Governor Samuel Ortom

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue, has denied any plan to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The denial is contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Terver Akase issued to newsmen in Makurdi.
It said that the media report on the governor’s purported plan to leave the APC was false, misleading and handiwork of detractors playing politics with the blood of the people.
”We read a report in a national daily of today which named Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom as one of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders planning to defect to another political party.
”The report which is obviously sponsored is not only false but also misleading. Governor Ortom has no intention to leave APC for another party and has not consulted anyone on the matter.”
The statement stressed that Ortom enjoys cordial working relationship with other leaders of the party both at the local, state and national levels.
It said that the main focus of the governor was to deliver greater benefits of democracy to his people including tackling the security challenges confronting them.
“There is no cause to warrant his defection to another party,” the statement stated.
It explained that Ortom’s stance of seeking justice over the invasion, killing and wanton destruction of property by suspected herdsmen was what any good leader ought to do.
The statement said the governor was appreciative of the efforts being made by President Muhammadu Buhari in ending the conflicts in the state.
According to the statement, the governor is fully aware that the killings in Benue began during the past PDP-led administrations in the state.
”It must be noted that the killings predate the APC as a party and the present administration. The governor’s focus is on solving the problem in collaboration with other stakeholders.”
It added: “Fortunately, President Buhari has responded positively by sending troops and other security operatives to chase away the armed militia from Benue communities.”
The statement further dismissed insinuations that Ortom had fallen out of favour with other leaders of APC in Benue, including Sen. George Akume.
“The report is aimed at creating acrimony between the Governor and the Senator.
”Governor Ortom was popularly elected to lead Benue State and he has demonstrated uncommon commitment and selflessness in justifying the confidence reposed in him.
“He, will therefore, not be distracted by baseless reports and rumour of defection.
”What is of greater concern to the governor now, is how to stop the killings in the state and also tackle the humanitarian crisis that displaced nearly 500,000 people.’’
It stated the government was collaborating with the Federal Government on the rehabilitation and resettlement of the displaced persons.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended the President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki for his commitment to the funding of healthcare in Nigeria.
The Director General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusw who gave the commendation, hailed Saraki for pledging that the Senate will include one per cent (1%) of the country’s Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) for primary healthcare in the 2018 Budget consideration.
According to a statement by Olu Onemola, the WHO boss took to his twitter handle @DrTedros to hail Dr Saraki, saying that political will is needed to provide universal healthcare coverage.
Ghebreyesusw wrote “Good news! The President of the Senate of #Nigeria @BukolaSaraki committed to ensure 1% of the Consolidated Revenue Fund is included in Nigeria’s budget to strengthen primary healthcare. Political will at all levels is needed for #HealthForAll,” the WHO Director General Tweeted to the Senate President’s official handle @SPNigeria.
Earlier this week, Saraki, in a keynote address delivered at the 58th Annual General & Scientific Conference of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), stated that Universal Healthcare is a promise that he and his colleagues in the National Assembly have made to Nigerians, and it was one that they were also determined to keep.
“As I intimated when the delegation led by the NMA President and the Executive called on me at my office, and as I reiterate now, Primary and Universal Health Care provision is a key legislative agenda for the 8th Senate under my leadership. It is a promise that we have made to Nigerians, and one that we are determined to keep.”
Recall that on June 24th 2017, the Senate President launched the Legislative Network for Universal Health Coverage and urged the Federal Government to honour the Abuja Declaration of 2001, while also calling for the full implementation of the National Health Act of 2014, which he helped to formulate in the 7th Senate (2011 to 2015).
At the launch, he said: “There is no better place than here today, to announce that the issue of funding will be attended to in our budgetary review of the 2018 Appropriations Bill.
“The Senate has, with the cooperation of the House of Representatives, resolved to mandate our Committees on Appropriations to ensure that the pledge to set aside 1 per cent of the Consolidated Revenue Fund for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) is met,” the President of the Senate said.
With this move by Saraki, Nigeria’s health expenditure as a proportion of government’s general expenditure – which currently stands at just 4% — is expected to increase significantly, while at the same time reducing the cost of out-of-pocket expenditure of Nigerians for healthcare, which is currently pegged at 73%.

Newspapers in the UAE are on death row as adverts dry out

Newspapers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been caught in financial crisis because advertisers have turned to new media such as Facebook and Google, UAE’s biggest newspaper Gulf News said Sunday.
In an analysis published on the Gulf News website, Abdul Hamid Ahmad, Editor-in-Chief of Gulf News, said that UAE’s local media had never been in a more “miserable situation” than today.
“Companies have virtually stopped advertising in print publications,” said the editor. In addition, the website of local media, as an extension of print media, failed to generate sufficient revenues, he said.
“Something has to be done to save and secure the future of these media,” said the Emirati media veteran.
Scores of local and foreign news outlets in the UAE have downsized their business or shut down in recent years.
In December 2016, Britain’s General Trust and the Daily Mail stopped the 14-year publication of the free tabloid daily “7 Days” in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
In April 2017, news channel City 7, owned by the UAE’s conglomerate Bin Hendi Enterprises, ceased operations.
Meanwhile, new media have emerged.
Earlier in May, a new radio channel “The Heart of Sharjah” was launched as the first English radio channel in the UAE’s sheikhdom of Sharjah.
In mid-April, global news network CNBC went live in the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi, after the channel had been in operation from the Dubai Media City for over a decade. LR News
