President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Daura, Katsina State, assured Nigerians of his continuous commitment to serving the nation, attributing his recent convalescence to a divine act of the almighty God.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said Buhari stated this when he received associations of farmers, businessmen, youths, elders and politicians from Katsina state at his country home.

President Buhari said he returned to the country with renewed hope and strength to pursue policies that would improve the livelihood of the people and reposition Nigeria for good.

He said: “Considering the challenges we are facing as a nation, we have been doing our best to provide sustainable solutions, and we will keep doing our best.

“I am happy you came here today, and I am thankful for all the prayers.
“You are leaders of various groups at the grassroot, and you are closer to the people so you understand these problems as well. We need your support.’’

In his remarks, the leader of the group of associations, Alhaji Sani Ahmed Daura, said the President’s return signalled God’s interest in turning around the fortunes of the country.

Daura said: “On behalf of all the elders here, we are grateful to God you returned alive and in good health.’’

Daura, a former Assistant Inspector General of Police, said the President’s life of patience, endurance and contentment was exemplary, praying that God would give him more strength and wisdom to lead the country.

The presidential media aide revealed that President Buhari also received the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman.

Sports Minister, Barr. Solomon Dalung

The Sports Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung has commended the Super Eagles for their spirited display against Cameroon in Yaounde on Monday.

Dalung, who met the players just before they left their hotel for the stadium and gave them a message of encouragement from President Muhammadu Buhari, hailed the players for their spirit and sure –footed approach.

“The Super Eagles have done very well. They have made Nigeria proud and I commend them. We are close to getting the ticket to Russia 2018,” he opined.

In a similar vein, the NFF President Amaju Pinnick expressed confidence that the Eagles would wrap up the World Cup ticket when they host Zambia in Uyo next month.

“This was the toughest World Cup qualifying group in Africa and the Super Eagles have been excellent. I praise them for their efforts since the qualifying campaign started and I want them to go for the three points against Zambia so that we wrap up the ticket quickly without further delay.

“Everyone called it the Group of Death, but we are alive to tell the story, and a very good story at that. We await Zambia and I believe the sweet story will be completed in great style.”

Cameroon merely delayed Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup ticket celebration even as the African champions were themselves eliminated from the race in a crunchy game that ended 1-1.

In the event, the Super Eagles will qualify for their sixth FIFA World Cup finals with one point from their last two matches of the campaign.

Governor Godwin Obaseki

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has tasked charitable persons, governments, religious groups and other organisations to remember the people of Benue State and others in distress, as the world celebrates the International Day of Charity on September 5.

Obaseki said the scale of the crisis resulting from the flooding in parts of Benue State was beyond the power of the State Government alone and urged global leaders, captains of various industries as well as religious leaders to mobilise resources for victims of the flood.

“The International Day of Charity set aside by the United Nations reinforces our common humanity, shared values and love for one another especially in times of crises,” Obaseki said.

He decried the lack of accurate climatic data to guide builders and developers in flood prone areas at the local government level where much of uncontrolled development takes place.

The governor commended President Muhammadu Buhari for throwing the Federal Government’s weight behind efforts to assist victims of the floods in Benue State as he earlier did for Edo State and others that were affected by floods a couple of months ago.

He lauded similar support by individuals and groups, some of whom made donations without disclosing their identities as well as local groups that participated in rescue efforts during the crisis.

The United Nations Day of Charity is marked on September 5 every year.

The day is set aside to recognize the role of philanthropy in the eradication of all forms of poverty and attending to the needs of the most vulnerable people.
