Offa, the second biggest city in Kwara state was once the target of  bandits in the past. Thereafter, it organised a local vigilante force to thwart future attacks. But when the bandits came calling last week, the vigilante and the Nigerian policemen were completely outgunned, leading to the killing of eight policemen and nine civilians, according to this report by icirnigeria.org
Last week’s  robbery attack on five banks in Offa, Kwara State, was a success for the criminals because police and vigilante could not match their calibre of weapons.
Five banks — Union Bank, Ecobank, Guaranty Trust Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank and Ibolo Micro Finance Bank — were robbed in an attack that lasted one-and-a-half hours in Offa town.
Wasiu Adepoju, Operations Commander, Vigilance Group of Nigeria, Offa, Kwara State chapter, said his men counted about 50 dead bodies after the attack,
“After the robbery, we counted about 50 dead policemen and civilians. They shattered the bodies with bullets. They targeted mainly the heads of their victims,” Adepoju told journalists on Saturday.
However, Lawan Ado, Kwara State Police Commissioner, insisted 17 people, comprising nine police officers and eight civilians, died in the attacks.
Adepoju said the robbers took the local security personnel by surprise, noting that there was little they could do upon learning of the attack because of the robbers’ “sophisticated weapons”.

He stated that the bandits stormed the area and started shooting indiscriminately with heavy guns, adding that they ran to inform the police as they did not have any ammunition to defend themselves or to confront the robbers.
Adepoju stated that before they could reach the police station, the bandits had already killed some victims, including policemen.
He also appealed to the federal and state governments to provide them with weapons and to motivate them. The vigilance group Commandant said it would have been impossible for the robbers to operate and go unchallenged if the vigilantes were armed.
He further appealed to wealthy indigenes of Offa to help them, saying they were only rendering voluntary work to the community.
Adepoju said: “This is new to us. Bandits came to Offa some years ago. After that, all security operatives, including vigilantes, started to monitor the town from morning till night. They came twice at a time but it was not possible for them to operate.
James Oyeyemi, a retired police inspector who lost his daughter, Grace Makinde, also an inspector, to the robbery, said the bandits were able to operate unhindered because of their sophisticated weapons.
“The police said they do not have the kind of weapons the robbers came with. The police have AK-47, while the robbers came with machine guns as I gathered. How could someone with AK-47 face somebody with machine gun? The police do not have sufficient weapons,” Oyeyemi said.
“In the past, the IG used to equip the police with armoured car and bulletproof vests. So where are they now? They do not maintain the vehicles for operations, they do not buy arms and they do not pay them well? How do they want the police to perform? They cannot perform.’’

Some women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have given reasons why many of them  nag in relationships than their male counterparts.
Many males assume that women have inclination for nagging if they want something done for them, an attitude that annoys or irritates the targeted person.
However, some women, who spoke with our correspondent in separate interviews on Sunday, said that women were only sensitive, responsive and vocal by nature.
They gave reasons such as ineffective communication, lack of understanding, and insensitive attitude of their partners, among other factors, as some of the causes of their overt and confrontational attitude.
Mrs Gloria Agbo, a media practitioner said: ”The society has stereotyped women and labelled them as the ones who nag more, when there are men that have treated their partners so rash that it makes them timid, vulnerable or even aggressive.’’
According to her, a woman nags when she is being ignored or deprived of her rights.
“When she expects you to do what is your duty in a relationship,  and you don’t do it, despite repeated requests, it will definitely makes her nag.
“However, I also use nagging to seek attention whenever I feel neglected or ignored, because every woman needs attention from her man,”she added.
Miss Halima Sarki, a civil servant said some women nag when they don’t get what they want despite several requests, which always elicits emotions like anger, frustration and the tendency to whine.
“I nag when I repeatedly bring up the same issue severally in order to get an action done but do not get the response I want, which gets me angry and frustrated.
“Some women prefer things done their way, without considering the opinion of the other parties  involved, so nagging is a tactic for them until they get their way.’’
Esther Adeosun, a retired health worker said women nag more when there is lack of understanding and ineffective response to the action being communicated.
“When there is communication breach and lack of understanding definitely the expected action would not occur, which in most cases tend to make a woman nag, particularly when it has to do with assisting in house chores.
“I used to nag when my children don’t do the house chores they are assigned to, expecting me to remind them daily, which gets me angry,’’ she said.
Adeosun, therefore, stressed the need for good communication strategy, team work, mutual respect and understanding to avoid issues that would necessitate nagging.
Meanwhile, Mr Fidelis Yamai, a psychologist, said nagging could lead to a breakdown in relationship, cause a lot of fight or emotional and health problems.
“It is detrimental to the health of the persons involved.
“Both parties may  begin to disdain for each other, question the relationship and make them wary of seeing each other.
“Instead of being happy and looking forward to spending time together, they begin to avoid each other,” Yamai said.
Yamai, therefore, stressed the need for proper communication, love, attention, good relationship and being supportive and taking responsibility as some of the factors that could reduce nagging in relationships.

The blaze that erupted on the 50th floor of Trump Tower in New York late on Saturday is reported to have killed an elderly man and injured four fire fighters
The New York Police Department said 67-year-old Todd Brassner was found “unconscious and unresponsive” when officers arrived at the scene.
Brassner — a Trump Tower resident identified by US media as an art dealer — was pronounced dead after being taken to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital.
According to police, the medical examiner’s office would determine the cause of death as part of an ongoing investigation.
“This was a very difficult fire. As you can imagine, the apartment is quite large, we are 50 stories up. The rest of the building had a considerable amount of smoke,” the New York City Fire Department said.
It said the four firefighters had “non-life threatening” injuries and the blaze had been brought under control.

The building, which is owned by US President Donald Trump, serves as the headquarters for The Trump Organization and houses the president’s penthouse.
Surrounding streets were closed off as tourists snapped pictures on their phones.
The fire department earlier tweeted a picture of the building with several windows of the 50th floor ablaze.
Trump later said the fire had been extinguished.
“Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” he said.(AFP)
According to Palmer Report @PalmerReport said in its tweet“NY fire commissioner confirms that Trump Tower doesn’t have fire sprinklers on the floor where someone just died in a fire. Are you kidding? Donald Trump can’t even build a safe building, let alone run a country”.
– Someone dies in Trump Tower fire
– There were no sprinklers
– Trump brags “well built building”
– Still hasn’t acknowledged victim
– Can’t even build a safe building?
– Can’t be president
– Time to resign, you evil turd
– It’s still only 10:35pm
Kyle Griffin tweeted that the president has yet to tweet about the man who died tonight in Trump Tower. His only tweet so far praised firefighters and touted his “well built building.” LR News

Cyberattackers have hit  networks in a number of countries including data centers in Iran where they left the image of a U.S. flag on screens along with a warning: “Don’t mess with our elections”, the Iranian IT ministry said.
“The attack apparently affected 200,000 router switches across the world in a widespread attack, including 3,500 switches in our country,” the Communication and Information Technology Ministry said in a statement carried by Iran’s official news agency IRNA.
The statement said the attack, which hit internet service providers and cut off web access for subscribers, was made possible by a vulnerability in routers from Cisco which had earlier issued a warning and provided a patch that some firms had failed to install over the Iranian new year holiday.
A blog published on Thursday by Nick Biasini, a threat researcher at Cisco’s Talos Security Intelligence and Research Group, said: “Several incidents in multiple countries, including some specifically targeting critical infrastructure, have involved the misuse of the Smart Install protocol…
“As a result, we are taking an active stance, and are urging customers, again, of the elevated risk and available remediation paths.”
On Saturday evening, Cisco said those postings were a tool to help clients identify weaknesses and repel a cyber attack.
Iran’s IT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi posted a picture of a computer screen on Twitter with the image of the U.S. flag and the hackers’ message. He said it was not yet clear who had carried out the attack.
Azari-Jahromi said the attack mainly affected Europe, India and the United States, state television reported.
“Some 55,000 devices were affected in the United States and 14,000 in China, and Iran’s share of affected devices was 2 percent,” Azari-Jahromi was quoted as saying.
In a tweet, Azari-Jahromi said the state computer emergency response body MAHER had shown “weaknesses in providing information to (affected) companies” after the attack which was detected late on Friday in Iran.
Hadi Sajadi, deputy head of the state-run Information Technology Organisation of Iran, said the attack was neutralized within hours and no data was lost. LR News
