A senior journalist and his mother were found dead in their house in Mohali, India on Saturday in what police believe to be a case of murder.

KJ Singh was a former news editor of the Indian Express, The Tribune and The Times of India in Chandigarh.

Mohali senior superintendent of police,  Kuldeep Chahal, who confirmed the killings  in Phase 3B2 said the motive was being investigated.

Police sources said Singh was found with his throat slit, while his mother, Gurcharan Kaur, is believed to have been strangled.

According to Hindustantimes, Singh’s Ford Ikon car is also missing, the police said.

The murder came to light around 1pm when a visitor went inside the house after getting no response at the gate.

He is the third journalist to be killed in India within days of the murder of Gauri Lankesh, a Kannada journalist, and Shantanu Bhowmik, who was killed in Tripura earlier this week.

A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Jude Idimogu, on Saturday, said it was too late for the Igbo nation to pull out of Nigeria.

Idimogu, representing Oshodi/Isolo Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that secession would be injurious to the Igbo.

He said, “As a full blooded Igbo man and a Nigerian, I believe that staying in Nigeria as an entity will prosper the Igbo nation better than pulling out.

“After the 1967 Civil war, the Igbo man started all over again to build up; now Igbo nation has made progress in terms of economy and politics.

“Though the Igbo nation has not reached where it is expected to be politically, we should dialogue rather than be creating war scenarios.

“It is too late to pull out (of Nigeria), Igbo nation has united Nigeria because they have businesses everywhere in this country.”

The lawmaker urged the Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Mr Nnamdi Kanu, to rescind from any action that could create enmity against Igbo around the country.

He urged the Igbo nation to unite with other ethnic groups in the country to articulate their grievances and actualise their dreams.

“My children were born in Lagos and some of them don’t even know their state of origin, they speak Yoruba and so many Igbo children are like that across the North and West.

“We have our future in Nigeria. The only thing Igbo nation should fight for is political power not by creating war scenarios but by merging with other nations/tribes in Nigeria – the Northerners and Westerners.

“Most Igbo, over 50 per cent, don’t even believe in Biafra because they have counted the cost from 1970 after the war till 2017. No one wants to go back to square one; it is not possible.

“As a person, I am against it; what the Igbo man should struggle for in this entity are equality, fairness and justice, not pulling out.

“It is very late to pull out, it will be difficult because majority of us are not ready to fight any war; I don’t want to lose my life nor my sons and daughter in war; I believe we can make Nigeria our home.”

According to him, even if the Igbo nation wants to pull out of Nigeria, it is not going to be overnight or by aggression, rather it should be via a friendly and democratic process.

“Kanu should calm down, unite with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a tree cannot make a forest,” the lawmaker said.

Dr. Amina Bello, the wife of the Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, has called on parents and well-to-individuals in the society to support and encourage girl child education.

She made the called when she presented gifts to top-three winners of the Maiden Spelling Bee Competition on Saturday in Minna.

The competition was organised by Child Rights Advocacy Guild of Nigeria in collaboration with the Niger State Child Right Protection Agency.

The competition, which started in June and ended in July, had 230 pupils participants from 32 selected public schools in Chanchaga Local Government Area of the state.

The wife of the governor had during the grand finale of the spelling competition pledged to reward those who came first, second and third with a laptop and school kits.

Bello, while presenting the items to the winners, called on parents to avail their children, especially female ones, formal education.
She said both boys and girls have equal rights to education as one of the most significant stage of their lives.

She said: “Education is a right of every child and best reason a child can grow up to be fully independent and empowered.

“Parents should ensure their children who were not in school go to school especially the girl child who was at disadvantage.”

Bello commended the organisers of the competition for their initiative, adding that continuity of the competition would improve vocabulary among students.

The wife of the governor called on individuals, groups and organisations to support the initiative so as to improve academic performance of students across the state.

Mariam Kolo, the Director-General of the state Child Rights Protection Agency, assured that the agency would ensure that the spelling bee was conducted across the 25 Local government areas of the state.

Kolo said the agency would enforce the rights of children such as right to basic education and right to live without fear.

Earlier, Abubakar Alhaji, the Coordinator, Child Rights Advocacy Guild of Nigeria, explained that the essence of the competition was to give children their right as contained in the child right law.

Gifts were presented to Destiny Oere from Limawa Primary School and Salamatu Usman from Kwasu Primary School and Uchenna Odumegwu, from Waziri Nursery and Primary School in Minna.
