Seven Bridges, allegedly killed himself at his Kentucky home

It was a moment of sorrow and sadness after a 10-year-old boy Seven Bridges, allegedly committed suicide after he was criticised at school for wearing a colostomy bag.

Bridges, from Kentucky, hanged himself at his family’s home on Saturday while his mother was out on grocery shopping, WHAS-TV reported.

The child’s mother, Tami Charles, said she found him hanging inside a closet.

“I saw my son dead. That’s something in my head,” Tami Charles told the station.

Bridges was born with an unspecified bowel condition and endured 26 unsuccessful surgeries to fix the issue, WDRB-TV reported.

The ailment resulted in the need to wear a colostomy bag. A colostomy bag collects waste from a portion of the colon outside the body, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Bullies reportedly targeted the child over the smell from the bag. Bridges endured months of repeated bullying, his mom told the station.

“JCPS: You all failed my baby,” Charlies said of her son’s school district. Charles told the station that the family “absolutely” plans to take legal action against Jefferson County Public Schools. The district has opened an investigation, but couldn’t comment on pending litigation.

Former President  Olusegun Obasanjo has said those in the present administration will not only go to jail, they will go to hell if their corrupt acts are exposed.

He also explained why he forgave an ex-Vice-President and Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in an interview with the BBC Yoruba monitored by our correspondents.

Comparing Atiku with President Muhammadu Buhari, Obasanjo said his former deputy, though not a messiah, was far better than the incumbent President.

He said, “What I am saying is that where we are today; our present situation, if you look at those who are there today and our boss (Buhari), I insist that Atiku will do better than them.

“This is not a prophecy. Those in government today, if we expose them, all of them will enter hell; they will not only go to jail.  They will go to hell. Whoever that God does not expose his sins to the public is the person whose secret is kept.”

Obasanjo, however, said he was not privy to the plans of Atiku if he became Nigeria’s next President.

He said, “I did not say he (Atiku) will behave like Jesus.  I did not say he will behave like Prophet Muhammed, but he will do better, in fact twice better than  what we have at present.”

Obasanjo said the President’s performance in the area of the economy was worse than his assessment of his (Buhari) knowledge of the economy in 2015.

The ex-President said Atiku was not an angel but he had atoned for his sins when he came to him in Abeokuta and sought forgiveness.

He said, “Those who talked about what I said about Atiku, what about what I said about Buhari? His performance is even worse than what I thought.

“I said Buhari did not know anything about economy. Have you not seen it? I said he did not know about diplomatic relations, have you not seen it?

Ex-President accuses Buhari of nepotism

While accusing Buhari of nepotism, Obasanjo said the President gave priorities to his ethnic group when appointing people into sensitive positions.

Obasanjo added, “Look at what is happening, the person that is leading us says he cannot appoint any other tribes into the posts he considers sensitive because he does not trust them.  If he cannot trust my tribe and your tribe what is the benefit? And he still wants my tribe and your tribe to vote for him. So, he can ask us to vote for him but he cannot trust us to be appointed into sensitive positions. What is sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander.

“If you don’t trust us, how do you want me to trust you? If you trust me and I misbehave replace me with another person.  But if only your maternal and paternal relatives are the only people you can appoint because they are the only people you can trust…

“In Nigeria, where we have tribes numbering about 500,  you now said you could not trust some people. That is what we are saying.”

Obasanjo also berated Buhari’s economic policies, saying “Look at our economy, is it the way it should be? Our economy can never develop if foreign investors do not come to invest in the economy . But, as it is, they are not coming into the country and they will never come.”

On the activities of  Boko Haram, Obasanjo lamented that the insurgents were deadlier than they were before the present administration.

YPM knocks Obasanjo for attacking Buhari

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator, Yoruba Patriots’ Movement, Chief Oladosu Oladipo, said the anti-Buhari’s comment of Obasanjo was unbecoming of a statesman.

The group was of the view that the unsubstantiated allegations against the President had “reduced his (Obasanjo’s) value both politically and intellectually.”

Wondering about the inconsistency of the ex-President, Oladipo who spoke in Ibadan, said the aspersions being cast on Buhari had further impacted negatively on Obasanjo’s integrity.

Oladipo said, “Two things I see, making a U-turn or somersaulting in the broad daylight has reduced his value both politically and intellectually. It has reduced his integrity; reduced all his virtues and has put him as somebody whose words cannot be relied upon and who cannot mentor the up-and-coming generations. In fact, he is double-mouthed.”

In a statement issued by the group, the YPM said, “Those of us with genuine intentions, shall support these great leaders to take Nigeria to the next level. The national looters of yesterday should please go to sleep and give development a chance. We call on smaller parties to merge with the APC which is now a mega party. I want to advise Nigerians not to take Chief Obasanjo seriously.”

Oladipo described the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as a great man following the footsteps of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

There are very strong indications that the new salary increase approved by President Muhammadu Buhari in November last year for policemen would be paid next week.

This is to boost the morale of policemen for effective performance in the forthcoming elections.

Investigations reveal that the presidency released a special fund two weeks ago for the payment.

But the fund earlier released was believed to be inadequate to pay junior and senior personnel, prompting the police authorities to write to the presidency requesting for extra fund to pay personnel.

It was further learnt that the new salary increase announced by President Buhari was not supposed to be paid now until the 2019 budget is approved and money released to various ministries and departments.

This is because the salary increase was not included in the 2018 budget of the police.

However, investigations have revealed that the presidency reasoned that if the new salary increase was paid before the elections, especially in January, the morale of policemen would be high to perform creditably well.

Subsequently, the former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, was requested to work out the difference in the salary increase and forward this to the presidency for release of funds.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Force Accounting and Budget, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Finance and Administration, were said to have submitted the salary difference to Idris who in turn submitted it to the presidency.

However, the shortfall was said to have been released last week, just as the new IGP Adamu Mohammed took over from Idris.

Investigations also revealed that the arrears would not be paid with January salary, but would be spread over subsequent months.

Presidential Spokesman, Femi Adesina, could not respond to text messages sent to him on the matter.

Similarly, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mba, responding to our SMS, said: “I have no immediate information on this. However, I’ll check with the appropriate departmental head and revert to you as quickly as possible.”

But as at press time, no response was received from him.

Meanwhile, Lt. General Abdulrahman Dambazzau, Minister of Interior, has opened up on why the Nigeria police have been on the back foot in addressing the nation’s internal security challenges in the last three years of the present administration, blaming it on the leadership style of immediate past Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

Gen. Dambazzau gave the hint when Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.

The minister said the police under Idris lost their bearing as leading internal security agency, and failed to benefit from any policy direction of the Federal Government.

He said the former IGP severed the relationship between the force and its parent ministry, the Ministry of Interior, and with dire consequences for the entire security outfit.

The police, he said, suffered neglect as issues concerning them never came before the Federal Executive Council in those three years.

Highlighting how serious the problem was, General Dambazzau disclosed that since taking charge as minister, he had presented about 25 memoranda before the Federal Executive Council, and that not one of the memos addressed the challenges faced by the police.

He said: “I came in here as minister in November 2015 and Mr. Arase, who was the IG at the time, we had a cordial relationship but I think when Arase left, there was a severance of relationship, but not completely because most of our dealings in terms of internal security were with DIG Operations.

“This is because we thought we must vigorously continue to carry out our mandate, regardless of those challenges, for the benefit of the police as an institution”.

He added: “Throughout those three years, we have presented over 25 memos to the Federal Executive Council that has to do with policies, projects, and so on, but none of those memos was on the police.

This is the kind of thing we must try to avoid. You need a virile ministry to represent you at the Federal Executive Council.”

The minister maintained that with the kind of internal security challenges confronting the country, the police must work with relevant institutions to enhance its competencies, not only in terms of policies.

The minister said the ministry appreciated the idea of community policing, adding that the police had a lot to benefit from the ministry, especially under a democratic environment.

While assuring the IGP of the full support of the ministry, the minister said the mounting internal security challenges in the country required the cooperation of all.

Earlier, the acting IGP, who was accompanied by a newly constituted management made up of 7 DIGs and an AIG, had assured the minister of his loyalty while regretting the frosty relationship between the ministry and the force under Idris.

He said the force under his charge would work closely with the ministry to address the internal security challenges.

Fielding questions from reporters, Adamu again reassured Nigerians that the police would be professional in discharging its role during the forthcoming elections.
