Former SGF, Babachir Lawal

Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal bail.
Lawal’s bail comes 24 hours after he was remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
EFCC on Tuesday arraigned Lawal before a Federal High court in Abuja over his use of a company said to be owned by him to remove what he had described as ‘invasive grass” at the cost of over N272 million.
Lawal had pleaded not guilty to the 10 count charges the EFCC pressed against him, bordering on alleged conspiracy and fraudulent acquisition of property.
But the court, on Wednesday, granted both Lawal and two other bails in the sums of N50m each with one surety each who must possess titles to lands within the jurisdiction of the court, show evidence of payment of tax for the past three years and must be residents within the jurisdiction of the court.
The court also held that the former SFG and the two others must deposit their international passport with the court pending the fulfillment of their bail conditions.
The court adjourned the case till March 18, 2019 after adding that Both Mr. Lawal and the two others must remain in EFCC’s custody until they fulfill their bail conditions.

CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen

The Code of Conduct Tribunal has ordered both the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of Police to arrest of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Delivering a ruling of the three-man tribunal, the Chairman of the CCT, Danladi Umar, ordered the security agencies to produce Onnoghen at the tribunal on Friday.

He dismissed the objection raised to the application for the issuance of the arrest warrant and ordered that “I want to see the defendant in the dock on Friday”.

‎The CCT had made the order following an application by the lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar (SAN), who said the consistent absence of the CJN from the CCT was a violation of provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

Umar, who anchored his application for Onnoghen’s arrest on section 6(1) of the Practice Direction of the CCT, also opposed the call on the three-man tribunal by the lead defence counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), to hear all pending applications.

Umar maintained that by virtue of section 396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 no objections could be raised by the defendant until he took his plea.

The prosecuting counsel said Onnoghen having not taken his plea, the objection by him could not be heard.

Five Army officers suspected to be fake soldiers Tuesday were paraded at the Imo state police command headquarters in Owerri.

 The Commander 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze Owerri, Brigade General H. I. Bature, stated this during the signing of the Peace Accord/Agreement by the Imo state governorship candidates ahead of the 2019 general elections.

 He also said that two out of the five suspects were caught escorting a politician, but the Army commander did not mention the name of the politician said to be enjoying the security of the fake Army officers.

 However, Vanguard captured that among the top governorship candidates who attended the peace accord/agreement ceremony, the All Progressives Congress, APC, Hope Uzodinma, Emeka Ihedioha, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Uche Nwosu, Action Alliance, AA.

 But Ikedi Ohakim of the Accord Party, AP, and Ifeanyi Araraume of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, sent their running mates, Mrs. Ann Dozie and Steve Nwoga respectively. 

On the arrest of the suspected fake Army officers whose names were not mentioned, at the parade ground, the Army Commander said: “You can see, they are wearing the same uniform. You will find it difficult to differentiate them from myself. They are not soldiers. Unfortunately, two of them were caught escorting a politician.

 “One of them, Kelvin, is not near anywhere close to military formation. We have a way of identifying fake soldiers. The exhibits recovered are unbelievable. I want to sensitize our people that if you are in the habit of recruiting fake Army we will arrest you.”
