President Donald Trump

President Trump seems not to be relenting on his criticisms of America’s famous news channel CNN and this time around the U.S. president has carpeted the media outfit for a mistake in a recent report on Russia meddling, saying the cable TV network was “caught red handed” disseminating “fake news.”
Trump through his twitter handle said: “CNN’S slogan is CNN, THE MOST TRUSTED NAME IN NEWS.”
“Everyone knows this is not true, that this could, in fact, be a fraud on the American Public. There are many outlets that are far more trusted than Fake News CNN. Their slogan should be CNN, THE LEAST TRUSTED NAME IN NEWS!”
The president’s tweet came one day after CNN reported that the president’s son Donald Jr. and others on the Trump presidential campaign received an email on Sept. 4, 2016, telling them in advance about the release of some yet-to-be published WikiLeaks documents.
These included emails from the Democratic National Committee.
However, the date was erroneous. The email was in actuality dated Sept. 14, one day after the WikiLeaks document dump.
In a tweet Saturday, the president also criticized ABC News and reporter Brian Ross for a recent, incorrect story that Trump, as a candidate in the 2016 White House race, had illegally instructed campaign member Mike Flynn to make contact with Russia, in an apparent attempt to help defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
The stock market plunged, and Ross was suspended over the gaffe for four weeks.
Trump appeared to suggest that CNN had intentionally put out an incorrect story.
“Fake News CNN made a vicious and purposeful mistake yesterday,” Trump tweeted. “They were caught red handed, just like lonely Brian Ross at ABC News (who should be immediately fired for his ‘mistake’). Watch to see if @CNN fires those responsible, or was it just gross incompetence?”

Ex-Gov. Babangida Aliyu

As campaign for the 2019 elections hots up, a former Governor of Niger, Babangida Aliyu, says the party will fight corruption, to reduce poverty in the country.
He made this known in a goodwill message at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention in Abuja on Saturday.
Aliyu who spoke on behalf of former PDP governors, said come 2019, the party would ensure that agriculture was given the kind of subsidy required.
“We will ensure that agriculture becomes commercialised and mechanised. Naira has depreciated; importing any food in Nigeria will be a waste because you will not make any profit.
“Our importers are not importing food and therefore we must understand that it was not a deliberate plan; it was a plan by devaluation.”
Aliyu commended the National Caretaker Committee Ahmed Makarfi for holding forth during the party’s trying moments.
“We will live more united, stronger and ready to take over in 2019, PDP governors have done beautifully well and there is no alternative to the PDP,” he said.

Iraq has “completely liberated” all of its territory that was under the control of Islamic State extremists, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Saturday.
“Your land has been completely liberated,” al-Abadi said in a televised statement to Iraqis.
“The liberation dream has come true. We have achieved victory due to the valour of our troops.”
The announcement came shortly after the Iraqi military said that a three-week offensive in the western province of Anbar was over after driving Islamic State from a large desert area near the Syrian border.
The onslaught was the last stage in a US-backed campaign of around three years to dislodge Islamic State from Iraq.
“We declare to the Iraqi people and the world our arrival at the last stronghold of Daesh in the west of Anbar,” al-Abadi said, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State.
“The Iraqi flag is now fluttering atop the last Daesh bastion.”
Commanders of the Iraqi army’s different branches appeared in the background as al-Abadi made his victory address.
He vowed to fight corruption, in a sign of reaching out to the opposition that has repeatedly claimed rampant graft and mismanagement in the oil-rich country.
“Fighting corruption is an extension of liberation battles. There will be no place for the corrupt in Iraq,” al-Abadi said.
Islamic State is believed to still have sleeper cells in some parts of Iraq.
Five suspected Islamic State bombers on Saturday blew themselves up in the northern oil-rich province of Kirkuk, according to Ali al-Huseini, a spokesman for the government-sanctioned Shiite militia, the Popular Mobilization.
The five had blown themselves up after they were besieged during a massive security operation aimed at purging the area of Islamic State pockets, al-Husseini told Iraqi news portal Alsumaria News.
“The joint forces continue to hunt the organization’s pockets and purge the areas that the terrorist organization still manipulates to carry out attacks,” he added.
The Popular Mobilization has played a key role in Iraq’s drive to regain the territory that Islamic State seized in a mid-2014 blitz.
In recent months, Islamic State has suffered major military setbacks and lost ground in Syria and Iraq where it launched a self-proclaimed caliphate.

Efforts are being intensified to give Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) a degree-awarding status, the Rector, Mr Olayinka Sogunro, said on Saturday.
The rector gave the assurance at a meeting of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN).
The event was hosted by the institution’s School of Communication and Liberal Studies, in conjunction with Diamond Award for Media Excellence.
Sogunro said that, by the upgrade, the institution would run National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes alongside degree programmes.
“We are working on the upgrade of this polytechnic to a university status, but our polytechnic will be different from the conventional university because we are not going to abandon our National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes.
“We are going to run them concurrently so that students would have acquired the necessary skills and theoretical path upon graduation,’’ he said.
According to him, Lagos State Government has promised to improve the institution’s learning environment in line with the proposed upgrade.
“Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode said that he would provide a befitting 5,000-capacity auditorium estimated at N3.2 billion, an administration block that was to cost N1.9 billion in 2003, and students’ hostels,’’ he said.
The rector added that the governor promised to complete building the school’s sports ground.
“By January 2018, these projects will commence,’’ he said.
Sogunro called on students and staff of the institution to improve the quality of their research output, noting that the survival of any economy would depend on the quality of its human capital.
Mr Steven Omojafor, Chairman, STB McCann Advertising Company, and the guest speaker at the occasion, observed a decline in the number of advertising, communication and marketing agencies in the country.
“We have not been able to sustain our growth because many agencies are being short-changed by their clients who now run agencies, and many were not properly setup.
“We should be increasing and not decreasing,’’ he said.
Omajafor urged the students to be hard working and take advantage of the opportunities in the changing world of advertising, communication and marketing industry.
“Being the digital generation, you can turn things around because the current state of affairs in the industry cannot continue forever,’’ he said.
The Chairman, ACSPN, Prof. Lai Oso, blamed massive unemployment in the country on unpreparedness of graduates for the labour market.
Oso was represented by Mr Ayo Oluwatosin, Group Managing Director, Rosabel Group.
“The association was borne out of the fact that the typical Nigerian graduate is not industry-ready by the time he or she completes education; this is accountable for the massive unemployment,’’ he said.

Chief Gbenga Daniel

Chief Gbenga Daniel, a former Governor of Ogun and an aspirant to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairmanship position has stepped down from the race.
Daniel at the convention ground on Saturday in Abuja, said he was withdrawing from the race to ensure peace and unity in the party.
Latest Reality News reports that Jimi Agbaji and Dr Aderemi Olusegun had also withdrew from the race.
It is expected that some others may also withdraw from the race.
Agbaje said he withdrew from the race to reduce the number of aspirants from the South-West in order to brighten their chances in the race.
The withdrawal of the three aspirants including Chief Olabode George, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees brought the number of those who had withdrawn from the race to six.
George earlier withdrew from the race on Friday night, saying that the South-West was already cheated with the entrants of aspirants from the South-South.
George, who said he stood for the party`s micro-zoning principal which had been jettisoned, also said that the Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike abused the Yoruba people on national television.
According to him, Wike accused the Yoruba people that they have never contributed anything meaningful to the success of the PDP.
A statement George described as an insult.
He maintained that Wike must tender an unreserved apology to the Yoruba people for his utterances against the race.
He also alleged that the PDP chairmanship position had been sold to the highest bidder.
“It appears the PDP is bent on self-destruction. I can’t be part of this, the chairmanship position has been sold to the highest bidder,“ George stated while announcing his withdrawal from the race.
“It appears that PDP is bent on self-destruction. It has lost its soul. I cannot be part of this criminal allegation, the PDP is now mangled.
“I hereby withdraw from the fraud. As a Yoruba patriot, I will stand for our people,’’ George said.
He added that he entered the race due to the micro zoning arrangement which he said had been trashed.
He, however, explained that he did not step down for anybody but for the process and on principle, adding that his measure of experience was too heavy.
Chief Raymond Dopeksi, a frontline aspirant in the race, however, said he would go through the process till the end and stand by its outcome.
Dokpesi advised the party`s leadership to evolve ways of financing it, rather than depending on some of its bigwigs.
This, he said was critical to avoid imposition of candidates by those who were seen to be financing the party and money politics.
Gov. Dickson Seriake of Bayelsa, however, said that George deserved to be treated with respect and dignity as a stalwart of the PDP and a man that had put in so much in the country`s development.
Seriake added that leaders of the party would do everything possible to ensure that aggrieved nerves were calmed.
In his remarks, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom, Sen. Godswill Akpabio said that the party stalwarts were prepared to support and work with whoever emerged as its chairman.
He assured that better days were ahead of the PDP and Nigerians generally.

(Reuters/LR News) Israel launched fresh airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Saturday in response to rocket fire from the enclave and the Palestinian Islamist Hamas group said two of its gunmen were killed in the bombings.
Militants fired at least three rockets toward Israeli towns from the Hamas-controlled strip on Friday, which was declared a “day of rage” by Palestinian factions protesting U.S. President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
“Israeli Air Force aircraft targeted four facilities belonging to the Hamas terror organisation in the Gaza Strip.
“They are two weapons manufacturing sites, a weapons warehouse, a military compound,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
A Hamas source confirmed the two men killed in the strikes belonged to the group which urged Palestinians to keep up confrontation with Israeli forces.
Two more Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli troops on the Gaza border on Friday and scores more were wounded there and in the occupied West Bank during the protests.
Across the Arab and Muslim worlds, thousands more protesters took to the streets on the Muslim holy day to express solidarity with the Palestinians and outrage at Trump’s reversal of decades of U.S. policy.
Trump’s announcement on Wednesday has infuriated the Arab world and upset Western allies. The status of Jerusalem has been one of the biggest obstacles to a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians for generations.
Israel considers all of Jerusalem to be its capital.
Palestinians want the eastern part of the city as the capital of a future independent state of their own.
Most countries consider East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed after capturing it in the 1967 Middle East War, to be occupied territory.
It includes the Old City, home to sites considered holy to Muslims, Jews and Christians alike.
For decades, Washington, like most of the rest of the international community, held back from recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, saying its status should be determined as part of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.
The Trump administration argues that the peace process has become moribund, and outdated, as such policies need to be jettisoned for the sides in the conflict to make progress.
Trump also said he would fulfil his campaign promise and begin the process of moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, where no other country has an embassy.

(Xinhua/LR News) A special court has sentenced an Indian businessman and his domestic help to death for the brutal rape and murder of a 25-year-old housemaid in their home in Noida city on the outskirts of the national capital in 2006.
The court of India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) pronounced the quantum of punishment, a day after holding businessman Maninder Pandher and his aide Surinder Koli guilty in the crime they had committed in their house in Nithari village in Noida.
This was the ninth of a total of 16 cases in the macabre serial killings that took place in Nithari in 2005 and 2006.
While Koli has been found guilty in the earlier eight cases and awarded death penalty, Pandher was convicted in three cases and sentenced to death in two.
Handing down the punishment in the latest case, special CBI judge P.K. Tiwari said both Koli and Pandher were involved in the rape and murder of housemaid Anjali in 2006, and they deserved to be punished in the strictest manner.
“Koli had dragged the victim inside the house and made her unconscious, raped her, and then ate her flesh, therefore death sentence is the only option in law.
“Pandher was also involved in the crime. Both will be hanged till death,” the court held.
Anjali, who used to work as a housemaid in Noida, was reported missing in October 2006.
Her killing came to light after Koli’s arrest in December that year when police discovered skulls and bones of 16 persons, mostly children, near Pandher’s house.
The CBI took over the case from the local police subsequently and charge-sheets have been filed in 10 out of 16 cases.
The other cases are under trial.

No fewer than 14 peacekeepers serving in eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been killed, causing outrage in the world.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the killing of the soldiers.
He described the killing as the “worst attack” on UN peacekeepers in recent history.
The UN in a statement said late Thursday, the Company Operating Base of the UN Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) at Semuliki in Beni territory, North Kivu, was attacked by suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) elements.
The attack resulted in a protracted fighting between the suspected armed group elements and MONUSCO and Armed Forces of the DRC, known by the French acronym, FARDC.
“These deliberate attacks against UN peacekeepers are unacceptable and constitute a war crime” the Secretary-General said, adding: “I condemn this attack unequivocally.”
He called on the DRC authorities to investigate the incident and swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
The UN chief stressed: “There must be no impunity for such assaults, here or anywhere else.”
He also said that the attack was another indication of the challenges faced by UN peacekeeping operations around the world and acknowledged the sacrifices made by troop contributing countries in the service of global peace.
“These brave women and men are putting their lives on the line every day across the world to serve peace and to protect civilians,” he noted.
Guterres offered condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and a speedy recovery to those injured.
He also informed that military reinforcements, including the Force Commander from MONUSCO, had arrived on the scene and medical evacuation of casualties was ongoing.
The volatile North Kivu region, located in eastern DRC, has witnessed a number of attacks on UN peacekeeping forces.
In October, two UN ‘blue helmets’ were killed and another 18 were injured their base was attacked by the ADF armed group. (NAN)

Senator Ayo Arise

A former Senator from Ekiti State, Mr Ayo Arise, who was kidnapped last Sunday has regained freedom.
Arise, a governorship aspirant under the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ekiti state, regained freedom on Friday night.
The President of Oye Ekiti Progressives Union (OPU), an umbrella association of the indigenes of Oye, Mr Akin Omole, confirmed the release of the former senator to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Omole expressed gratitude to God and well-meaning individuals, who rallied around the community during the “dark hours”.
““It is true he (Arise) has been released. I heard from him and he told us that he has regained his freedom.
“”We are immensely grateful to God Almighty and to everyone, who assisted in one way or the other, for his release
“”Oye Ekiti community is highly grateful and we are saying thank you to everybody.
“”OPU on behalf of the Oye Ekiti community is grateful to everyone, who contributed in several ways towards ensuring that our illustrious son is freed without being harmed,’’ Omole said.
All attempts by our Correspondent to reach out to Arise on the telephone was, however, not successful.
Details of how he was released were also still sketchy as at Friday night, even as reports had it that his hometown, Oye Ekiti was already engulfed in wide jubilation over his release.
It could not be ascertained whether he was released in Kogi state, where he was reportedly kidnapped, and if any ransom was paid.
Since Arise was kidnapped, the Oye-Ekiti community had mobilised clerics from the major religions to pray at the palace of the Oloye of Oye, Oba Michael Ademolaju, for his safe return.
Arise, who represented Ekiti North Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011, was kidnapped on Sunday along with his driver when he was returning to Abuja after attending a function at home.

Small Doctor

For some weeks now, tongues have been waging that popular singer; Small Doctor was once a prison inmate. In a recent interview with the rave of the moment artiste, he described such talks as laughable. He used the opportunity to state why he went to prison.

The ‘Penalty’ singer said, “It is true that I was a bus conductor and a commercial motorcyclist. I also hawked sachet water but I thank God for the gift of life now because I am one of the most sought-after artistes at the moment. I just feel that there is no limitation to what anybody can achieve in life. Those locked up in prisons are human beings too and that is not the end of their lives, so I decided to reach out to them. Also, my colleague, Lamboginny, reached out to me and said he wished we should go to the prison and perform for them, so I gladly agreed. I have never been a prisoner and I laughed when I learnt that people thought I was once an inmate because of this gesture. I just feel we should always put a smile on the faces of other people regardless of any situation they are facing in life.”

The singer told Saturday Beats that ever since he attained fame, his mother’s advice to him was to ensure that he only comes home late at night. “My mother is a teacher but she is very publicity-shy. She has never been a socialite and even those that live around her only know her as a landlady and not Small Doctor’s mother, simply because she is publicity-shy. She always tells me to make sure I don’t come to the house in the afternoon but at midnight. She is just a private person. However, I would have loved a little spotlight to shine on her because she has done so much and she is the best mom in the world,” he said.

It seems to be the best man at Oristefemi’s wedding has got the singer thinking about marriage as he told Saturday Beats that he could tie the knot soon. “I don’t think I have enough money to get married but it would come at the perfect time. Definitely, I would love to get married soon and when it happens, it would be all over town that Small Doctor is getting married. When it is time, the world would know. Anytime from now, the miracle would happen and I would get married,” he said.

 Chief Bode George

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Bode George, on Friday announced his withdrawal from the race for the national chairmanship of the party.

He also lambasted Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State for saying the people of the South-West did not deserve to produce the chairman of the party.

George, who said he did not withdraw for any candidate, told one of our correspondents during an interview on Friday evening that he would not be participating in the congress on Saturday (today) as it was obvious that the event would be a charade. While speaking at the headquarters of his campaign office in Maitama District of Abuja, George, flanked by his supporters, said it was wrong for the party not to “micro-zone” the office of the national chairman, as against the zoning principle reinforced in Port Harcourt last year.

He said, “The party has lost its soul. It has lost its principled beginning and the predications of righteousness. It has traded the finer principles of democratic guidance and equity for the squalid, dirty and shameful resort to mercenary agenda, where nothing matters save the putrid, oafish gains of the moment.

“I cannot be part of this screaming aberration. And as the Atona of Yorubaland, I do not expect any well-meaning, well disciplined, forthright, sincere Omoluabi of Yorubaland to continue with this deceit and shameful theatre.

“The Peoples Democratic Party has now mangled and distorted its soul and spirit. There is no morality here anymore. There is no sanity or any sense of enlightened civility.

“As a result of these observed aberrations wherein the position of the National Chairman has been apparently sold and auctioned to the highest bidder, I as an Omoluabi and as an authentic Atona of Yorubaland, I will not partake in this charade.

“I hereby withdraw from this brazen fraud and absolutely preconceived, monetised, mercantilist convention.”

While describing Wike’s comments as unfortunate, George argued that without any meaningful position, the South-West, which played a huge role in the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, would not be eager to support the PDP in 2019.

He said, “I have removed myself from the charade but I did not step down for any individual. Governor Wike insulted the South-West badly today. What does he take the Yoruba people for?

“He said there is no micro-zoning and then went ahead to say we have nothing to bring to the table. How do you want the Yoruba people to feel?

“He implied that the South-West is not an important zone and that we should play second fiddle.

It is not fair at all. I will not be going to the congress.

“We have been spending so much money campaigning all over the country. What do we tell our people when we return home? That the South-West didn’t get it because we are not considered important?”

He therefore called on Wike to apologise to the Yoruba over his comments.

Wike had said the South-West geopolitical zone did not deserve to produce the next chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party because the zone had no leader who could restore calm to the party.

Wike, who said the current crisis in the PDP emanated from the South-West, argued that the South-South zone, which is largely ruled by the PDP, deserves to produce the chairman in today’s national congress.

The governor said this during a Channels Television programme, ‘Sunrise Daily’, on Friday.

The governor said, “The problem that the PDP has today arose from the South-West. Look at the crisis! Mention one chairman that you will vote today in the South-West that will stabilise the party. Take for example, Tunde Adeniran. If you vote him in, then that will be the beginning of the crisis of the PDP in Ekiti State.”

Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted a rocket fired on Friday (Dec 8) at the Jewish state from the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said in a statement.
“No injuries were reported,” it added.
It was the second such incident since US President Donald Trump’s statement on Wednesday recognising Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.
His declaration sent shock waves through the region and Gaza’s Islamist Hamas rulers called for a new intifada, or Palestinian uprising.
On Thursday, Israel responded with air strikes and tank fire into Gaza after what a military statement described as “a projectile” was fired into southern Israel.
Palestinian security officials in the enclave said the sites hit were two Hamas posts.
The Israeli military said the targets were “two terror posts”, without identifying them, but said it held Hamas responsible for all attacks originating from the territory under its control.
