The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Nigeria Police and other stakeholders on Monday set up a system to empower Nigerians to expose corrupt officials.
Mr Kolawole Banwo, Programme Manager, (CISLAC), said this at a one-day Stakeholders Consultation towards Establishment of Steering Committee for the Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC) in Abuja.
He said: “CISLAC  set up the Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre as a platform for citizens to report cases of corruption so that relevant institutions would address them.
“The role it will play is that it will empower citizens to speak up against corrupt practices, sometimes one of the ways to deter corruption is for the people to actually speak up against it.
“So ALAC educates people on their rights especially rights to social services and rights not to be exploited.
“This is because once they know those rights, they will be able to challenge it when somebody is doing it and then they will have a platform to report to.
“CISLAC will then escalate the cases by revealing them to the relevant institutions mandated to address such cases,” he said.
Banwo said that the stakeholders meeting was organised to discuss about the committee that would be set up for the effectiveness of the ALAC.
Also speaking, representative of the Nigeria Police, ACP Abayomi Shogunle, Head of Public Complaints Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU )said that the unit was established to effectively attend to Nigerians.
Shogunle said that the major aim was also to fight corruption in the Nigerian police force.
“When we say we are fighting corruption in the Nigeria police force, people doesn’t take us serious.
“The truth is we have the figures out there posted on the internet of cases of police officers that have been dismissed as a result of unacceptable corrupt practices.
“We have the data posted on our platform which shows that in the first two years we were able to recover N11.1 million bribe collected by police officers from members of the public,” he said.
Shogunle said that the money was returned to the rightful owners.
According to him, bail is free but due to ignorance on the part of the public and cases of some police officers abusing their office people pay.
He added that recently, the force had dismissed up to six police officers for collecting money for bail and urged Nigerians to report fraudulent officers.
He said the numbers are: 08057000001 08057000002, twitter handle is @PCRRU adding that “we need Nigerians to reach us so we can serve them better”.
Ms Bathsheba Tagwai, Legal Adviser, CISLAC, said that other stakeholders were “National Orientation Agency (NOA), National Human Rights Ommittion (NHRC) and Female lawyers.
Tagwai said others also include the EFCC ,the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, and legal aid council among others.
She said that a committee would be set up to help create synergy between ALAC and the relevant institutions to ease communication and make it more effective to help provide an improved feedback mechanism.
She said this would also help to improve resolutions of cases reported by using their good office to ensure that cases were effectively handled.
This, she said would give voice to the voiceless and also reduce corruption.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State says he has what it takes to contest against President Muhammadu Buhari for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next year’s presidential election.

The governor said this in a series of tweets on Monday, one day after the APC national leader, Bola Tinubu, accused him of defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because he wanted the Presidency.

He said, “If I wanted to and if the Presidency is what Ahmed Tinubu thinks I defected, I could contest with President Buhari under the APC. I have what it takes to have contested with Mr President.

“I adduced reasons of my defection to the PDP. The reasons are still on record. Automatic ticket by the APC is certainly not part of that.”

Governor Tambuwal also faulted the claim by the APC chieftain that he left the ruling party because it could not give him the automatic ticket he demanded.

On the contrary, he alleged that Tinubu has shown by making such accusations that the APC lacked a level-playing ground for its members.

Tambuwal said, “In any case, Tinubu is confessing that there is no level-playing ground for all members of the APC; that there is no internal democracy in it, and that some people were denied their right to internal democracy”.

“Tinubu tried to rock the boat when he was denied Buhari’s Vice Presidency. He thinks every other person could behave his way. If I wanted to contest under the APC as president, I could have done so and only the votes could have produced a winner,” he insisted.

In a statement on Sunday entitled “They Go Away Because We Go the Right Way”, Mr Tinubu alleged that Governor Tambuwal and Senate President Bukola Saraki left the ruling party because the APC refused to give them automatic tickets for the 2019 elections.

The governor defected from the APC on August 1, the following day the Senate President announced his defection from the ruling party. LR News

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State said the consistency with which the police interfered with the electoral process in the state was a declaration of war on the people.

This is just as a presidential hopeful of the People Democratic Party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, on Sunday,  asked the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government to stop the continuous harassment of Wike in the name of politicking.

Wike, who spoke during a state broadcast on Sunday, described Saturday’s House of Assembly bye-election for Port Harcourt State Constituency 3 as a failed exercise due to the disruption by the police and armed thugs.

The governor insisted that the armed thugs were working for the All Progressives Congress in the state, calling on Rivers people not to succumb to the antics of the police, lest they become slaves in their fatherland.

“The consistent sabotage of the electoral process by the police amounts to a declaration of war against the people of Rivers State and their solemn rights to freely and fairly choose their leaders and representatives,” he said.

Wike said despite assurances from the Rivers State Commissioner of Police during the last State Security Council meeting that the police would remain neutral and act professionally, the police on Saturday, August 18, 2018, joined forces with the APC thugs to disrupt the election.

He stated, “Instead of providing security for voters and INEC officials, the police brazenly colluded with political thugs of the APC to subvert the democratic process and denied the people of Port Harcourt Constituency 3 their rights to free, fair and credible elections.

“It is important to note that Ojukaye Amachree, who led the thugs, is the same person facing multiple murder trial and instead of arresting him as ordered by the trial court, the police have continued to aid and shield him from arrest and prosecution.”

Wike recalled that the June 16, 2018 local government election, which the APC failed to participate, was conducted peacefully without rancour and added that it was not the first time the police would be indicted during an election in the state.

He pointed out that following the widespread violence that erupted in the 2016 legislative re-run election in Rivers State, the INEC Panel Report (at page 66) indicted the security agencies as “brazen election riggers” and singled out the F-SARS Commander,  Mr Akin Fakorede, as the arrowhead of the violence and rigging that characterised those elections.

Meanwhile, Makarfi, a former governor of Kaduna State and presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP, claimed that Wike remained the most intimidated state governor in the country, noting that the deployment of federal might to harass him (Wike) must stop henceforth.

The former lawmaker was reacting to the suspended Rivers State bye-election for Port Harcourt Constituency 3 in the Rivers State House of Assembly, which was marred by violence on August 18, 2019, forcing the INEC to put a halt to the poll. LR News

As Catholic Church struggle to redeem its battered image necessitated by sex abuses of children by its Clergy, report has emerged that the church has spent more than $3 billion to settle cases.
According to National Public Radio (NPR), Clergy sex abuse of children has rocked the foundation of the Catholic Church in terms of trust and reputation.
The multibillion-dollar expense has gone to settlements in response to lawsuits filed by people abused by clergy, reports NPR.
Nearly 20 Catholic dioceses and religious orders have filed for bankruptcy because of the scandals.
An attorney whose firm represented abuse victims said that the money the church has paid because of the crisis is part of justice for those who suffered, though it hardly compensates for all the damage done.
“I don’t like the word healing,” said attorney James Stang to NPR, “because it’s too much of an individual process; but at the end of the day, that accountability is demonstrated by the payment of money.”
The lawsuits have been filed primarily against dioceses and religious orders, which have the kind of auspices over priests that a single parish does not.
The Catholic Church assets involved in settlements include cash, stocks, and land.
Johnny Vega, who was raped by a priest as well as a deacon of the New Jersey church where he was an altar boy, was one of more than two dozen victims who were part of a $5 million settlement in 2005 with the Paterson Diocese.
Vega and the other plaintiffs alleged in the lawsuit that the Diocese of Paterson and then-Bishop Frank J. Rodimer could have prevented the abuse.
“For the billions it has cost the Catholic Church, it does not compare to the cost of (traumatic) lives that many have suffered over the years,” Vega told Fox News.
For years, Vega struggled in silence through the abuse and the toll it took on him.
The priest and deacon were almost sacred figures to his parents, as well as others in the congregation, Vega said, and the thought of revealing the horrors they had inflicted on him was intimidating to a young boy.
He embarked on a chaotic path that included trying to end his life and hanging out with the wrong crowd before he began a journey toward healing that included starting a support group for other Latinos abused by priests.
“I was lucky enough to have had the support system needed to keep me strong and fight for changes.”
The Paterson Diocese also provided four years of psychological counseling, but did not publicly admit guilt or issue an apology.
On Tuesday, a grand jury in Pennsylvania released a report that said that hundreds of Catholic priests in Pennsylvania molested more than 1,000 children, and possibly many more, since the 1940s, and senior church officials, including a man who is now the archbishop of Washington, D.C., systematically covered up the abuse.
