the territory of the command’s readiness to fight crime.
“He also enjoined hospital workers and members of the public to alert the nearest police station once anybody is sighted with gunshot wounds,” he said.
The police spokesman also said that the command had arrested six armed robbery suspects along Bannex junction in Abuja on March 10.
He said the suspects were arrested during a stop-and-search operation by personnel of the command.
Manzah said that during search, Emeka Nwafor and Onwunali Thankgod were arrested with one locally made pistol and two live cartridges.
He said the raid that was extended to their hideout in Mabushi led to the arrest of four additional suspects, Oke David, Jim Williams, Emmanuel Okoro and Uchenna Chukwuma.
He said that the search further led to the recovery of two live cartridges, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, eleven mobile phones, wallets and some charms.
“The suspects will be transferred to the Command Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation,” the spokesman said. LR News

President Buhari and Governor Samuel Ortom in Makurdi

President Muhammadu Buhari was told in Makurdi today that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, violated his order that he should shift base to Benue State, at the height of the bloody clashes between herdsmen and farmers.
At the town hall meeting held in Makurdi today, Buhari was told that Idris did not even spend 24 hours in the state.
An apparently surprised Nigerian leader remarked:
“I am not aware that the I-G did not spend 24 hours in the state as directed by me, I am getting to know this in this meeting.”
He also said the meeting was not the best place to expose the inefficiency of his appointees and appealed to the Benue people to exercise restraint and live in peace with their neighbours.
President Buhari told the meeting attended by farmers, herdsmen and government officials including Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, that he was doing his best to tackle insecurity in the land.
He denied insinuations that he overlooked the killings that happened in Benue, saying he is genuinely worried over them.
He said rice imports had dropped by 90 per cent and said states were massively involved in rice cultivation.
On his part, Gov Ortom appealed to the president to upgrade the ongoing military exercise in the state tagged ” Ayem A kpatema” to an operation to effectively curb herdsmen attacks.
”If the exercise is upgraded to an operation, it will assist greatly in ending the incessant attacks and senseless killings by herdsmen,” he said
He urged Benue people to exercise restraints and learn to live in peace with other people.
He said that many states in the federation were now involved in massive cultivation of rice.
He reiterated his call for the arrest of the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore for being responsible for the killings.
Ortom still maintained that ranching was the best option for cattle breeding in the country.
He also called on the federal government to take over the management of the Benue University Teaching Hospital, College of Education Katsina-Ala and Benue Polytechnic Ugbokolo.
Representative of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Benue Chapter, Shettima Mohammed, denied responsibility for the Benue attacks.
He said the association was peace loving and the exact opposite of its public presentation by government officials.

U. S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson

U. S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has changed his schedule so that he will spend only a few hours in Nigeria before leaving late Monday evening to Washington DC.
A spokesman for the top U.S. diplomat  said  Tillerson had cut short his first trip to Africa to return to Washington about one day ahead of schedule to deal with urgent work there.
“Tillerson’s travel plans have changed so that he can return to Washington early on Tuesday morning instead of late that night,” the spokesman told reporters traveling with him.
The secretary departed the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Monday morning.
He will visit Chad and Nigeria, both oil-producers struggling to contain the Islamist Boko Haram insurgency, on Monday afternoon and evening.
He was billed to spend  Monday night in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, before flying back to Washington.
On Saturday while visiting Nairobi, Tillerson, 65, canceled his scheduled events because he had been feeling unwell.
Tillerson’s week-long, five-country visit to Africa  came amid other urgent foreign policy developments, including Thursday’s announcement that U.S. President Donald Trump will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Latest Reality metro reports that Tillerson’s visit to the Horn of Africa just days after he announced a new $533m aid package for Africa out of which 128 million dollars was earmarked for Nigeria and countries of the Lake Chad region.
When Tillerson meets Buhari, both men are expected to discuss counter-terrorism efforts and humanitarian issues in Nigeria’s North-East and the Lake Chad basin.
He is also expected to discuss how to advance peace and security, promote good governance, and spur mutually beneficial trade and investment with the President
During his trip, he is expected also to meet with the U.S. Embassy personnel and participate in events related to U.S. government-supported activities. (Reuters/LR News)

US President Donald Trump has backtracked on raising the minimum age requirement from 18 to 21 for some gun purchases, local media reported on Monday.
Trump indicated support for the measure in the wake of February’s massacre at a Florida high school.
The latest proposals put forward by the White House instead suggested the establishment of a commission to examine whether the measure would make sense.
There was, however, no proposed timeline for the commission.
The proposals are much more modest than those Trump suggested he would support in February.

Controversially, they do include a plan to help individual states arm teachers on a voluntary basis.
The plan is backed by the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA) and opposed by the country’s biggest teacher’s group, the National Education Association.
Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer said in response to the new proposals that the White House has taken tiny baby steps designed not to upset the NRA, when the gun violence epidemic in the country demands that giant steps be taken.
“The White House is also supporting improved background checks.
“It is also calling on states to introduce measures which would allow law enforcement to confiscate weapons from people deemed to be a danger to themselves or others,’’ Schumer added.
A 19-year-old has been charged over the killing of 17 people at a school in Parkland, Florida, in February.
The former pupil had legally purchased the weapon used in the attack in spite of having a record of mental health problems and making threats. (dpa/LR News)

Zambia is waging a fierce campaign against sex dolls, threatening offenders with heavy jail terms over the dolls which, it says, are “very unnatural”.
“No one sells them openly, no one admits to owning one, and no one has been arrested,’’ report said.
The government launched the crackdown on the sex toys last month.
The action has propelled the issue of sex dolls to the top of the news agenda and made them a hot topic of conversation and debate on social media, dividing opinion in the largely conservative southern African country.
“Being a Christian nation, obviously we are anchored in Christian principles and one of the values is morality and ethics,” Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili , said.
Selling or using a sex doll is against Zambian law, she said, vowing to ensure they are not bought on the internet and imported.
“The use of sex dolls is definitely in contradiction to our natural heritage and our principles,” Sumaili added.
“The law actually forbids anybody to trade (in) and to use such objects — and so this is why we are saying for Zambians that this is a very unnatural thing.”
The minister said the ban was necessary after media reports emerged of sex dolls being imported into Zambia, apparently from Asia. Police are investigating, she added.
In recent months, Zambia’s independent and semi-official press have devoted many column inches to reports of sex shops popping up around the capital Lusaka selling sex dolls, as well as chronicling the backlash.
“God created man and woman for sexual satisfaction — but for a man or woman to use a lifeless object is immoral,” Sumaili said.
“Let’s not import foreign beliefs and experiences. Let us just believe in what we are.”
The manufacture of sex dolls has become increasingly sophisticated, with China developing custom-made “smart” dolls that can talk, play music and turn on dishwashers.
Sex dolls’ inventors say they can cure loneliness and help elderly men who lack female companionship.
In Zambia, the dolls made of silicone were reportedly in a variety of shapes and shades, but could not be found in any shops.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has denied calling for military intervention in the affairs of Nigeria.

Ekweremadu said this in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, when Governor Seriake Dickson hosted him and other African lawmakers attending the 74th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Africa Region) Executive Committee to a dinner, according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu.

He maintained that his comments on the floor of the Senate, though “unambiguously in defence of democracy,” were either being twisted or misconstrued by some persons.

While reinstating his respect for the Nigerian Armed Forces, Ekweremadu stated that comments made by lawmakers in the course of their duty should be situated within the proper context before any form of reaction.

He added that parliamentarians had a duty to continue to defend democracy in the country, making him to clearly caution fellow politicians against the mistakes of the past, which inevitably led to the abrupt end of the previous republics.

Ekweremadu said, “Of course, some people took it out of context and said I was calling for a military coup. I never called for a military coup. I never said the military was planning any coup. Even the military’s statement admitted that my statement was only cautionary and that we were sincere. But they went as far as saying that the international community should ignore my words of caution.”

The Deputy Senate President added, “I hold the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces in high regard. They have defended our democracy, our people and have acquitted themselves creditably. If they need anything now, it is encouragement because this is not the best of times for them. But we do hope that when parliamentarians make statements, they (the military) should be able to know exactly what they said before reacting so that we don’t overheat the system.”

As peace gradually returns to Daffo communities in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau, the state police command has confirmed the arrest of a herdsman with an AK-47 rifle.

The command’s spokesman, Mr. Terna Tyopev, who confirmed the arrest on Sunday, gave the rifle’s serial number as HC2614.

He said the herdsman, Muhammadu Bimini, was arrested by riot policemen on March 8, at Daffo.

Tyopev said, “The suspect has been transferred from Bokkos to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Jos and is being interrogated.”

The police spokesman also told the Latest Reality metro that 16 people had been confirmed killed in the multiple attacks on several villages that took place between Wednesday, March 7, and Friday, March 9.

He stated that the command had deployed more personnel in the troubled areas to restore peace.

The PUNCH had reported that the attacks took place at a time President Muhammad Buhari was on a one-day working visit to the state.

One of our correspondents had reported that apart from the killings, over 50 houses were destroyed.

However, leaders of the affected communities said 25 people were killed in the attacks.

The community leaders, who spoke to journalists on Sunday in Jos, said many persons were still missing.

Spokespersons for the communities, Rev. Mamot Adams and Mr. Macham Makut, said the remains of some of those killed were recovered and given two mass burials – one on Friday and another on Saturday.

The community leaders blamed the attacks on “our Fulani neighbours,” and listed villages attacked to include Nghakudung, Shilim, Morok, Mandung, Faram, Filla and Hotom.

According to them, also attacked were Dai, Kungul, Hurum, Dahua, Malul, Warrem, Josho and Ganda villages.

They said more than 5,000 people had been displaced, adding that some of them were in camps run by churches.

They called on security agencies to halt the attacks and restore permanent peace to the communities.

“We want the government to take urgent steps to end the attacks because our youths are agitated,” Adams said.

It was also gathered on Sunday that some other victims in the attacks on Miango village would be given mass burial on Tuesday.

The spokesperson for the Miango Youth Development Association, Lawrence Zongo, gave the name of the victims as Emmanuel Joseph and Christopher Joseph (twins, 16 years); their brother, Peace Joseph (6), Henry Audu (25), and Illa Peter (52).

Zongo said, “We just concluded a meeting with zonal executives of the MYDA to plan for the mass burial of our beloved ones killed by Fulani herdsmen. The burial has been fixed for Tuesday, March 13, 2018.”

Zongo faulted alleged plan by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to disarm vigilance groups and hunters.

“It surprised me that the IG wants to disarm vigilance groups and hunters. Let him start with Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen who are killing people in the country. Our people don’t have arms; if we have, we would have protected ourselves,” he said.

I won’t rest until every life is secured –Lalong

The Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, has directed security agents to arrest and prosecute “the criminals that perpetrated the killing of persons’’ in the Bassa and Bokkos local government areas of the state.

A statement on Sunday by the Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Yakubu Dati, quoted Lalong as saying that he would not rest until every life was secured.

“Plateau State will not condone the activities of hoodlums, who take advantage of conflicts among citizens to perpetrate killings and destruction of property.

“Governor Lalong believes that our differences are better resolved by sitting together rather than taking arms against one another,” the statement read in part.

But the Peoples Democratic Party berated Lalong and Plateau elders for not using the opportunity of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to make “valid demands.”

The PDP said instead of using the opportunity of the visit to tell the President the truth about the killings by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Plateau elders praised Buhari for selfish reasons.

The PDP, in a statement issued on Sunday by the state Publicity Secretary, John Akans, also faulted the naming of the Plateau gateway, Mararaba Jama’an Road, after Buhari.

It said, “The negative atmosphere was not helped by elders and statesmen who floundered at a crucial time to speak truthfully about the state. These elders were more concerned about a future of relevance for themselves rather than the security of their people.

“On the whole, Mr President missed the opportunity to worm his way into the hearts of the people of Plateau as a caring and decisive leader. And Governor Lalong also missed a glorious opportunity to project himself as a leader with a heart for his people and not merely as a stand-alone leader whose only major concern is looking good away from home.

“Nigeria’s President came to Plateau, saw and left the state in trauma. He got the hospitality of the people, but he did not acknowledge their bloody encounters with determined and unstoppable killers.

“The President and Commander-In-Chief even got a road named after him; but in an unbelievable fashion, he gave not a single word of sympathy to a grieving state.’’

“We are disappointed at this nonchalance by both Mr. President and Governor Lalong. Out of the depths of pain and sorrow, our hearts cry out for peace and justice on the Plateau. This is also one visit that will be remembered by Plateau people because their governor chose to elevate lies and half-truths to statecraft.

“Another of Governor Lalong’s missteps was the naming of the Plateau gateway after Mr. President. To what benefit?”

CAN summons emergency meeting

The Plateau Christian Association of Nigeria (Youth Wing) has summoned an emergency meeting over the killings in Plateau State by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Although the venue of the meeting has been kept secret, The PUNCH gathered that it had been scheduled for Monday (today) in one of the communities attacked by suspected herdsmen.

A text message convening the meeting was seen by The PUNCH in Jos on Sunday.

The SMS reads, “Dearly beloved, in view of some pockets of attacks in the Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos and Bassa local government areas of Plateau State, you are hereby invited to a crucial meeting to appraise the situations with the state YOWICAN Exco this Monday.”

Benue, Taraba killings: Army to arrest culpable govt officials

The Nigerian Army said on Sunday that it would identify and arrest everyone, including government officials, involved in the fresh killings and destruction of property in Benue, Taraba and Adamawa states.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Texas Chukwu, who said this in a statement, added that the commanders of troops in the affected states had been warned to take decisive actions or face court martial.

No fewer than 24 persons, mostly women and children, were killed last Monday in a fresh crisis at Omusu Edimoga, in the Ojpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.

Suspected herdsmen were reported to have invaded the community between 2pm and 3pm, killing the children who were said to be returning from schools.

Also in Taraba State, the police confirmed the killing of five persons in a fresh crisis on the Mambilla Plateau in the Sardauna Local Government Area about a week ago. The crisis was said to be between the Fulani and Mambilla ethnic groups.

But the Nigerian Army said on Sunday that the troops would work with other security agencies “to identify and arrest all those involved regardless of their positions in the society.” LR News
