Chinese President Xi Jinping’s anti-graft drive, which has targeted officials at all levels, has punished more than 1.3 million people in five years, the anti-corruption watchdog said Sunday.
The anti-corruption campaign, which Jinping launched shortly after becoming the Communist Party’s leader in 2012, was meant to fell both high-level “tigers” within the party and “flies” in lower bureaucratic ranks.
More than 1.3 million officials at the township level or lower have been punished in the past five years, including 648,000 village officials, said the party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
The announcement comes just as the Communist Party is preparing to convene, starting Oct.18 in a congress that takes place once every five years to anoint the party’s top leadership.
Jinping is largely expected to remain president for another five years but some reshuffling might take place in the Politburo Standing Committee, the top decision-making body.
Critics say the president has used the anti-graft campaign as a way to purge political opponents and consolidate power, along with other strategies such as tightening the control over state media and restructuring the military.
Former high-flyers whose heads have rolled in the anti-corruption drive include; Zhou Yongkang, a former security chief and Standing Committee member.
Others were Bo Xilai, former Commerce Ministry and Governor of Liaoning Province; and Sun Zhengcai, a former party secretary of Chongqing who had been seen as a potential successor to Jinping.
The head of the anti-corruption agency, Wang Qishan, is Jinping’s close friend and might remain in the Standing Committee despite passing the informal retirement age of 68.

At least six persons were killed and 35 injured, mostly suffering burns, after an explosion at a natural gas depot in Accra,  Ghana’s capital, fire service spokesman Billy Anaglate said on Sunday.
The explosion on Saturday evening at the state-owned GOIL liquefied natural gas station sent a giant fireball into the sky above the eastern part of Accra, causing frightened residents to flee their homes in large numbers. Others were forcibly evacuated.
Ghana, a relatively new oil and gas producer, has suffered several recent accidents including an explosion in 2015 that killed around 100 people.
Several onlookers at the scene of the explosion expressed anger on Sunday that the government had not done more to prevent another fatal accident.

The Nigeria Police and Ondo State Government have expressed their readiness to nip in the bud any attempt by Boko Haram to launch terrorist attacks in the South-West region.

Ogun State Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, while reacting to the arrest of a Boko Haram suspect in Ondo, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the police would not allow Boko Haram members or other criminals to hold the state to ransom.

“The recent arrest of a suspected Boko Haram member in Ondo State is a clarion call for the commands in the South-West to wake up. For us in Ogun, we are always prepared. Our intelligence unit is working round the clock and other operatives are on guard too.

“There is no hiding place for criminals in Ogun State. We are daily combing every nook and cranny of the state to nip any manner of crime in the bud. We will get any criminal, no matter in what form he comes,” Oyeyemi said.

Similarly, the Ondo State Government said security had been beefed up in the state to prevent any terrorist attack.

Its Commissioner for Information, Yemi Olowolabi, said, “We have adequate security in place to curtail crime in the state and that is what has led to the arrest of the Boko Haram suspect. We are working with all the security agencies in the state. We won’t take anything for granted. We’ll always ensure the security of lives and property of our people; so no Boko Haram activity can succeed here.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party in the state has called on Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to take the security issue in the state more seriously.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the party, Ayo Fadaka, said, “The fact that we have elements of Boko Haram in our state is a reason for apprehension.

“It is time to ask the governor to put in place measures that will nip in the bud any attempt to breach the security of the state. It is better to prevent them from happening than to manage the after effect of those crises.”

While commending the security agents in the state for being proactive, Fadaka urged the Akeredolu administration not to betray the people’s trust.

“The fate of all of us is in the hands of the governor and we expect him to do all he can so that we will not experience any attack in our state,” he said.

The Police Command in Ebonyi had confirmed that Chinedu Linus, a student of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, was killed by robbers on Friday.
The Spokesperson of the command, ASP Loveth Odah, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the gunmen robbed Linus and subsequently killed him.
Odah said no arrest had been made, but that several operational units of the command were currently on manhunt of the hoodlums.
“I urge students not to confront robbers or any person bearing arms whenever they are attacked because such a person was no longer normal.
“It is only a living person that makes use of valuables as no amount of valuables in ones’ possession can equate to life,” she said.
The spokesperson also appealed to the relevant agencies to construct access roads to students’ hostels for easy rescue operation in case of attacks.
“Our officers responded swiftly to the distress call by the students, but there was no road leading to the hostel where the incident occurred.
“Our officers had to park their patrol vehicle on the main road and walk to the hostel where the corpse of the deceased was and took it to the mortuary of Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki,” she said.
A source, who spoke to NAN on the condition of anonymity, noted that the robbers, who numbered about four, shot the deceased as he confronted them.
“They invaded the deceased’s hostel, about 1:30 a.m. during a downpour after gaining entry with a ladder which they used to climb the building’s fence.
“We heard loud knocks on our gate and Chinedu who is the students’ leader at the hostel, brandished a rod to ascertain the person knocking at the gate.
“The robbers grabbed him and started asking where he kept the money as we suddenly heard gun shots.
“They entered my room, robbed me of N15,000 and two cell phones and robbed the entire occupants of the hostel; they took the money we contributed for electricity bills.
“We later learnt that they attacked our neigbouring building, but it seems Linus was the only occupant who unfortunately confronted them,” he said.
The Special Adviser to Gov. David Umahi on Student Affairs, Mr Gideon Onwe, expressed sadness on the incident and said that the state government had directed immediate arrest of the culprits.
“The government has urged security agents to include the Lucky City Hostel, the affected hotel as one of security flashpoints which they should patrol on a 24-hour basis,” he said.
