The Presidency says it is aware of an audio recording in which Leah Sharibu, the remaining Dapchi schoolgirl held captive by a faction of the Boko Haram, appeals to President Muhammadu Buhari to help free her.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, revealed this via his Twitter handle on Monday after the recording was exclusively published by online media organisation, TheCable.

According to Shehu, the Department of State Services (DSS) is investigating the clip and the Federal Government will work on the outcome of the investigation.

In the audio clip, the 15-year-old said in Hausa, “I am Leah Sharibu, the girl that was abducted in GGSS Dapchi. I am calling on the government, particularly, the President to pity me and get me out of this serious situation.”

“I also plead to the members of the public to help my mother, my father, my younger brother and relatives. Kindly help me out of my predicament. I am calling on the government and people of goodwill to intervene to get me out of my current situation. I am begging you to treat me with compassion.”

Leah has been in captivity after the insurgents invaded and abducted over 100 students from the Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi in Yobe State in February.

The terrorists kept her in captivity allegedly for refusing to renounce Christianity.

A 40-year old house wife, Aisha Alhassan on Monday dragged her ex-husband Murtala Ishaq before Magajin Gari Sharia Court in Kaduna over alleged abandonment of his daughter for 20 years.
The complainant told the court that since the birth of the daughter 20 years ago, she had been shouldering the girl’s responsibilities.
“We divorced 20 years ago when Asiya was an infant, since then, he had never cared for her needs.
“I fed her, clothed her and even paid her school fees without any support from him”, she narrated before the court.
The woman said that her daughter had to forfeit a Polytechnic admission opportunity because she could not afford the initial registration fees of N65,000.
She prayed the court to compel Ishaq to henceforth take full responsibility of his daughter.
The defendant, however, denied the allegations, saying he had always performed his parental responsibilities.
According to him, a court had given him custody of the child 20 years ago but that the mother forcefully took her away, a situation which made him to reduce his support for the child’s upkeep.
“They told me that the girl had gotten suitors who are interested in marriage and I gave my consent, but the mother insists the girl must go to a higher institution.”
Ishaq told the court that he is a poor man and could not afford to finance the girl’s studies in a higher institution.
He however, told the court that he would have no objection to his daughter’s quest for further studies if the would-be husband could shoulder that responsibility.
The judge, Malam-Musa Sa’ad adjourned the case to Sept 4, to enable the complainant present her witnesses.

NBS Boss, Yemi Kale
Statistician General and Chief Executive Officer of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Dr. Yemi Kale, last week denied reports quoting that Nigerian economy had yet to recover from recession.
Kale categorically said that Nigeria was out of recession and that at no time did he suggest otherwise.
His denial was contained in a statement released on Monday by the Bureau’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. J. Ichedi.
NBS said that it reported in the second quarter of 2017 that the country was out of recession as the country recorded the first positive growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) following five quarters of contradiction.
He said that economic growth as measured by GDP has remained positive ever since with 0.72% in second quarter of 2017; 1.17% in third quarter of 2017; 2.11% in fourth quarter; and 1.95% in first quarter of 2018.
Ichedi said that NBS had continued to explain that there would be economic recovery after the recession.
The economic after recession moves gradually towards sustainable strong growth which “is the stage we are now’’.
This is the position which the CEO told Arise Television in an interview, he said.
The CEO, he said, told the television that the economy was in the second state of recovery and heading toward sustainable growth which is the last stage’’.
“This should not be wrongly interpreted as the economy is still in recession,’’ Ichedi said.
According to a report by a local newspaper on Monday, the Statistician-General was quoted to have lamented the performance of the nation’s economy in the second quarter of the year.

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has no power to probe the state government.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, the governor said that the EFCC should approach the Court of Appeal to set aside the 2007 judgment barring the commission from investigating the state.

“We are not afraid of their probe and they have no power to probe us.

“No government official will appear before the EFCC until they set aside the court judgment of Rivers State Government against them in 2007. We cannot be intimidated,” he said on Sunday.

Wike also alleged that the anti-graft agency was embarking on a political witch-hunt using the media.

“We are aware of their tricks. They should not bother engaging in media trial because it will not work. This is a mere political witch-hunt,” he said.

The governor explained that the state had obtained a court judgment in 2007 preventing the anti-graft agency from probing it.

He, however, wants the commission to vacate the order in a superior court before probing the activities of the state.

The governor also decried the freezing of accounts of the Benue and Akwa-Ibom state governments earlier by the EFCC.

On August 8, the anti-graft agency froze the accounts of the two states, a development that sparked criticisms especially by the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF).

Furthermore, he accused the Federal Government of using the agency for illegal actions in the state, despite the Attorney General writing to the EFCC and attaching the 2007 judgment against the federal agency.

He said, “An agency of federal government has frozen the accounts of Akwa Ibom and Benue State Governments. This is the worst coup against the constitution and the law-abiding people of those states.

“But the target is not Benue or the Akwa Ibom States. The real target is Rivers State. The EFCC as a federal agency has no business with State Funds. That is the responsibility of the State House of Assembly.”

The total number of electric cars in Europe has reached the million mark, after sales increased by more than 40 percent in the first half of the year, said a report published by EV-Volumes, a database of electric vehicle sales.
About 195,000 plug-in vehicles were sold in Europe during the first half of 2018, 42 percent higher than for the same period of 2017. These include all Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV), passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
With this trend, the total number of European plug-in vehicles is expected to reach 1.35 million by the end of this year, according to the report.
Norway still leads the European country ranking as 36,500 plug-ins were sold in the first half of 2018.
The report expects 84,000 plug-in sales in Norway by the end of the year, a share of 45 percent in the country’s market of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
However, Germany might overtake Norway by the end of 2018 for total sales.
Europe hit the landmark of a million plug-ins about a year after China, but ahead of the United States, which is expected to reach the target later this year.
“A stock of one million electric vehicles is an important milestone on the road to electrification and meeting emission targets but it is of course not enough,” said Viktor Irle, a market analyst of EV-Volumes.
According to  a study published in March  by the German branch of the strategy consultancy McKinsey,  the number of new electric car registrations across the world rose to 1.2 million in 2017.
More than 600,000 electric cars were newly-registered in China alone, marking a year-on-year increase of 72 percent from 2016.
Electric mobility also made inroads in the traditionally more diesel- and petroleum heavy German automotive market.
The number of electric registrations, including Plug-in-Hybrids, in Germany doubled to 58,000 in 2017. The new hybrid technology combines conventional petroleum-fuelled motors with a battery-powered electric motor which enables motorists to charge their vehicles with regular power outlets.
According to McKinsey, Asia still remains the dominant producer of electric vehicles with 41 percent of total cars manufactured in China and 19 percent manufactured in Japan. Germany only came third in the list with a global market share of 18 percent.
The study attributed China’s technological lead to the prior enactment of a legally-binding national quota for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), as well as more generous subsidies for consumers buying electric vehicles (40 percent of the sales price in China vs. 20 percent in Germany).
As a consequence, Chinese consumers could choose from a globally unparalleled array of almost 100 different types of NEVs.
