Mr. Kayode Fayemi

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has denied reports that he stormed out of a meeting of the South-west leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The APC leaders had met with the governorship aspirants in Ekiti State on Tuesday in Abuja, days after the primary election conducted ended inconclusively.
Fayemi, who is also one of the candidates, faulted the claims that he walked out of the meeting in a statement on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Yinka Oyebode.

He said there was no basis for him to storm out of the meeting which was called by the leaders to proffer way forward for the party, in the face of the rescheduled Ekiti governorship primary.

The former governor maintained that he left the venue like other attendees at the end of the meeting.

He, however, said he could not make the second part of the meeting when it reconvened later in the evening, having earlier taken a permission from the leaders to attend another meeting.

“It is thus worrisome and highly embarrassing reading reports of purported ‘walk out’ on our leaders when nothing like that actually took place.

“We implore well-meaning members of the society and members of our great party to disregard the misleading reports.” the statement read.

IGP Ibrahim Idris

The Senate has declared the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, as an ‘enemy of democracy’ and that he is unfit to hold a public office.

Senate President Bukola Saraki announced this on Wednesday during plenary at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The announcement followed the refusal of the police boss to appear in person before the lawmakers after he was summoned earlier on two different occasions.

Earlier, the Senate entered a closed-door session which began at about 12:24 pm and lasted for about almost an hour.

Upon resumption of the plenary, Dr Saraki revealed that the lawmakers deliberated on the non-appearance of the IGP after a series of invitation.

According to him, Red Chamber noted that the development was disrespectful to the institution and constitutional authority.

“The Senate resolves to declare the IGP as an enemy of democracy and not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria and that the refusal of the IG to appear before an investigative committee, as also ruled by a court of competent jurisdiction, is a great danger to our democracy” the Senate President said.

Meanwhile, some senators have criticised the police boss over his non-appearance at the Red Chamber.

The Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, said “It is very unusual for a public servant to act like this; I have never seen this before anywhere in the world. We need to take a decision because this affects security in the entire country.”

For Senator Enyinaya Abaribe, the action of the IGP shows that there is “no respect for the law” in the country.

He decried that the nation’s democracy is dying bit by bit and accused Mr Idris of abuse of power and office.

On his part, Senator Isah Misau said although the action was not against the Senate but against the Presidency, he noted that the IGP is not competent to be in the office.

“This is unacceptable and disrespectful. It requires immediate action and I think this Senate needs to take serious action in looking for a way forward,” Senator Emmanuel Bwacha also told his colleagues.

Mr Garba Shehu

The Presidency has blamed the repeated killings in parts of the country as an attempt by some individuals to create a war in Nigeria.

Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja during his appearance on Channels Television’s breakfast programme.

He added that while the herdsmen might have a share in the killings, the nation is being attacked by some elements of the outlawed Islamic State who sneaked into the country.

“It is very clear that there is an attempt by some people, within and outside the country, to create a war,” Shehu said on Sunrise Daily.

“There is intelligence available that clearly indicates that, yes, there are Fulani herds people who kill but this country also suffers from attacks by ISIS which has come into the country and they found a place in the cleavages that divide the country,” he added.

Several people have lost their lives since the beginning of the year in Benue, Taraba, Zamfara, and some other states as a result of the series of attacks on their communities.

While many have accused herdsmen of attacking farmers in the affected states, President Muhammadu Buhari said the herders-farmers clash is an age-long crisis.

He had also noted that it would be wrong to make such allegations, blaming the killings on fleeing men recruited by the late Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

Speaking about the situation, Shehu noted that it is the north-central region of the country that is being affected most by the killings.

He stressed that members of the Islamic State were taking advantage of the fact that the region is the ‘dividing line’ between the Muslims and the Christians, as well as the northern and southern parts of the country.

The President’s spokesman further decried that the terrorists were carrying out massive attacks on innocent citizens, citing the arrest of a suspected member of the group who attempted to kill the Muslim deputy governor of Taraba State.

He also recalled the reported killings of several persons in Benue by wanted criminal suspect Gana, stating that the Federal Government has gotten to the root of the situation.

On the proactive measure taken by the government to stop the killings, Shehu said arrests are being made while people are being declared wanted.

He, however, maintained that there was a huge mix of criminality linked to the killings while a group of people was not helping the government in solving the crisis.

The presidential aide said. “Yes, the Fulani herdsmen who taken to this criminality; there is also the Islamic State in West Africa factor, and the fact that the opposition political party seems to be operating from a different country.

The scene of the attack in Maiduguri, Borno State

Two female suicide bombers were killed on Wednesday morning while attempting to attack a mosque in Borno State, North-east Nigeria.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Damian Chukwu, confirmed this in a statement personally signed by him.

He revealed the attackers tried to gain entry into the Alhaji Bunu Mosque during the morning prayers in Jiddari Polo general area on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the state capital.

Mr Chukwu added that the bombers who were between the ages of 13 and 16 years were, however, prevented by the policemen on patrol and unarmed vigilante men also praying in the same mosque.

“In the ensuing stampede, both bombers ran into an uncompleted building in the neighbourhoods, collided and simultaneously exploded, killing only themselves,” he said.

The police commissioner affirmed that no other casualty was recorded in the incident.
He noted that normalcy has been restored in the area and the remains of the girls have been evacuated.

Chukwu also said the police and the EOD team deployed have sanitised and rendered the area safe. LR News
