Don Waney's mansion demolished

The Federal Government on Tuesday demolished a multi-million naira mansion at Omoku, in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, belonging to the slain Niger Delta militant and notorious kidnapper, Don Waney.

Southern City News learnt that the house was bulldozed under the watch of heavily-armed security agents, who mounted guard at different angles of the militant’s palatial home.

Waney and two members of gang were shot dead on Saturday in Enugu State by a combined team of soldiers and operatives of the Department of State Services.

A resident of the area, who identified himself as Ukandu, told our correspondent that the bulldozers came in on Tuesday morning after over 15 Hilux vehicles had brought in security operatives, including soldiers and policemen.

Ukandu explained that the security agents took position in different parts of the mansion and outside, in the bush, ostensibly to stop any intruder from obstructing their operation.

He pointed out that the demolition, which began in the morning hours, ended in the afternoon, adding that the entire building was reduced to rubble.
Don Waney's mansion before demolition

“Nobody was allowed to enter the place, especially those who wanted to take photographs of what was going on. More than 15 Hilux vehicles brought in security agents and after that, six bulldozers came in and brought the building down,” Ukandu said.

When contacted, the spokesman for the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, told our correspondent that Waney forfeited the property and other things to the government after he became a fugitive and refused to come out and defend himself over allegations of killings in ONELGA.

However, several calls to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, for him to confirm the demolition of the late militant’s house, were not answered.

Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers has declared 32 cultists wanted in a state broadcast  and asked the security agencies to go after them, putting a bounty of N20m each for information that could lead to their  arrest.
The total reward is N640million, N440million more than what the governor offered for the arrest of Don Wani, the kidnap kingpin and cultist, linked with the killing of 23 people in Omoku on New Year’s Day.
The broadcast  was a celebration of the killing of the criminal, whose real name was Johnson Igwedibia. He was killed by the military on Saturday at a hideout in Enugu.
According to Wike,  32 cultists remain in 12 local government areas in the state and had reneged on the terms of amnesty offered them by his government.
He listed them and said he  wanted all of them arrested  and prosecuted by the security agencies, pledging all assistance necessary.
“Based on reliable information by the security agencies, I hereby direct them to immediately arrest and prosecute the under-mentioned persons who have either reneged on the terms of the amnesty and or refused to embrace same by continuing with cultism, kidnapping and armed robbery in the state,” the governor said.
“The Rivers State Government will pay N20 million to any person who volunteers useful information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of any of the afore-mentioned persons. Since 2015, we have been calling for tackling security issues devoid of political considerations in Rivers State in order to achieve maximum result,’’ he added
Governor Wike wanted to end the era of criminals running colonies in the state as he  warned them  to leave the state or risk facing the death sentence.
His government is proposing an amendment of the State Anti-kidnapping Law, which  prescribed death sentence for criminals involved in cultism, robbery and kidnapping.
Wike warned that the State Government has zero tolerance for crime and criminal activities, adding that his administration will continue to adopt measures to protect lives and property in the state.
“We reiterate our zero tolerance for all forms of criminality and reassure all residents of our determination to be tough on those who choose to violate our criminal laws and undermine peace and security in the state,’’ he added.
“To underscore the seriousness we attach to the fight against violent crime, we shall be amending the Anti-kidnapping law to prescribe the maximum sentence for engaging in cultism, robbery and kidnapping.”
He lamented that the amnesty programme of the state government which enthroned peace and was largely successful had been compromised.
“Our decision to offer amnesty to all repentant cultists, militants and criminals was done in good faith and in the best interest of the state,” he said.
“Regrettably, while the programme was on course, some opposition leaders in our state, unhappy with the successes recorded, dissuaded some armed militants and cultists from sincerely embracing the amnesty,’’ said the governor.
“This is the reason why we must thank the President for doing things differently and with the support of all, a different result has been achieved,’’ he stressed.
According to him, the security challenges in Omoku antedated his administration.
“For years the security situation in Omoku in particular, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area in general, has been most challenging because of the criminal activities of Don Wanny and his gang,’’ he said.
“We therefore wholeheartedly thank President Muhammadu Buhari for rising to the occasion and not politicking with the issue of security,’’ the governor said.
“We also commend the security agencies, particularly, the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Security, for swiftly rising to the challenge in the most professional manner,’’ Wike said.
“There is no doubt that this heroic success has proven what is possible when our security agencies are willing to discharge their constitutional duties with unadulterated commitment and professionalism,” he stressed.
He said that the decision of the state government on the amnesty offer was clear, adding that “those who genuinely embraced it were bound to fully, completely and perpetually renounce all forms of criminality to enjoy the terms of the amnesty or face the full weight of the law when they deviated  from the programme’’.

Bill Gates

Nigeria has authorised Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to start the repayment of $76 million  polio eradication loan to Japan.
The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, made this known in Abuja on Tuesday when she received a delegation of Japanese House of Councillors Parliamentarians.
She said that the delegates were in Nigeria to assess the level of usage of Overseas Development Assistance (ODAs) extended to Nigeria since 2014.
She added that the authority to trigger repayment was given to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation following the eradication of polio in the country.
She noted that the eradication of polio was made possible as a result of the ODA facility provided by the Japanese Government valued at $76 million in 2014.
She recalled that the ODA was structured for repayment after four years and that by this development, Bill and Mellinda Gates Foundation would start repaying the facility to Japan this year.
Adeosun while marketing Nigeria to the Japanese delegation noted that Nigeria was fast growing and evolving from negative areas to positive areas through its determined fight against corruption.
She added that “because Nigeria is a middle income country, we will require the expertise of Japanese companies for infrastructure development.
“Nigeria is a good place to invest because it is a rising investment destination.
“I promise that the government will make life easy for Japanese investors wishing to do business in Nigeria.”
In his address, the leader of the delegation, Mr Kiyoshi Ejima, described Nigeria as a power house with rich natural resources with which Japan tried to strengthen relationship with.
Nigeria, he said, had set the target of becoming one of the top 20 economies by the year 2020 and he assured that “Japan will support Nigeria toward realising its 2020 target.”

A Lagos factory worker, Victory Eno, who allegedly drugged and raped his female co-worker, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, a resident of No. 24, Afari-Ogun St., Ikeja, is standing trial on a charge of rape.

The accused, according to Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi, committed the offence on Dec. 24, 2017.

Emuerhi alleged that the accused raped the 22-year-old victim, who works in the same factory with him after drugging her.

“On the 24th of December 2017, Eno drugged his female co-worker after he offered her rice which he had earlier mixed with Indian hemp.

“The victim started feeling dizzy after eating the rice while the accused assaulted her by penetrating her (private parts),’’ he said.

The offence contravened Sections 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Rape carries life imprisonment in Lagos State.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Bolanle Osunsanmi granted the accused bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Osunsanmi said the sureties must be gainfully employed while one of them must be a blood relation and should also show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the government.

She adjourned the case until April 16 for mention.

The World Bank forecasts that economic growth in Nigeria would edge up to at least 2.5 per cent in 2018, as the country benefits from improved commodity prices, investments and trade.
The Bank on its January 2018 Global Economic Prospect report launched on Tuesday in Washington DC noted that  Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to grow by 2.8 per cent in 2019 and 2020.
The World Bank forecast that global economic growth will go up to 3.1 per cent in the year 2018.
According to the bank, growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to continue to rise to 3.2 per cent in 2018 and to 3.5 per cent in 2019, on the back of firming commodity prices and gradually strengthening domestic demand.
However, the report showed that growth would remain below pre-crisis averages, partly reflecting a struggle in larger economies to boost private investment.
“South Africa is forecast to tick up to 1.1 per cent growth in 2018 from 0.8 per cent in 2017. The recovery is expected to solidify, as improving business sentiment supports a modest rise in investment.
“However, policy uncertainty was likely to remain and could slow needed structural reforms.
“Nigeria is anticipated to accelerate to a 2.5 per cent rate this year from one per cent growth in the year just ended. An upward revision to Nigeria’s forecast is based on expectation that oil production will continue to recover and that reforms will lift non-oil sector growth.
“Growth in Angola is expected to increase to 1.6 per cent in 2018, as a successful political transition improves the possibility of reforms that ameliorate the business environment,” it stated.
According to the report, Côte d’Ivoire is forecast to expand by 7.2 per cent in 2018, Senegal by 6.9 per cent; Ethiopia by 8.2 per cent, Tanzania by 6.8 per cent, and Kenya by 5.5 per cent as inflation eases.
The World Bank said that the regional outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa was subject to external and domestic risks. It showed that any unexpected activity in the United States and Euro Zone could have a negative impact on the region.
Also, an abrupt slowdown in China could generate adverse spillovers to the region through lower-than-expected commodity prices.
“On the domestic front, excessive external borrowing without forward-looking budget management could worsen debt dynamics and hurt growth in many countries.
“A steeper-than-anticipated tightening of global financing conditions could also lead to a reversal in capital flows to the region. Protracted political and policy uncertainty could further hurt confidence and deter investment in some countries.
“Rising government debt levels highlight the importance of fiscal adjustment to contain fiscal deficits and maintain financial stability.
“Structural policies including education, health, labour market, governance, and business climate reforms could help bolster potential growth,’’ it stated.
The World Bank called on policy makers around the world to focus on human investments to increase their countries’ productivity, and move closer to the goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity. LR News

A housewife, Bayonle Bamidele, on Tuesday told an Idi-Ogungun Customary Court in Agodi, Ibadan, that she denied and beat up her husband, Adeyemi Bamidele, anytime he demanded sex for fear of contracting HIV.

Bayonle said this in court while defending herself in a divorce suit filed by her husband over her refusal to have sex with him.

She said her husband was a womaniser who always brought his female friends to their matrimonial home.

He said, “I have warned him to stop promiscuity to avoid contracting HIV, but he didn’t listen to me.

“So, I denied him sex for fear of contracting HIV due to his carefree sexual attitude,” she said.

Bayonle urged the court to grant the request of her husband, saying she was not ready to give her body to a flirt.

The husband, a retiree, had approached the court for dissolution of his eight-year marriage with Bayonle on the ground that she denied him sex.

He also alleged that the defendant always beat him and threaten to kill him whenever he demanded sex.

He said, “My lord, I marry her to give me kids and satisfy my sexual urge, but the reverse was the case.

“The union of eight years is yet to produce a child, worst still, she denies me sex and beat me whenever I make move to sleep with her.

“She is a wicked woman, am tired of living with a wife that refused to give me sex,” he said.

The President of the Court, Chief Mukaila Balogun, dissolved the marriage and directed the plaintiff to pay N5, 000 to the defendant to pack her belongings from the plaintiff’s house.

He also warned the parties to restrain from trouble, but to go their separate ways.
