Super Eagles now have a mountain to climb after losing to Croatia

Nigeria’s Super Eagles had an unimpressive start to their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign on Saturday in Kaliningrad with a 0-2 loss to Croatia.
They now have the Kilmanjaro to climb to qualify for the knockout stage, having dropped to the bottom of Group D and facing next hard-fighting Iceland and later wounded Argentina.
Coach Gernot Rohr lamented at the end of the game: “We’re really disappointed we lost this game. Croatia were the better team. We could have come back into it in the second half after we started very well before the penalty against us. We’re a young team, we’re learning and I hope in the next game against Iceland we will do much better.”
The Super Eagles made a slow start into the game, holding off the charging Croatians and making flank runs which yielded no clear-cut advance at goal.
The Croatians were tenacious, with Ivan Perisic’s shot flying over the bar in the 14th minute and Andrej Kramaric’s shot inches wide of the far side upright two minutes later.

Croatia captain Luka Modric: scores penalty to add to Eagles woes
The game went a gear up, with the Eagles now pushing them back through flank runs by Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses, which came off good midfield build-ups.
Croatia took the game in hand in the 32nd minute when Kramaric at the far side dived to head down a right flank corner kick.
The ball hit part of Oghenekaro Etebo’s body to roll past goalkeeper Francis Uzoho’s hands into the net for the opening goal.
Nigeria’s fightback was immediate but feeble, as Odion Ighalo failed to get the needed service from the flanks and middle, with Croatia just easily stifling their offensive moves.
Happy Croatians

A Croatian consoles a Super Eagle

The Eagles continued with their languid and cautious display, and were not able to threaten the Croatians who were by now more confident and sitting on their lead.
They forced Croatia into giving away a number of free kicks and corner kicks, but the Europeans were the more threatening offensively.
The entry of Ahmed Musa, a 62nd minute substitute for Alex Iwobi brought hopes of something better, but the Croatians had a better luck as a penalty kick advantage widened their lead.
William Ekong’s 70th minute infringement on Mario Mandzukic earned Croatia the penalty which Luka Modric scored by sending Uzoho the other way.
It looked all over by then, with the Eagles now disjointed in their moves and the 71st minute entry of Kelechi Iheanacho for Ighalo not making any impact.
Musa and Iheanacho did liven the Eagles’ attacking efforts thereafter, but with team captain Mikel Obi off for Simeon Nwankwo in the 87th minute, the game seemed ended as a contest.
The handful of Nigerian supporters in the stadium’s 31,136 crowd only waited for the four minutes added to wear out as Croatia only threatened thereafter to add to the scoreline.
Latest Reality Metro reports that the result meant Nigeria are at the bottom of their group after Argentina and Iceland had earlier drawn 1-1.
Nigeria will now face Iceland in Volgograd on June 22 in their second match, while Croatia take on Argentina in the group’s other game.

Sudan’s Central Bank building in Khartoum

The Central Bank Governor of Sudan, Hazem Abdelqader, has died of heart attack while on a visit to Turkey, his family and the Sudanese presidential palace said on Saturday.

Born in 1960, Abdelqader served in various departments at the central bank from 1985 before he was appointed governor in December 2016.

Family members said the father of six was not known to be suffering from any illnesses.

Sudan’s economy had been grappling with crippling hard currency shortage and “black market” for dollars that pushed the central bank to devalue currency to around 30 pounds to the dollar earlier this year from 6.7 pounds in late December. Reuters/LR News

Angry villagers have cut open a python’s belly after it swallowed a 54-year-old woman Wa Tiba, in her farm in Indonesia.
Tiba went missing while tending to her vegetable garden near her village on Muna Island in Southeast Sulawesi province on Thursday, according to the village chief, Faris.
When her family went to look for her, they found only her belongings in the garden, including her sandals, a machete and a flashlight.
The villagers subsequently launched a search for her but were horrified to find  a 23-foot-long python with a severely bloated belly just 50 yards from the garden.

Faris said the villagers killed the snake and when they cut open its belly, they found the woman’s body still intact wearing all her clothes.
Local police chief Hamka, who only has one name like many Indonesians, said: “Residents were suspicious the snake swallowed the victim, so they killed it, then carried it out of the garden.
“The snake’s belly was cut open and the body of the victim was found inside.”
Local villager Ayu Kartika said: “Everyone cried and was in shock. It looked like a horror movie. The people are terrified, afraid to go outside.”

The Pakistani terrorist leader who ordered the assassination of Malala Yousafzai has been killed in a drone strike, Afghan officials say.
Mullah Fazlullah was allegedly killed in a strike on June 13 in the Dangam district of Kunar province in Afghanistan.

Fazlullah had been the leader of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, designated by the U.S. as a foreign terrorist group in 2010, since taking over in 2013.

Initial reports in the area suggest that Fazalullah, along with four accomplices were killed in the strike just after fast breaking time.
Taliban sources have not yet confirmed the killing, but local sources confirm that Fazalullah and his followers were based in this area.
While U.S. and Pakistani officials have been quiet on whether Fazlullah was killed, two Afghan officials confirmed the terrorist’s death.
Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanish told ABC News the drone attack targeted Fazlullah in Kunar, close to Pakistan border.
“By eliminating Mullah Fazlullah, Afghanistan proved once again as it did with taking out many other TTP leaders in the past that it does not distinguish between terrorists that target Afghanistan or Pakistan.
“I hope we can now expect the same, not only in words but in proofs,” Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Omar Zakhilwal tweeted Friday.
Fazlullah has been reported dead multiple times in the past.
The U.S. confirmed the June 13 strike targeting Fazlullah, but not that he had been killed.

Some elders in Kwara have called on the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to allow the police do their investigations into the April 5, robbery in Offa in which 33 persons were killed.
The elders also want diligent prosecution of everyone mention in the case as “this is not the first time a top politician would be accused, investigated and found culpable of aiding and abetting crimes”.
They referred to the case of Bacita robbery of 1971 in which the suspects implicated S.T Oredehin. After police investigation, Oredehin was tried alongside the robbery suspects by a court of competent jurisdiction, found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.”
The Kwara elders, under the auspices of Kwara Elders’ Unity Forum, also called on the Inspector General of Police to carry out thorough investigation into case so that justice will be done on the matter.
Dr. Saliu Ajia, Chief Isiaka Jimoh and Mr. Adebayo Daramola, all representing Kwara Central, North and South Senatorial districts respectively, made the call in a statement on Friday.
The elders said that revelations and political colourations being given to the confessions of the arrested suspects showed that “the lives of Kwara people are in danger and must be protected”.
According to them, “the robbery in Offa would not have drawn the attention of the public but for the killing of 33 people including nine police officers, pregnant women and the mention of the Senate President Bukola Saraki”.

The Elders’ Forum recalled that “sporadic killings by cultists led by one Lanre Mohammed, the son of Magaji Nda of Ilorin which the IGP ordered to be transferred to Abuja Force Headquarters led to an initial outcry by Dr. Bukola Saraki”.
They argued that the transfer of the case to Abuja was a “normal police procedure” saying; “we hope that this Offa robbery will not overshadow that of the cultists because Kwara people are still waiting for the outcome of the investigations.
Other two of the Offa robbers outside a banking hall
“The revelation of Offa Bank robbery and the mention of the leader and government functionaries arming the suspects give room for more suspicions.
“As at the time of the case of the cultists killing, the bank robbery had taken place.
“The reaction of the Bukola Saraki may not help him and the people of Kwara State over whom he is the leader of his own camp.
“Some pertinent questions bordering the minds of the people of Kwara is that these boys have confessed to being political thugs of Bukola Saraki and must we institutionalize thuggery in Kwara politics.
The elders were of the view that the Senate President’s out-crying of a possible unjustified implication when the investigation of the cultist killers were transferred to Abuja was not necessary.
“Kwara people are too innocent to be under siege of these set of people and therefore we want to join forces with those pleading that the issue should not be politicized.
“IGP should be allowed to do a thorough investigation for the sake of the ordinary citizens of Kwara State and for the sake of poor common innocent Nigerians.
“The world is watching what happens as a very important personality is mentioned in a criminal case.
“Sweeping such a case under the carpet will do more harm to the IGP, our security institutions, and indeed the Federal Government,” the statement added. LR News
